  • Learn to ride without your horse behind the vertical!

  • waru amcht man von soner schei sss tierquälkerin noch solche positiven videos. versteh cih ncih !!

  • Whilst Ankie's accomplishments as an international dressage rider can not be questioned, I do feel that her motivation, her training methods and her true love of horses can. I also think that new scientifically proven veterinary information is comig to light that might have caused her to make different decisions. But back when she started out, this kind of information was not well known. Just because she is winning doesn't mean it comes at no cost to the real star - the amazing HORSE!

  • I really hate Anky! She's so mean to her poor horses!

  • @zoesoffi Yes. She doesnt "produce" horses, she only destroy them! But thats the modern dressage...:/

  • She probably doesnt even give a rat's fuckin ass about her horses!

  • @IRide4TheBlue i think you need some mental help.... you have some pretty big issues . I suggest you get some help for it...

  • @Jaccko14 jetzt mal ganz ehrlich, findest du sie geht gut mit ihren pferden um? kein angriff, nur ne meinungsfrage ;)

  • It is frightening how many of these pictures I have used to show how it SHOULDN'T be done.

For starters, please notice how little 'spread' there is between the hindlegs in the majority of these snapshots: a very good reason for it, too, seeing that a locked back produces spectacular front legs but incapacitates the behind, making it impossible for the horse to step under and take the weight.

The story of the nameless horses who didn't succeed in Grunsven's system is much more interesting.

  • @mondydsp Great to see someone notice this. These days, during the times when people are beginning to forget about classical dressage to go to modern dressage, no one seems to care that their lengthenings are completely incorrect. When your horse is uneven, then they are not distributing their weight correctly. Which is what dressage IS. Finding perfect balance and harmony. Rollkur is NOT the way to get there.

  • Its so sad... the 2 riders I know that have trained under Anky have such a contrary, postive view of her. I wonder how so much trash talk and hate has become so popular.

  • you should change the title to

Anky van grunsven and the horses she's fucked up

  • @lassiesuca we meet again how sad it is you cant keep your obviously rather large nose out of ankys life if you and your cobs are so fuckin great go out and win these big grand prix classes its you and your wee belivers minds that are fucked up to the high heavens!!!

  • great comment go you!!!

  • if she has 'fucked up' these horses then why has she got so far and is respected by all goood horse riders around the world including me.

and if you are so good then why aren't you up there riding some of the best horses in the world?!!!!

  • @dressagelover234 She has gotten far by 'cheating' her way to the top (quickening the process through rollkur), not caring about her horse's comfortableness on the way up. And no, she is not respected by most horse people.

  • i glad to see none of picturses in this vid have anky hyperflexing her horses. this proves that thats not all she does. great vid!!!

  • And on tv sportsmen also do not shout about tars of pain, fatigue and difficulty that their training brought them into.

    They do not shout about their broken health;

that by 30 years all of them have specific diseases and are obliged to leave sport because their health can not afford them any more of this tiring and exhausting work....

Training is the face of the sport. But not those 15 minutes that are done for that show on events.....

  • @Korprolalie:

  • Sorry, I totally voted this thumbs down when I meant to mark it thumbs up. =/ I totally agree with you. Sorry about that.

  • entspannt geht keins der pferde.... kein wunder wenn die reiterin rollkur reitet und mit der kandare die nase einfach zur brust riegelt wenn das pferd sich wehrt!!!!!!!!!

  • for this women who produce with all her horses hyperflexion i don't have any positive attention tz -.-

  • jaccko: why at times I see comments sort of hidden under a vid but there´s no text telling the author of the video removed the comment. So for exampl. here why cant I see one of onelasssstime´s comment? the one with 6 minuses on it?

  • um probably because other people clicked on the thumbs down 6 times. when it reaches that the comment is hidden lol

  • ok, thx for telling! :)

  • It looks like the Euro gold is Anky's for the taking this year. Not too sure where the competition is going to come from. I may have interpreted a few newspaper reports wrong, to come up with this and I appologise if that's the case. Just stating my opinion.

  • everybody repeat...competition. ahhhhh...well that can explain everything for you ;-]

  • Mis-interpretted the reports that I read. Not unusual. I don't think black and white, that something is wrong or right. What works for one person may not for another, so I don't think people should be too judgemental about things.

