I think China learnt their lesson after the financial crisis in South Asia which was dealt with some brutality. This crisis was much smaller than the current one and countries were urged to meet their debt requirements. SAs often prefered to burn down their house rather than seeing it falling in the hands of their creditor. All this was conducted under the supervision of the IMF.

Very likely, Chinese realized that managing a debt with a power structure like the IMF would be dangerous since
