  • modest grave for a modest man........we love you MJH

  • Thank you for posting that. He's one on my all-times faves. Interesting cemetery.

  • hey diggin the jimmy rogers

  • Jimmy's sound just seemed appropriate. Good ear.

  • thanks for posting this vid!

  • Our pleasure.

  • Rest in peace<3

  • crazy.. thats cool though thanks guys!

  • You are welcome.

  • Thanks..it looks like a place he would enjoy...with friends and family in the quiet green woods.

  • Sure. Only problem is that I lost the memory stick and the flash drive that I had all my pictures on. Bummer. Guess i'll just have to go back.

  • Hey, I tried several times to respond but something was up with the server or something. Yes. I have been to RJ graves 1,2 and three. Even in death, a man of mystery.

  • We have the comments for John Hurt on approval, maybe that was the problem. As far as Mississippi Fred McDowell all I know is that he is buried in Como, Mississippi in Hammond Hill M. B. Church Cemetery. I don't know if you're familiar with that or not. I may research it out of curiosity. Have you taken photos of the graves you've visited?

  • Not yet. It's about 5hrs. north of here so I gotta wait on a long weekend. Make it an overnighter you know. Have been to RJ graves 1,2and 3. Got pictures and all. Eventually , i'll have to take a week off and cover the entire state and get everyone checked off of my list then start over in Texas.

  • I also need to find Mississippi Fred Mcdowell. Any suggsestions?

  • Not yet. I'll probably need a long weekend off to go up there. It's about five to six hours away so it will be an overnighter. And yes, I have been to all three of RJ's graves. It makes sense that the grave north of greenwood is the real deal.

  • A million thanks for the directions. I really appreciate it. I would have probably never found it otherwise. Once again, thanks.

  • You are welcome. Have you visited it already? Also, have you been to the three robert Johnson locations?

  • I know of Avalon, MS. How exactly can I find the cemetary though?

  • It's kind of a tricky one and it is on posted land. If you scroll up this comments page the exact directions are there. It is about 10 comments from the top.

  • Been to most of the famous gravesites in the delta with the exception of Johns Hurt's. Just where off of Hwy 7 is it? Anybody got directions? Thanks.

  • What was this man famous for? can somebody tell me please?

  • MJH was a country blues guitarist. He is revered by blues enthusiasts and guitarists - not just for his music, but also for his demeanour after his rediscovery in the 60's when he was quite old.

  • Many people like this mean well but have no idea just how disrespectful they really are or how oblivious they might be. Black people especially live along with it as a daily practice. They must think we're morons at times. Most country people of all races are buried in family areas that get grown over. It's the country, trees grow.

  • "people like this?" What a condescending little predjudiced comment you've made. One thing we are oblious to is race. We've visited graves all over the country and we have respect for the dead. We just don't think you need to stand solemnly and recite Gregorian Chants. Maybe you should visit our website and do a little reading before you hint at our racism. My grandparents are buried in the country. You are being just as narrow-minded and "oblvious" as you seem to think we are.

  • there is something disrespectul about your video. you really don't know much about MJH or you would know why this video sucks.

  • I'm from Mississippi and i am just wondering where is JH buried. I will try to check that out when i am there again.

  • I agree with the guy below. This is disrespectful. It's juvenile. Makes me feel sad for Mr. Hurt.

  • I've been to the gravesite and both it and John Hurt deserved far more respect than the insensitive idiots who parked blocking the road and wanted to steal money so they could wash their car. John Hurt wanted to be buried near his wife in Avalon, Ms.

  • Yes, with the heavy traffic area we were in we should have slipped into one of the handy parking ramps. We were joking about the money, you dim-witted, condescending, uptight, fuck wad.

  • why race and land brought into this???

    two guys visiting MJH's gravesite.

thats some good shit. RIP MJH

  • Wow... death2ur... sorry about the oversensitive nincompoops. Your comments about the carwash were OBVIOUSLY unrelated and in regard to the fact that you had to go through some backroads and got your car dirty. The comments accusing you of racism say more about the people making them than they say about you. I hope Americans get over this oversensitivity fad.

  • Thanks so muuch. We couldn't agree more.

  • I'm interested in finding out if you guys know more about Hurt's burial. It looks like they just buried him in a clearing somewhere. Is it a small family cemetery? Has it been abandoned by the caretakers? It looks like it's far, far off the beaten path, so I'm just curious.

  • Actually, the cemetery is in backwoods Mississippi. It is on posted land and we needed some intricate directions to find it. I don't think it's a Hurt "family" cemetery. John Hurt was a simple man who wanted to be buried near where he was born, I believe.

  • This Gentleman was a part of our Southern History.

Raise to the fact; he was also gifted because he

did not see color, he only saw what was before him.

Did you know that when he was a kid, his Aunt Leely had a dog that she wanted to put down because the dog got it's rear end cut by barb wire and was bleeding from it's tail.

The Gentleman, as a child, nursed that dog back to walking. The Dog's name was Cutter.

    He remains a true gentleman.

  • A joke about taking change for the car wash is implied racism? You made a point of his race so you could hold it up as a trophy of your tolerance. "Look at me, I'm a southern gentleman. I even stand up for the black man." How condescending. Where as we visited to pay our respects to a man's music. We didn't give thought to his race.

  • You visited to pay respect to a man while cracking jokes the entire time.

Grown men acting like immature 14 year olds. Congrats.

  • A 20 year old acting like he's an uptight 80 year old. Congrats back.

  • BTW....As You Seem Yankee Travellers.....You are always welcome here in DeLand Florida.

Never for self, but for others. Non Silba Sed Anthar.

Some things are best left alone.

John Hurt had a gift, that is why he was left alone.

  • Wow, You had a gift.

    You Found It.

    You found it funny?