  • Anky geh Sterben Ich HASSE dich!

  • of course they don't...where there is a misunderstanding for example when intrucing a new aid or movement, as of course, there will be, the horse will argue and "misbehave" as such, simply because he doesn't understand.

I don't know all that much about the spanish riding school. Maybe too much about commercial dressage.

I think dressage, to a certain extent, is natural because a horse will (on occassion and some more than others) do these things at liberty.

  • hmmmm yes, unnatural maybe, cruel in the wrong hands...but smae can be said for anything to do with humans and animals...

thats all good, apologies for getting my back up lol, I just make sure I do my research on the subject...I've ridden enough and seen enough to make my own desicion on it I think.

But likewise, it annoys me that people say "shut up your just jealous" to anyone who doesn't like her.

But everyone has differing opinions...I guess thats what makes it interesting! :P

  • But horse riding in its very nature is "unnatural".

And doing the upper school movements is difficult enough for a horse without making it more so by making it put it's head somewhere it would never do for more than a few seconds on its own. Hyperflexion as a stretching exercise may be beneficial, but I don't see the benefits in sustaining the position for prolonged periods. Ther are just other, more gentle ways to stretch a horse.

  • Yes- I was just about to say that- if you take it down to the base level some want to, the 'mere act of domesticating and God forbid, sitting on a horse is cruel and unnatural'.

  • I'm so tired of hearing what a bad rider she is- everyone really likes to jump on that bandwagon. So how did she get where she is? Every judge who ever handed her a medal must be ignorant and abusive themselves and know nothing about their own sport, eh?? You'd think she'd have never gotten anywhere in the sport with "everything she does wrong".. What are these crazy judges thinking? Lol.

  • She gets to where she is because of her horses. Her horses do he work, her horses do the moves and they're the ones that are get 'rewarded' with having their heads pinned to their necks because she believes Rollkur is a correct way of riding. You can go ahead and continue thinking she's an amazing rider, but while you soaking in your ignorance the rest of us will continue laughing at it. She's NOT a good rider.

  • "Me, riding ignorantly since1977"..

So, who trains her horses for her then?

Has anyone here ever used a pair of draw reins, or side reins while lungeing? How 'bout those Western 'pleasure' riders who tie the horses head high in the stall all night befoer a show so they drag their noses on the ground.. anyone ever heard of Francois Baucher? Hmmm.. another 'lousy' horseman- LOL..

  • I find it funny that instead of responding to the argument at hand you have to resort to insulting other disciplines.

  • Im not.. What is the arguement? you think she sucks, I wish I was as talented. As for my rhetorical question, I've Dressage AND H/J's for over 25 years and use the equipment I mentioned. In the right hands it works.

You didn't answer, though, what do you think of Mr. Baucher?

  • connection with your horse and the patience to teach it, you could do all this with a rope around its neck and no saddle at all. Allowing for all this equipment allows for inferior riding methods to produce "nice" looking "dressage".

  • Yes, I do most all in a snaffle, and I practice Parelli... you've missed my point 100%

  • he's shit.

Manipulation of a horses neck is the easiest method of controlling it. A horses neck it's it own "balance" system. By taking this away from them, you essentially gain control of the horse. Hence Hyperflexion is known as a good method for "working" with fizzy, excitable horses. Baucher capatilized on this.

Draw reins are absolutely unnecessary. Sides reins are best used with great finesse. If you need draw reins, theres something wrong with your riding.

  • I don't use draw reins in Dressage

  • you don't need to use them full stop. Horse riding is best stripped to the bare essentials. I good fitting snaffle and saddle. You don't need spurs and a double bridle is not necessarily a crock, but just another piece of equipment veiwed as essential by many when really, it is not. You can do anything in a snaffle that you can in a double, you don't need a double to aid collection because collection is nothing to do with the hands. Indeed, if you are truely talented and have a true..

  • And advice about creulty handed out from a hunter..

  • go, go me for the hunting then. I hope you enjoy your famred pork that spent it's life living in a 3x3m pen eating withit's head stuck in a hold so it can only eat out of a trough. Do you want a lecture on pig hunting? because I'll be more than happy to give you one.

Then if you do that good for you, so why rant about anky and draw reins and Mr Baucher?

