This was my Bro's favourite track and we played it at his funeral. It was a freezing cold day in December and as the coffin entered the church with mist following it, this was playing. A wonderful moment that John would have loved.
Ever since I have discovered the magic of Peter Green everything else sounds flat boring and uninteresting to me. I somehow feel that Green's music is ethreal, much more than music. God I love it so much. long Live the legend !!
I have loved Carlos' music since woodstock. But what I did not know was Peter Green's music beside Fleetwood Mac. I have to admit that Carlos' style seems to be inspired by this sweet magnificent guitar music, specially after learning that black magic woman is Peter Greens song. I hope Peter Green tours USA, So Ca.
@zaldivarjohn He's old now. I saw him in Galway, Ireland, still gives me the shivers playing Albatross. Even geniuses dont live forever, but his music sure does, my friend !
@zaldivarjohn It's not the Splinter Group anymore, it's PG and Friends. He has a great lead guitar player, I talked to. Peter doesnt want to give anymore autographs or fuzz like that. Well, Rattlesnake Shake was on, and other good ol stuff. But Pete also mellowed to one of my favourites, Rainy Night in Georgia. You know , I used to live in Atlanta. He sure hasnt lost the feeling !
Strangones. Totally agree. how many non musos say they love Santana, when you comfortably point out that it's 80% Mr green they look vacant.
Like any decent blues player Carlos borrows and doesn't disguise this fact. difference is Peter Green is the Real deal and his touch and taste come through on every track. Although I do quite like a latin rhythm section from time to time.
Take this track, and Peter Green's cover of Otis Rush's "Homework", and you have Carlos Santana's guitar style. While I respect that Carlos always mentions Peter Green (after John Coltrane, and Jimi Hendrix (not even close in his playing)), he's living off of what Peter Green deserved for his influence.
In early 1970, Carlos Santana went to England to see Fleetwood Mac. He asked Peter Green for the permission to record "Black Magic Woman". I hope Peter is paid for this!
And Peter oversaw the Editing of all this track , over dubs the lot; John Mayal just stood by and let him get on with it. Amazing feel to the whole track.
@fuzzygreenduck The fact that John Mayall let Peter Green not only sing on a handful of tracks from "A Hard Road", and allowed him to create this song on his own shows that Mayall really wanted Green to be "the" guy. In fact Mayall hoped to hire Green back into his band around the fall of 1971. Unfortunately by then Peter Green stopped playing guitar, and was digging graves as an occupation. Most of us would consider that insanity, yet when you hear Peter Green's music he was very pure.
@strangeones4 Green didn't need drugs to see the phony side of the music industry. Peter Green was going to leave Fleetwood Mac, with or without drugs. It's the drugs that killed his ambition to play guitar in a minor role (studio session player). He tried for about a year after leaving FM, and gave up. Many talk about rock musicians who "sold out", Peter Green was as pure as they came. He was upset that concert fans needed to pay a pound to see FM live in 1970. What a sensitive soul.
@strangeones4 Unfortunately it seems in many areas, not just music, that pioneers of a style get imitated, have "mainstream" friendly alterations (Black Magic Woman) and the public credit the wrong person.
I think I would be satisfied with my life if I could achieve what Peter has, even without the rivaling Santana's bank balance.
@Parabol0086 That's it in a nutshell, well posted! At least the internet has allowed those who weren't alive (or of age) during that time to really see who deserved the respect. Napster (before the lawsuits) started this, Youtube has made it possible.
amazing playing IMO ..why Peter Green had the world by the balls ..simply cause he played like NO OTHER back then...his phrasing and touch is like no other ..ask BB King..
