  • CLOCKWORK ORANGE - Brilliant!

  • This has also been adopted as the anthem of Europe.

  • Fantastic lyrics

  • its in english you just dont here it in oprea.

  • nvm

  • how disrespectful to womwen calling them babe ur terrible

im 13 and i know right from wrong :@

  • @Marshalbrucemathers9 They're called the Opera Babes, that's what they call themselves.

  • @Marshalbrucemathers9 lol shutup

  • seriously, what language is it?

  • the fact that the 9th symphony can be adapted to english or german or whatever lyrics is a praise for this piece... it has managed to transcend language, culture and other merely human properties... for it stands as the best piece of art depicting godly ideas understood by all creatures at all times!!!

  • 23 deaf people were here

  • @kamikadze230 Beethoven was almost 100% deaf and composed this.

  • Who's hotter? The chick with the short hair, or the chick with the long hair???

    THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

  • @TheIlluminatus503 The book basically brought me to this song. Great book so far!

  • Wow man wow

I love this. A little piece of heaven on Earth.

  • @Zenryobrownwolf ohhh take a chill pile sigh

  • <3 <3 <3

  • To those who are saying this isn't Beethoven's 9th I issue a challenge. I would like to see, on the original piece, the words to this song. Until I see this I will continue to presume that Beethoven left this song wordless for the reason that he knew many would interpret this song many ways, and that not one of those ways would be wrong. I take my Hat off to Andre and the Opera Babes for yet another beautifully performed piece of music.

  • Bellisimooooo!

  • This was pleasant enough, but it's not Beethoven's Ode to Joy. Before you jump down my throat, please hear me out. Firstly, Beethoven, and music of the Romantic Era in general, worked with rather specific forms of music, other forms and harmonies that are available to us now were either not used or not considered - and for good reason as most neo-romantic music is rather weak. Secondly the "Ode to Joy" piece is merely the words of Friedrich Schiller's poem "An die Freude" set by Beethoven to the

  • final movement of his 9th Symphony - the above is not even a translation of "An die Freude" so this cannot even be called a version of it; this is something completely different set to an arrangement of the Choral. Finally - remember by the time that Beethoven wrote this piece of music he was completely deaf and so the point of whether he would like this version is rather moot. Maybe he would see it as better, maybe he would deem it too weak. He wrote the original without being able to hear it

  • any where else but within his head. He obviously wrote it with a specific aim in mind and to change this - to remove part of it's vigour and timbre which so suit the poem which is set to it - is to do just that; to make it different from it's initial intent. I'm not saying that this is bad, but those who say it is not Beethoven are right. It's an arrangement, pleasant to listen to for sure, but nothing more than that. And titled completely wrongly.

  • That was so beautiful. Hearing the Opera Babes with an orchestra and choir and a nice video is a lovely rendition compared to the orchestral versions. The sound is magnificent.

On a side note, why do arguements arise about people like it? If you don't like something, it's fine to say so, and if you don't think this is a good version of Beethoven's 9th then that's your opinion. Respect each other's opinions- someone may believe he wouldn't like it, others do. Be nice!

  • Sorry i dont like it. It´s.. not Beethoven...

  • lol not Beethoven? this play is from Beethoven only performed by somebody else

  • Yes of course but it´s not good pervormed. Beethoven had wrote other and THATS ist Beethoven 9 Symphony not this.

  • @Zenryobrownwolf

How dare you presume that you know that this interpretation is not what Beethoven would have liked? Sure, it doesn't accord to your preferences, but you are a miserable arrogant by daring to suggest this is not Beethoven's 9th.

If you have some mystique way of communicating with the long de-composed Ludwig, let us know.

Frankly, you have no way of knowing that this is NOT his 9th symphony.

Only Beethoven could tell us that.

    Cheers.

  • @ClassicalRelated Well Perhaps because it bears very little resembalnce tp whta he wrote.

  • @ClassicalRelated

There is also a way you can tell - this sounds like a rehash of Del Mar's work - which was - quite frankly- a joke. The leading professor David Levy, an expert, even sneered at it.