  • I'm a vegetarian. Thanks though. PS- your dogs are a bit thin too- I also raise terriers.. something I also know about

  • yea Brin was when we got him. The people that had him before us also bonnet hunted him and ended up injuring his leg foreleg because he fell off and was run over. He was very malnourished when he first turned up. But by the time he was passed on to a friend of shanes he was far fitter, far healthier and far happier. Rook was about 9 years old (very old for a pig dog) and had next to no teeth due to a previous owner having fed him cannon bones. He was a bit like a horse as it gets older..

  • he was losing condition. But he still loved the hunting and was very fit so we took him out. As opposed to leaving him behind by himself in the run all day wile the other dogs were away. And Toa is fine. The dogs are fed ekenuba, it doesn't get much better or more expensive than that.

And good for you, but I don't see pig farming stopping because you don't eat meant.

  • And I wasn't saying I'm out there in the arena employing Rollkur.. I'm just tired of 'defending' a top level rider against many people who've never even ridden nor at least read about Dressage. Im not saying this is MY training method, but 99% of these vids on the subjest are a series of snapshots and DONT represent the rider.

  • no, many of them don't. I much rather watch the videos, because you might say they are a far better representation of whats actually happening, as opposed to a snap shot in time.

I don't disagree with you for defending anky. Kudos to her for winning lots of medals etc. My disagreement is with the method and the many gadgets people use to employ it. I'm just a believer in simplicity, I guess.

So just in my opinion, if anky needs to do all these things, she's just not that great.

  • good for your terriers. just to be a pain I breed border collies and my mum did so for 20 years before that too so I know just as much as you, I'm sure

  • but thats just what I think. I suppose I come across too strong? I always do...apologies for that..

  • no, it's fine, I'm not a fan of 'gadgets' either. I'm just turned off by the hipocrisy in the horse world. It's the same as in any subject..

  • People who ride jumpers over Puissance walls, (and Im one of those too), will call TB racing cruel, others say Dressage is "unnatural". The top Western Pleasure horses go around with their noses dragging in the dirt, some say a double bridle is cruel but when they could use one (if they knew how) with a VERY light hand, they instead will hang full force on a horses mouth in a snaffle..I just get aggravated at the biased comments people make w/o thinking

  • i with you on that one....and I'm more than likely guilty of it myself! I just try to focus my attention on the dressage a little more because thats what I do and love.

there are so many things that go on in the sport i would want to see changed, so many questionable methods, all to get ahead in the ring. but it happens in every sport.

i'm not sure there is such a thing as a fair competition because if it involves humans, there's some way of manipulating the reult!

  • So now you're a dressage rider who is also a top jumper. I have a feeling you're just pulling all this shit out of your ass to make yourself look better. All lies.

  • You couldn't comment dumbass, you're blocked. Haha

  • Blocked from where?

  • western pleasure horses have been trained to naturally hold their head low, i would know, just like reiners, they dont force them :P

  • and I don't believe that cruelty was mentioned..you've jumped to conclusions completely. I simply thinkn there are far better ways to do this

  • Just ignore onelasssttime. She's obviously got her head shoved so far up her ass she can't even communicate properly. Instead of answering the debate at hand she resorts to insulting others to make herself look better. A true sign of and arrogant person.

  • not really. I know you're probably just trying to maybe back me up? Not sure...but everyone is entitled to their opinion. onelasssttime was defending anky, they have their reson for doing so. We don't have to agree but we don't have to try to tell them who/what they are and where they should go. They weren't arrogant or abusive, I can think of other examples of people who resort to that kind of posting if you would like to get into an argument :P

  • fool, western pleasure riders dont do that, my friend went to state and is possibly going to congress, she does western pleasure and has won over 20 buckels and awards, does she do that? no. yes that may have been done in the 70's when that was legal but do you know what year it is? 2009 :P

  • Theres plenty of people ot there who everything and anything for money, and as far as the judge thing goes they could care less what you do at home, they judge on what they see in the showpen, haha wow like some of the big jumping trainers stick nails and electric fence wire at the top of the poles so if they knock them down it hurts and the have to jump higher next time :P they do that in the show ring, they do that for the money :P just like this

  • God I can't stand this rider. She flops around worse than I do when she rides and I've only at 1st level and she's always got those horses head's pinned to their chests. She's a sorry excuse for a grand prix rider.

  • Thanks for posting this great rider. I only laugh at all the novice riders who hand out critiscism.