    BTW, Next time be Gentlemen.

This from a member of the SCV. (Sons Of Confederate Veterans)

Watch your language and your steps.

He Was a Gentleman; regardless of race!

  • We don't appreciate your insinuation that because he was a black man we were disrespectful. Maybe you should take a long look in the mirror. You're the one who brought up his race.

  • With all due respect, Sir, When you commented outside leave a nickel, " "Car Wash....etc. " you crossed a line. Racism is not about about people, Racism is about the "insinuations" in deliberate comment; a mirror of liberal mentality when lost amid comprehension. My apology extended for the Yankee comment.

However, it seems that you were truly upset by my comments.....

Can we find a place to slow down, have a cup of coffee, and really talk?

Again, You are always welcome here.

  • I must agree Boys. Next time keep ya mouth shut. Play some music insteed. On second thoughts Dont bother!

  • "keep ya mouth shut", "on second thoughts", what? are you trying to be an old blues man? Wannabe.

  • I've been there myself. But that is besides the point. You guys come off as a bunch of disrespectful hoosiers. Disgraceful. You should go back and film it with your mouth taped shut.

  • Or maybe we could tape your mouth to one of our asses. Hoosiers? I don't remember seeing any of us with a basketball. Keep trying on those put-downs.

  • Or, you could just turn down the sound, nimrod.

  • Nice tunes you got playing, Jimmie Rodgers is awesome

  • Yeah, we figured the "Singing Brakeman" would give it just the right atmosphere. Thanks for the comment.

  • that place looks great in the woods ...thanks for that...and to all who say you have no respect i dont understand... youve shown alot of respect just by going there..he or she who you visit doesnt want sadness and serious...

  • Thanks, we couldn't agree more.

  • You're a clod

  • Thank you very much for this. It is a peaceful place for such a great blues musician to rest. May he rest in peace. John Hurts music has brought a lot of joy to many peoples lives and it is my hope that his music is never forgotten.

  • The key to visiting gravesite is respect. I'm sure the gentle soul of Mississippi John Hurt smiles when he has visitors. He rests his ol' bones in the soft embrace of a place he loved so well. God bless him on his walk down that lonesome valley.

  • Well said.

  • I wanted to take time to apologise for my negative comments. We have at least one thing in common

1- We're John Hurt fans who try to buy up all the recordings we can find by him

2-We're guitarists who try our best to play like him

    3-or both or the above

So please accept my thanks for showing me a place on the earth that i mostlikely will never see myself.

    Peace

  • Hey, no problem. We get a lot of negative comments way worse than yours. We come off as disrespectful at first, but we sincerely love all of the musicians and people we visit and we never desecrate the graves. Thanks again, love and peace. The Death2ur.

  • I beg your pardon, you only were kidding about taking something left there. I wasn't paying attention.

  • "Come back and the van will be gone"? WTF?

You took something left by others and then joked about getting you van washed? You guys WERE NOT in the right state of mind to visit such a Holy Place.

  • Those are your values, not ours.

  • We never take things left by others. What the fuck are you talking about? Every place is a Holy place if you are a real believer.

  • i kind of like the fact that it's a real backwoods black southern cemetery. i mean if the gravesite had been in urban hollywood or some other area how appropriate would that really be? who cares about elaborate burials when you're dead anyways?

  • His gravesite is a reflection on the humble man he was. It's perfect for him. I've seen the grand Hollywood graves, and you're right, it doesn't make them any less dead.

  • Appreciate the video, I'd also like to pay my respects. I live in Mississippi and would it be too much to ask where exactly this is?

  • Thanks. St. James cemetery is in Avalon. From I-55 take Hwy 7 west 18 miles to Avalon. Once in town, turn left at the post office and head east towards the bluffs about 3.7 miles then turn left on a gravel road. It's easy to miss so look closely. You'll have to drive into the woods about two miles. As you're driving you will see a gravel quarry on your left. Be careful because a gun club owns the land and they do not like trespassers. Good Luck!

  • How nice to know Mississippi John Hurt has such a peaceful final resting place.

  • I would have disenterred his mouldering skeleton, and used his metatarsal as a 'slide', I'm sure after a good polishing it would have an awesome tone. Hope you got your car washed.

  • I just wish such a remarkable artist had a gravesite that showed how much of a positive influence his music has had.

  • Thank you, actually we did visit Robert Johnson's grave. The video is on here as well. Just type in death2ur in the search box and scroll on down.

  • That is crazy. You guys didn't take the bullet did you? You know his spirit would come back to haunt you. How did you know where to look?

  • We never take things from graves that are left by others. Just one of our rules. We found him in The Tombstone Tourist. It's a great book about Musicians that have passed on. It directs you step by step to all their graves and has some fantastic information on many great artists and some we didin't know about. Thanks for the comment.

  • It was more like a joke and I figured you guys had more respect for someone like him. Good job on the video. I'm agree with tymjar. I think that such an great blues artist should have something more than a backroad gravesite. Where is the justice? In the 21st century people like Anna Nicole Smith's stupid face (as well as many other no talent musicians) get to be on every channel you look. Thanks.

  • I am sure that he is buried where he wanted to be.You dont need to put him up on public display in some tourist graveyard.simple and humble thats how it should be because thats how he was.

  • Very nice. I am very familar with the area and you captured it quite well! And it is indeed a peaceful and modest place. Appropriate place for Mississippi John to rest his weary bones!

I am surprised you did not take the short trip to one of Robert Johnson's burial sites while you were in the area!

  • Interesting. John Hurt and his music are very special to me and thousands of others in this world. Thanks for posting the vid. Ive seen a photo of his grave stone but this is great to see the surrounding area. Very peacefull and modest like ole MJH himself. How far out of the way was the cemetary. if im going through mississippi i'd like to make a stop.