  • You're right..it's not Bait Oven...let's dig him up and make him play it for us.

  • Excellent.

  • he's right why does everybody think they're a expert on classical music?

  • Why not? You make a great sweeping statement about it being bad.

How do you know Beethoven wouldn't have liked it?

How do you know it doesn't compare?

Frankly, I am sick of reactions which pretend to have insight in hiw the great original was performed.

Frankly, you are a 21st century citizen, and I respectfully suggest you have no idea as to how Beethoven would have wanted it performed two years after his death (he himself would probably have no idea either).

    Thumbs down to you.

  • @ClassicalRelated

What the hell are you talking about? Beethoven's ninth was played DURING his life time. The Ninth Symphony was premiered on May 7, 1824 in Vienna - Beethoven didn't die until 1827 !

Beethoven was even THERE at the premiere and ASSISTED in DIRECTING the performance. The Kapellmeister was Michael Umlauf and his notes point to his NEED of Beethoven being there. Even though Beethoven was almost certainly deaf by this time - he still knew the entire piece note-for-note.

  • Day by day the dawn is breaking

    On the bond of brotherhood.

    O light of pure intention

    All dissension cast aside

Now, the time to stand together

    No man need alone abide.

  • All believing, all embracing Earth below and sky above. There will never be a power Greater than united love. O light of hope enduring Ever in our hearts reside. Now, the time to stand together. No man may alone abide. All as one in every nation By our bearing will be bound. Peace, the true and humble treasure Through compassion will be found. O light of clearest vision No illusion shall divide. Now, the time to stand together. No man may alone abide.
  • I am sorry for all concerned. This was broadcast from VIENNA.

Why should there have been any doubt about this?

  • i`m sure you know best big man,but can i just take this oppertunity to say these to munters are awfull! i thank u.

  • WTF ITS NOT GERMAN!!!!

not bad tho but its still best in german

  • It's english "nichris5566" ;)

  • What language??

  • Hello,

Don't tell me you are going to revive the language discussion again?

Its ugly head has been reared in the past, and I do not envisage allowing a discussion on this topic again.

  • @nichris5566 german

  • Does anyone recognize the location for this video (the lion statues, etc.) Thanks!

  • A Bavarian girl I know told me it's Vienna.

  • I think it's Bonn.

    Beethoven borns there :)

  • In Europe, thats the best i can give you lol. Italy from the looks of it.

  • Viena , Schonberg castle, i belive

  • In the background you see the yellow castle of Schonbrunn and also the building behind the castle called Gloriette.

  • I also think Leonard Bernstein is one of the best performers of Beethoven's music. His recording of the Ninth Symphony with the Wiener Philharmoniker and Martti Talvela singing the Bass part is one of the greatest performances of that piece.

  • (IMO) the best version of Ode to Joy (Complete) is/was performed by Leonard Bernstein. This man came the closest to being able to understand Beethoven. (Forgive any spelling errors, its 4:00am for me right now)

  • voices of angels

  • best part starts at 2:45

  • ja ja aber ich kann hören sie nicht zu gut... aber das Lied ist gut...

  • Fantastic! What talent! Does anyone have a better recording of this that can be uploaded to play back in YouTube's new HQ mode? We've got to get this incredible version up for everyone to enjoy now and in the future.

  • Truly a song worthy of the highest honors man can recieve!!! If god had a theme song, I'd hope this would be it!

  • This is it. But "Ode to Joy" is only a sixteenth note in His infinite orchestral masterpiece.

  • Lol. Well said. But still, a sixteenth note found within the expanse of the eternal is quite a note to behold. No?

  • What we have in this life are only symbols which point to an incomprehensively grander reality. Sure, many of these symbols impress us, but they are powerful because our intuition tells us that they are just a good tease. It is what remains hidden below the iceberg, that we sense and yet cannot see, that causes us to pine. And we stupidly focus on the flimsy little symbols poking above water that only help convey the insight. Ode to Joy is a dazzling symbol, but a mere shadow of things to come.