Yeah, I'm sure Anky is "real" abusive to her millions of dollars worth of horseflesh..LOL. She has 'everything to gain' by abusing her horses..

If only I could ride like that!

  • I may be new to dressage, but not to riding. I'm FAR from novice having been riding for 15 years. I know a bad rider when I see one and Anky is just that, horrible. You can continue being ignorant of that fact, but the fact is, she's an abusive rider and I have no respect for her.

  • totally agree with you there!

  • i agree 100%

  • is this the video you mentioned on my rollkur vid comments? it doesnt exactly protray rollkur coz its just pictures of competing but still i can see the flat piaffe and signs of the rollkur trained horse from the hand

  • No comments or critism towards me are necessary, i'm just asking you to consider, before you judge.

  • I ask you all who think Anky is a terrible rider, ask yourself: How many pictures do I have that look cruel to my horse, but it was just "that moment" that he/she did something silly, or you were frusterated? Secondly, look at other videos and pictures of other Grand Prix riders and pick out how often their horse is behind the verticle - Anky is often picked on, but other riders are just as similar.. because NO pics/vids prove she rides this every time she gets in the saddle, re-think.

  • Agreed :)

  • not agreed!

  • well all you gotta do is look at her videos to see it is a completely constant low deep round motion you wanna check my rollkur video out its very informative and i have very good scientific and classical knowledge behind me to back me up.

  • Between 0 - 3:26 I counted 5 pictures of a horse 'Behind the Verticle'. Most of these pictures were of Solinero, and keep in mind all horses have habits. Yes, many of these pictures the curb is tight, but not all. I'm sure you've all ridden horses with habits like, "sucking back" (nearly identical), or anything: it's no difference. Yes, in some photo's she has appeared to ride Rolkur, but have you seen her, or a documented source of which is quoted her, herself saying she does?

  • you must really hate horses when you admire Anky.. or are you blind??? may be you want to be..

  • wouldnt be better to say "horses she had damaged by using hyperflexion"?

  • AND SHE IS FROM HOLLAND (l)

  • I'm sory but this isn't hyperfexion, it isn't behind the verticle line..;)

  • well the shots were all taken from competitions. If she´d do rolkur there she wouldnt get near medals!

  • personally i think anky uses hyperflexion better than basically everyone else

i don't like hyperflexion but she seems to be very tuned in to what her horse is telling her and is using hyperflexion in a good way

but most people will use it as a shortcut because they are lazy

  • if you ever had seen Anky outsite a stadion and how she is "warming up" her horses you wouldn't say that. I saw her at the WEQ 2006 and people were shocked, angry and disgusted by the way she prepared for the competition. It was the most perverted thing I ever saw anyone do in public calling it "dressage"

  • your right i've never seen her warming up

but can someone be horrible in the warm up ring and just let the horses head back up and be that good??

i don't know i'm very confused about this situation o_0

  • I know, it's not an easy subject and a very emotional one. I don't think Anky really knows any better or she wouldn't do this. I hope. My guess is that her horse is just relieved to be allowed to walk with a higher head in the competitions. I recently saw Heuschmanns " if horses could speak" he explains the anatomy behind dressage and how it is impossible for the horse to carry a rider in a healthy way when it is hyperflexed. It was really convincing and well researched.

  • " if horses could speak" can it be found in parts here in youtube?? Id really like to see it! :)

  • There is only the trailer online and several interviews with Doctor Heuschmann. Just search for it and you will find it ;-)

  • and about the competitions: her horse wasn't relaxed in the stadion that day. It was not the kür day but the friday and I think it was salinero who ran in a panic out of the stadium with a screaming Anky on his back. Of course he is a very sensitive horse but so many others there are as well but trusted there riders enough to stay with them. It might be a coincidence but it makes me wonder... I don't have the answers but I think it is important we discuss the ways dressage has turned recently.

  • wow one would think that she could at least stop him or turn him around

do you know a website where i could read what Heuschmanns wrote i'd like to see it

  • There is a book by Gerd Heuschmann called "Tug of war" with a pretext by Hans-Heinrich Isenbart. You also can find the trailer to his "if horses could speak" on Youtube. I would send you the links but somehow it just don't work on YouTube.

But I found both very interesting and enlightening.

  • i'll have to go read it, thanks!!

