One minor correction. Schindleria praematurus is not a prehistoric fish. According to "The Fishes" (Life Nature Library, copyright somewhere around 1970), it is a tiny fish found in certan SW Pacific ecosystems--New Guinea, if I remember correctly.
They are all good in there own genres - sadly Entwhistle's performances are usually so low in the mix that his genius is hard to pick up - and the rest of the music is only so-so. Squire is usually part of a giant mix of weaving melody and rhythm and so also seems to blend in a bit with the rest of the sound. With only three in the band and Lee as the front man his work tends to be core and upfront. All good just different.
I remember when our buddy scored a fresh copy of "Yessongs" the first day it came out, and he came over. Me and my other friends practiclly through him in the door (we were big Yes fans), and listened to all 6 sides! Being a bass player, you know I was into "The Fish"!!
I need some yesfan's help. I love that beautiful piece with the lyrics..."do the leaves of green stay greener in the autumn, does the colour of the sun turn crimson white...etc" can any of you lads direct me to which lp. and what song that was? Thanks so much. fond memories . cheers!
Actually, I was reading where it could be any of the 3 things mentioned...the baths, the flooding, or that he's a Pisces (in another comment). Thanks! :)
Entwistle's my fav of all time I love Squire too though but ya have to admit Entwistle pretty much made playing like this possible...well in my book anyways. Both legends!
Yes, this is a small classic on 'Fragile' and also the 20 minute live version is awesome. Chris loved his baths...apparently that's how he got his nick name! I love the video that goes withy this, very nice and very appropriate.
Myungs good, but not as good as entwistle.

John and Chris are way better than Geddy dude.

There are many ways Chris could have gotten this nickname.
1.He spent long periods of time in the bathroom.
2.He flooded an apartment.
3.He is a Pisces.
4.He plays bass and a bass is a fish.

Hey, rhodesia...It's called "The Ancient: Giants Under the Sun" and it's on the CD Tales From Topographic Oceans. They did some GREAT stuff! :)

Squire got the name for flooding a hotel room, not for taking long baths.

Chris Squire- probably one of the best and most unappreciated bass players in rock

As good as he was, he couldn't hold a candle to Squire. You are entitled to your opinion, however. Most bass players would disagree, however.

The Ox is no slouch, but the Fish is probably the best bass player ever; a truly gifted musician.

thegoodusernameman 4 years ago
well it was james jamerson who really made bass playing like this possible
john entwistle cited him as an influence
check out the bassline to Darling Dear by the jackson 5 and you'll know what i mean
fishnsticks 3 years ago
Man I love Jamerson, but I meant he whole trebly, lead-bass thing yaknow
thegoodusernameman 3 years ago
oh yeah ...then your right
entwistle did start that
and the first rock bass solo =)
fishnsticks 3 years ago
actually james jamerson did that
take a listen to the stuff
it won't sound like rock
but it did pave way for the basslines that entwistle
does
in fact entwistle was greatly influenced by jamerson
but Entwistle did start the whole twangy noice of the bass
which i love!

I love all of the psychedelic images and of course the song itself! I love Yes and always meant to pick up their album 90125, but never did.

Very nice work! Oh, you forgot to mention that another reason for the nickname is that Fishy is a Pisces.
