To make the Ohio Express history even more complex, we were The Conquests when we recorded Beg Borrow and Steal, later released under the name The Rare Breed, and then released again under the name Ohio Express. We did it live on YouTube a couple of years ago. Anyway, enjoyed this, so thanks for posting !
Ahh the mysteries of Ohio Express.Well, gotta say my crush was always on Doug and no one can ever deny his style. That man rocks when he plays..,Will always love ya Doug!!!!!
The history of the Ohio Express is about as complex as a band's history can get. But suffice to say that Sausalito was one of the highlights of the summer of 1969. A classic!!
This was the line up which toured mainland Europe in 1969 and recorded this performance for a German television show. The programme also featured PP Arnold, Maxine Nightingale and Raymond Froggatt.
To fit the programme format some switching of instruments among the group took place. From left to right the group members are: Chris Brown on bass (normally the keyboard player), Wilgus Hicks on guitar and lead vocal (normally the bass player) and original member Doug Grassel on guitar.
I have this 'old hippie' friend (Peter) that is a 'street musician' and he is about 60 years old..he plays guitar with his little dog by the Sausalito ferry dock and so he never heard this song so I put it on CD and took it down to him...he thought it was a good song! It should be the theme song played all over that town..but few people have even heard of it!
This was not the usual 'borrowed' vocalist (Joey Levine).. this singer is Graham Gouldman later to join '10CC' in the early 70's. This 'promo video' probably never got any 'airplay' on television in 1969... I never even heard about it!?
Graham wrote some great hits-For Your Love; Heart Full of Soul; Evil Hearted You; Bus Stop; Look Through Any Window; No Milk Today; Listen, People, among them. Check him out on Wikipedia.
Most likely. According to Wikipedia, the (soon-to-be) four members of 10cc- Kevin Godley; Lol Creme; Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman comprised this edition of Ohio Express, with Graham singing lead and the other three playing instruments and singing back-up. 10cc was formed a short time later.
back in the 60's a lot of bands signed contracts to get their records out and then found themselves no longer in charge of their own band and then finally replaced. this is not the original band or any of its members. it is a nice tune. it just says something about corporate greed versus the urge to create, and why so many good US bands never had a chance.
What happened to the "Chewy,Chewy" video by the Ohio Express? Last time I saw it was two weeks ago now it's gone! Was it copyright problems? Just curious!
"This was a 'promo video' from about 1975..not sure where it got any 'airplay'??...I never saw it on tv in the 70's!? Maybe:'Don Kirchner's Rock Concert/'Wolfman's Jack's Midnight Special', I must have missed, I am 47??
"Sausalito", a #86 US hit credited to Ohio Express, and released in July 1969. In reality, the song featured Graham Gouldman on lead vocal, and vocal and instrumental backing by the other three future 10cc members.
are you sure? i'm almost certain the guitarist on the right was on their early stuff. i know graham gouldman wrote the song, but he also wrote for the yardbirds, hollies, and herman's hermits.
Yeah, some or all members of 10cc played on some of the later records for the Katz-Kasenetz bubblegum rock stable including Ohio Express and Crazy Elephant.
fantastic track, i never heard this one before. the first record i ever bought was chewy chewy in 1968, they made some great psychedelic tracks like first grade reader and turn to straw, a very cool group for sure!
If you dont know Willgus, then you don't know Ohio Express. This guy is hot.

Any idea if that's Graham on bass (on the recording, not the vid)? It sure sounds like him.

i just scored a copy of the 45, it has a real freaked out instrumental on the flip called "make love not war" which sound like late period animals.
sunra67 4 years ago
This isn't 10cc in the video, although yes they did do a lot of the Ohio Express stuff in the studio.

I also heard the Shadows Of Knight did a lot of Ohio Express and 1910 Fruitgum Co. music in the studio.....