  • I sadly assume THAT (running salinero, screaming anky) can´t be found in videoform here? When did such happen?? O_O I´ve never really followed pro dressage-world that much, basically cause here in finland it´s pretty difficult cause u´d have to own certain channels on tv to see the competitions :(

  • That was in Aachen in 2006 at the Friday of the dressage competitions of the World Equestrian Games. I saw it live and on TV later back home. I have a DVD recording of the competition, if I am lucky they have a clip of it as well. I will try to find it the next days. But no guarantees if it is on the DVD.

  • For big competitions like that you'll see riders yanking the horse's heads to their chests in the warm up so that when they're in the ring the horses are thrilled that they aren't being pinned so they happily work lightly on the bit the whole time. Its a dirty little trick they use so the horse stays on the vertical during their tests.

  • maybe it's just my horse but if i pull her head behind vertical she gets pissed off and won't take contact with my hands for like an hour. I just can't even understand how they could ride all curled up and then let their horses up for about five minutes and have the head that consistant. My trainer was re-training a rolkur horse and even if you were walking on a long rein she was still curled up. How Anky could bring her horses head up for only five minutes, beats me.

  • Maybe is that the reason that they (anky and sjef) are telling ervery one that it's only good when you do it well.

It's not for people like us. We don't have the abilties and knowledge to keep te hindlegs moving while we flexs the front!

Therefore we have to keep away form rollkur and the horse of your instructor is a horse with other problems then roll kur ;)

  • Dales wrote to Minister Verburg that hyperflexion is a serious case of mental abuse on the animal and follows the standpoint of the FEI veterinary committee on hyperflexion. He has asked her to forbid the rollkur as a method for training horses. Verburg has promised to investigate the issue properly. She has already contacted the Dutch Equestrian Federation to line up their findings and research on the issue. (Photo courtesy:

  • Dutch Minister Gerda Verburg has announced that she will conduct an investigation into the rollkur-hyperflexion, following an official written complaint from Frank Dales, president of the Dutch Animal Welfare Society.

    It's

  • "Admit it"? It is simply a method many riders use these days, and she and Sjeff are very open about how they train. Anyone can watch them train. They take many students and it is all very open.

She has taken horses no one else could do anything with, Salinero was returned by another buyer, he was absolutely impossible, he was so tense. Rollkur or hyperflexion is to supple the horse. It is not abusive (tests show lower stress hormones). I don't care for it but i will not criticize her.

  • good job

  • has it been proven? dear open your eyes and check the big world of internet..

  • ROLLKUR MEANY MEANY MEANY MEANY MEANY

  • nice, now that's a good rider, you know it looks like the extendeed trot is a very difficult step to do, most horses when they do it teir leg gets straight and it shouldn't, in most of the pictures here during extended trot there was a lovely curd in the leg.

  • sorry my english xD

  • Good vid =) I've met Anky during Oslo Horse Show in Norway xD She's a really nice person =)

  • jackko- i was laughing because resiliance93 said she looked like a prune lol. not cause of her riding

  • my fav is Salinero, but like anyone cares

  • My first and VERY favorite was Bonfire, NOW it's Salinero, I'M SO CONFUSED! haha

  • Resiliance93 - LMFAO!!!

  • yea like beezie madden shes a good rider but she looks like a prune LOL :)

  • i love beezie madden!!!

  • me too lol

  • wanna hear somthing weird, shes really pretty. lol. most grand prix dressage riders look old lol. by the why im not lez.

  • omg yes totallt agree with you! some of the GP riders look like men as well, old, ugly men ahhh whats with that and dressage riders?

Jaccko14 i think anky is pretty in her riding gear as well, she looks neat and tidy, and i hv grown very fond of her smile lol except that one u showed me of her and isabell kissing each other on the cheek ... hahah thats funny

  • funny how why you chose Queen it's one of Anky's favourites! and she was thinking of using Queen with her new Kur Music for Salinero. Anky is a Queen to Music and a Rock to the dressage world.

  • good vid jack, Anky is amazing. the horses she has riden are top performers. She is more than welcome to come train mine =]]

  • AHAHAHA i stole ur idea!!! but i also made one of my pics :) check it later! have a good day!!

  • I think she suits Redfort and Painted Black basically the black ones lol and also the grey one cant remember what thats called

  • I love it, great job jack :)
