This is the perfect intro to the album. Slow enough to transition from Addicted! to Decon, but then hits you in the face like a speeding van full of rhinos like the album intended to do. :P
@mrdevecseri He does put quite a bit of thought into his lyrics. This particular song is an internal conflict about whether to give up drugs and alcohol or to continue to abuse yourself, which he faced in his life.
@TheInbornMechanics I think it very much depends where you are coming from. In terms of genre anyway. I've always been a big prog metal fan, so this album is just musical bliss for me. I did enjoy SYL, but i preferred Devin's older solo albums at the time. I don't know. To each and his own i guess.
@VitalSigns1 I think its telling a story like a kid whos never tried drugs and been sober boy his whole life till he becomes a weed boy addicted to self deconstruction
@VitalSigns1 For crying out loud. This is DEVIN TOWNSEND. He's never completely serious. If you don't like that then don't bother to listen to his music.
-Uh what? Devin Townsend's work is full of comedy if you pay attention to the lyrics.
And seriously, you people complaining about the content of the lyrics are not judging it in the right way.
The entire Devin Townsend Project is a concept of 4 albums. Devin's explained that the content and tone of the albums elude to some 'over arching' story. This album is, what I think he described, as the decronstruction of his former expression.
@VitalSigns1 What you fail to realize is that Devin has always had a sense of humor when it came to his music, especially with his heavy work. As for this track, it's setting you up for the concept of the album.
He had an orchestra recorded for this album and a shitload of special guests. If that's not serious, I don't know what is.
First listen to the album I was impressed, little did I know that this song and the Mighty Masturbator would become two of my alltime favourite Devy songs
My first listen blew me away. My second listening melted my face off. My third listening turned my calves to dust. From my fourth listening onward, it's just kept growing on me.
@TheInbornMechanics Same here. This album is good, but I have a feeling it's a grower and not as good as Addicted. Addicted is a pop-metal masterpiece.
@Feuyaer Well, Deconstruction isn't pop-metal for one. But it is what Devin said it would be: heavy and chaotic music, with a few songs that were a throwback to the SYL days.
Give me that ACIDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think devin puts a whole lot of thought into the lyrics theyre probly like the first thing off his head and sounds good to him
mrdevecseri 8 months ago
@mrdevecseri I think the lyrics are about Devy's earlier years and substance use and where it eventually lead him.

This sucks and is really goofy and retarded. Metal should be serious, not played light-heartedly.

I will NOT lighten up. This is HEAVY METAL. It's supposed to be harsh and brutal, not comical and tongue-in-cheeck.
