  • No conductor is as Frutwängler, I agree. Carlos Kleiber is also very convincing!

  • Ahh I just find it here. Thanks for uploading. Perfect performance!

  • Want to hear more of this wonderful symphony? There is a third movement, a Scherzo. Nine bars were completely orchestrated by Schubert the rest is a piano score. I found something very interesting here on youtube, an reconstruction.

    Enjoy!

  • Poor Franz...Looking so deeply into the frail nature of humanity..We come to this life and we depart again..

  • The end of one of the most beautiful, grand and powerful performances of this work I ever heard; from the audience noises, I ascertain that it is a live performance. Furtwangler was always on another plane from most conductors; most of his performances are spiritual experiences, and sound as if he's composing the music on the spot; so spontaneous and musical, as if one is hearing the music for the first time.

  • Thank you for your informed and perceptive comments. I agree entirely - Furtwängler is capable of such spiritual insight and transcendence. This is by far my favorite recording of this symphony. Beecham is also very good, but much more 'mortal', more human. Furtwängler is in another world.

This is live, February 10, 1952.

  • you are right. Furtwängler is another world and I think there is no conductor today, who could conduct this work in a similar way.

  • @vstasov Yup!