  • I never heard "Ode of joy" in an english version. So it was a little bit arkward, but enjoyable also.

Only for information: The part of Beethovens No. 9 were Ode of joy is sung is the anthem of the european union but only instrumental.

Because it should be neutral but a melody everbody recognize. They suceeded, didn´t they?

  • Tjami81:

LOL! I can only sing it in English. The director of my grammar school choir taught songs and hymns which were fairly advanced for children, such as Mozart's Exultante, Jubilate, and the best sopranos had solid coloratura technique before they could spell the word. However, she taught us to sing in Latin and English only. Yes, the EU succeeded with their choice. My hands are itching for my piano as I type this.

  • This is one of my favourite versions of "Ode to Joy" but then it's a beautiful piece of music however it is sung. Thanks for posting :-o)

  • Bravo! Beautiful! Always a treat to listen to.

  • It's a shame the lyrics are so hard to understand; they are awesome! If you want to know what they are, do a search for "Ode To Joy Andre Rieu Opera Babes lyrics" :)

  • Once you have the lyrics in front of you it just kind of clicks and then it becomes easy to understand.

  • The beauty and soul of mankind is interwoven into the pure tones of this musical piece that encompasses the heart and soul of man's romanticism.

Thank you for sharing. May the light of this song touch China, touch every nation, touch every human

Let it forever ring in the hearts of mankind!

  • I dont have anything against this beautiful Song in English. They can sing it in Spanish, in Japanese, in Russian so that all People can understand his text and that they can live after this wonderfull ideas behind this Song of World-Peace and that every Human is a Brother and Sister to each other.

But I hate People which only want to make Money and thats the only reason that they sing this song in English.

This wonderfull Song should be in translate in any Language but for Free!!

  • Hi,

This video has attracted an endless discussion about the merits (or not) of an English version of this song.

I do not entertain to have this discussion continued ad nauseam.

From now on, any messages attempting to revive this discussion will be deleted.

    ClassicalRelated (aka Gerrit)

  • Regarding the "language" controversy: I laughed as I realized that the diction is so bad I initially couldn't tell in which language they are singing. This is neither "Beethoven 9" nor "An Die Freude," but an arrangement of one of the greatest melodies ever written. The words don't matter. Beethoven would like this. It isn't his his symphony but is moving and beautiful in any language. As G B Shaw said,"The poetry that lies too deep for words does not lie too deep for music." That's what counts.

  • PS PTCello,

I'll let your reaction stand, even though it appeared just after I posted my note about ending the discusion about language versions of this song.

    I quite like your contribution.

  • Thank you. Actually, we must have been writing at the same time, because when I posted my note, Your comment had not yet appeared.

  • Im English, but I do think it is better in German, or it will end up having its origins hyjacked

  • it's breathtaking yet it felt so corny... hahahahahaha... but still wonderful performance...

  • The german version is the bast.

  • Yes, it is English!!!

  • Do they sing in German ? This version is a little weird.

  • i think it's english

  • The ode to joy is always sung in german.

  • Nice girls.......

  • Horror.....

  • Es gibt weitaus miesere Arrangements. Ich mag Rieu trotzdem nicht.

  • Too bad Beethoven was deaf when he wrote this, imagine writing something so beautiful and not being able to here it.

  • But luckily he can't hear this awful rendition!

  • A true ode to Beethoven!

  • Beautiful!

  • Inspired! How can this fail to move the soul

  • Sounds fantastic! Andre Rieu & his orchestra with the opera babes is top grade stuff to listen to.

  • die stimme un den text auf deutsch....das wär dann wohl die beste interpretation dieses liedes

  • Mouais... rien ne vaut l'original :P

  • English lyrics? Epic win. I can't make out all of it, though. Does anyone have a transcript?

  • the translation is pretty bad i think

  • I can't really make out what they're singing at all, so...

  • Just Google "Opera Babes Ode Joy Lyrics". Theirs is not a translation or even an interpretation of the Schiller poem but rather entirely new lyrics in English. For Schiller sung in English may I suggest my You Tube homepage : )),,,,
