When you get paralyzed, your speed gets cut. That's why the other gastly's are faster than yours. Also, I gotta agree with gamewarrior2216. Your Butterfree knows confusion. Use it. Also, you lose whenever Alige or Steak dies because you never use any others. At least do what you did with Steak and put Pizza or something in the front of your party so it gains xp. It will help in the long run.

it seems you guys have forgotten that whenever a pokemon is paralyzed, its speed is halved for the duration of its paralysis, so thats how that lower level gastly was faster than your higher leveled gastly.

i'll tell you what the other status problems secondary effects are as well: paralysis=halved speed, and unable to attack sometimes

burned=damage taken every turn, attack is lowered

poisoned=damage taken every turn, no other effects

frozen/asleep=unable to attack until thawed/woken up

@L100Meganium Nah, that'd be 'dou' as in the words 'doushite' or 'dou ni ka' etc. It's the 'u' that gives it the 'oh' sound. Alternatively you can use a long 'o', but it's the difference between doctor (dokutaa) and donuts (doonatsu) that's the crucial thing.

The doctor thing is double relevant as the 'do' is short for 'doku' meaning poison.

The reason Steak won't evolve is because he doesn't like you. Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal has a system where pokémon evovles depending on how much they like you. The more they like you, the earlier they evolve. The more you make a Pokémon faint, the more they'll hate you.

You guys should have used alige first for the rival battle, stare (bite) which is a dark type move, is super effective on ghost and psychic types and you would have probably one shotted the fant and could have used steak on something else. Also when you are paralyzed your speed is reduced and the opponent attacks first, unless they are paralyzed as well.
