I was an avid TaB drinker in the 1970s and 80s. I loved it. When they started putting that nutra-sweet crap in TaB, my Tab days were over. It tasted horrible. The old TaB went so well with dark Barcardi ;o) Today they're putting saccharin in TaB again, but they're mixing it with that nutra-sweet junk. Bring back the old TaB!!!
NutraSweet was actually a quantum leap forward for TAB. I remember when it first started to get popular and my mom drank it. They made it with saccharin. It tasted like someone pissed through a bag of sugar, let it distill into a pop can, added cola and let it set for a week before putting it on ice. Needless to say, it was not as refreshing as advertised.
Yeah, this ad for Tab came out when they were putting NutraSweet in all of the soft drinks it was like a fad then. It really doesn't matter because Tab is nasty.
lol oh jeeze....dude they didn't cut the top off the can, its an older style of an aluminum can. I think that one actually had a peel off top for the opening?
Contents lasting longer may have been a side effect, but it was a law that forced the design change of ring pulls for tins. The little rings with attached triangular tabs of aluminium were sharp, and people just dropped them... they were everywhere you walked.
Grass in parks was covered in them, especially after events with lots of teenagers. You could sweep them up off roads and paving but they would dig into soft soil and stay there.
It shouldn't make any difference but I'm a good madam, not a sir ;)
I don't know where the law originated, making detachable pulls illegal.
As late as 1987 an American (my boyfriend then) told me the U.S. had a system of paying (don't know who paid it) a token amount for ring pulls. Kids would collect them for pocket money. Maybe only in certain states? Don't know. He was from Maryland.
Problem: now ring pulls get in the drink. Any contamination could be on them.. nasty!
This is the Coca-Cola company's reaction to the fact that sales of Tab were declining. The ads for the product have been discontinued, but it's still very much available. You just have to know where to look.
I think she's former supermodel Cindy Harrell, who was in her prime in the late '70's to the '80's. The one in this Tab commercial does in fact resemble Crystal Bernard somewhat, but I'm pretty sure it's actually Cindy instead of Crystal.

Tab is still sold in grocery stores in Kansas City and Omaha. I bought two 12-packs on sale the other day in Nebraska.

@polarbear3333333333 You forgot to mention the taste of kerosene that characterized saccharin-sweetened TaB.

my bad!
sorry!
i was born after this add was made!

(so is it like the old Slim fast cans? with the real ring pull)
Sk8pUnKbArBiE 3 years ago
Bingo, they replaced it with the current style due to the discovery of the contents of cans being able to last longer.

Best not to buy drinks in cans at all, anyway.

Very nice! I tip my hat in your general direction good sir, I never knew about the changes in law as a reason either.

@petey8887 As true as this is, Coca-Cola has brought back Tab. First, as an energy drink called Tab Energy. Then, brought it back as Tab.

That was 2 years after Diet Coke was introduced. TaB slowly left our fridge shelfs and was replaced with Diet Coke.
I still drink TaB

Of course they changed it back to saccharin..which I think made a difference in the taste..i wonder how it would taste with Splenda!
