Something is not right. If the island was once filled with trees, and if the islanders had been cutting the trees, then where were the wood crowns? It was at around 1600s that they started cutting trees, I bet at least some percentage of the millions of wood crowns might still be on the ground to this day. There is no way that they can't find signs of root systems in a mere 400 years. If scientists can find pollen in the clay, I don't see why they can't find pieces of root fragments as well.
Funny. Dutch are among the first people reaching the island. There's a fungus infection, called Dutch elm disease. It is killing almost all the elms in Europe. Couldn't it be a fungus infection that killed all the trees? In such small island the transmission rate would be very high.
what a shock. Are there any programs made anymore that they don't work in preaching a sermon about global warming/'we're killing our planet' bullcrap?
@7judas77 You misunderstand the point. It's not about ecology but about resources and the fact that the people mismanaged the little resources they had to terrible consequence. Today of course there are still examples of ecological mismanagement, but that is not the real problem facing us now. The problem we are facing is the depletion of our most important resources such as metals, minerals, oil etc. which we are using up at an ever increasing rate. So the analogy is in a sense very accurate.
agree with lot of ppl here.... we are doing the same thing to the entire planet. Self destructing it by more cars, more air conditioners, more electronics, hell lotta wastage and use and through mentality.
polynesians had totem symbols . tiki from new zealand that represented something about their society. the bird men carvings could be the symbol of the ruling tribe.over ten thousand years it would be hard to defoliate a big island, fire or disease is another idea. egyptians built all the pyramids and supported a big culture and still had trees left in a desert.
And what's the outcome of the above video? In my opinion (and may be I am wrong) that was a mini-scale prophetical sign of what it would become the world at the end of the 20th century beginning of the 21st century. I hope everything would turn to be alright afterwards.
No we are not. Don't buy into the environmentalist propaganda. We've learned from our mistakes and at least in the US we practice land management, planting new trees to replace those cut down.
Let's count how many western explorers practiced this when they came to the Americas...too many to name. This had nothing to do with there God's....If so, who's to blame for the ecological problems that we are dealing with today all around the world?
If a crisis happened 100 years prior to the Dutch arriving... that is only 2-3 generations. Wouldn't the inhabitants oral narratives have contained something more than scant references. Could the survivors have decided to carry on stories of that time? Such violent time could have wiped everyone out. So even a cautionary tale of getting along and protecting the environment would have existed.
I dont belive the part about the trees. I think even cave people would be smarter than that to not use them all. Im wondering if those craters are from meteors. they would have engulfed the trees in flames. I still have yet to see a documentary that goes over those craters.
@stillnessONtheWAY yes im sure environmental devastation is a pure lie . Sir if we ever meet in person i will personally castrate to , to limit your stupidity passing onto next generation .
I think it is very possible an outside force could have possibly done this. There are Many reasons for lack of trees. I do not think any can sompletely wipe out a whole island of trees... It is proven that so called "discoveries of new land and obbsession to converse one religion into the other even if it means killing, torturing, etc.) It has to have been the act of an outside force! = no conversion, killing spree! differences, killing spree,.
@EbayFigureReviews777 meteorite strong enough to destroy every tree on the island would have killed every human on the island . Then again why im telling this to a retard like you ?
From Jared Diamond....what words did the inhabitant of Easter Island say when he cut down the last Palm Tree? (1) "Jobs, not Trees!!!!", or (2) "Don't worry, technology will solve our problems, we will find a substitute for wood", or (3) "There may be other trees on Easter Island that we have not found yet, we need to do more research, the ban on logging is premature, it is all just fear mongering."
what these people made is a good metaphore for today's oil use. Everyone knows that carbon emissions will bring the end to our earth, but norwegians are happier cause they found new oil reserves in their land
what religion has caused alot of problems not saying it hasnt done any good but look at the world today as you said it look it hate religion its a bunch of bullshit to a certain point but im not saying i dont believe in god, im saying I dont give a shit about religion. because i can pray all day all week all month and I still wont win the lottery but hey it doesnt work that way right (religion) lol
This is just like today! They ruint nature to buíld there statues, we ruint nature to build our houses and factories. All destruction on earth is basicly man-made. I'm just saying
Some people, such as Jared Diamond, suggest that the Easter Islanders had used their palm trees for firewood. After all you need wood to make fires. But of course that still makes the disaster man made.
Clever comment ccyndi1 but I didn't say fishing with reeds did I? Anyway, they obviously had certain means of living unknown to us and I never claimed that I could replicate those means.
They say there was nothing to make a boat out of but it is known that there were reeds around the lake in the volcanic crater. Anyway, could they not have caught fish from the edge of some shore of the island the way you would from a riverbank?
Not possible, fish live on reef, and the closest reef was over 300 miles away, and they simply didn't have the technology for deep sea fishing. (We barely do.)
So when there were fish, you are trying to tell me that they would paddle out 300 MILES on a regular basis to get fish? Excuse me if that sounds a little incredible. Not all marine life lives of coral reefs.
The marine life they had the ability to catch did, and they were great seafarers. But they didn't just rely on fish. There was virutually no protein on the island, so they brought with them chickens, yams and rats. And if you consider that the closest island was over 2,000 miles away. 300 miles is not to terribly far to travel. (In case you're worried about my information, I'm in the middle of an archeology class and we just went over this.)
You seem to be concerned about my information also SeleneMoon and I have also studied this subject somewhat. Regardless of how far the closest land is to Easter Island (and I am aware of this by the way) 300 miles is still a very very very long way for a fishing trip, please get this into context. As for the protein available on the island, that is not a matter I am disputing although you seem to have overlooked the fact that they did grow sweet potatoes there.
I wasn't trying to invalidate your argument with that point. As I said, I was not debating that particular issue. The 300 mile theory is the one I have a problem with. To be honest, most of your other points are sound enough..
I know the 300 mile thing seems far fetched, but there aren't any other reefs in the area, or evidence of other reefs that may have been since destroyed. It's the way the island was formed. There were not any gentle slopes in the water. It was all very steep and abrupt. (Am I making any sense? Cause I'm catching a cold and am not sure I'm being entirely clear.)
Theres not much coral in the waters surrounding the island and fish need coral to prospur. The Easter Islanders once had a diet of Tuna and Porpoises which are generally found out at sea in deeper water. They could fish for them when they had trees to build canoes but once the trees were gone so to the capability to catch tuna etc...
who told them there are no trees??? Did they ever go there??? it's like any other island, one side is dry and the other is tropical... i guess they need to make it dramatic for TV

The theory that it was all the Rapa Nui fault is actually controversial. Some believe that the deforestation was caused by the rats they brought (they ate fruit and palm nuts which were needed to regenerate the forest)

The trees are basically ruined when used for moving the statues. They bust apart and aren't reusable for that nor making boats. Least that's what I saw in another video :)
