I have run a number of class 5 trips in the western US, including the upper Animas, Gore, Pine Creek, Forks of the Kern, Cherry, Burnt Ranch, and Cal Salmon.
The upper Animas does NOT have the biggest or technically toughest rapids, but I believe it is the most dangerous, due to one thing--the temperature of the water. The water is often so cold it is shocking, due to the 9300 foot put-in (highest commercial launch in contiguous US). That cold water really zaps your strength when swimming.
