Something really nostalgic about this to me. With John Tesh and his music. It's too bad we didn't get Ligett's live commentary, but looking back to those years, it was just great to see something like this on American TV at all. Thanks for putting it up on here.
The 1986 Tour de France is what got me into this sport. From Australia, we got the coverage done by CBS Sports America and the drama made out by the music and commentary of John Tesh and of course Phil Liggett got me hooked for life.
I have a John Tesh cassette too which I was lucky to find on ebay - "Music from the Tour de France" (NOT the 1988 Tour de France release, nor the early years) so if anyone is interested in the mp3s from it, let me know and I can email it.
I really appreciate people putting this kind of coverage from the U.S. "Big Three" networks in the 80's and 90's on Youtube. Youtube is a goldmine for this great stuff.
when you marry john tesh's music with Phil Ligget's commentation and a piece of cycling video.. you always get something very emotional to watch! man I love cycling coverages back in the 80's and early 90's!
it's embarrasing to say, but i totally agree. that old tesh/ligget coverage had a real power that you wouldn't think "edited together after the fact" coverage would. i was raised on this stuff and it still kind of haunts me.
I wish they can do cycling coverages like that again. Making it like an exciting story filled with highs and low emotions.
Present cycling coverages are boring. Just following the whole race from start to finish.. no music.. just non stop yapping.. I often fall asleep watching them.
I think that one of the major networks actually _does_ do weekend "recap" Tour de France coverage -- the main dramatic points of the past week condensed into a narrative with music and all that, much like CBS and NBC did in the late '80s. But for some reason it's not as much fun. There's no Phil Liggett; and '80s music worked better for sports anyway.

I believe by now Tesh has improved upon his skills to pronounce names from different countries.

God, I hate that music. Why did everything have to be set to hideous, electronic music 20 years ago? Ugh!

I like how the motorbikes just ride in the field like they have numbers on their back...
Thats the SuperWeek announcer I think, coverage was better back then...

I always did love Bugno's willingness to whack his supporters when they got too "supportive."
