Ok, 4 year psych major, the flirting I get. But no friend can date an ex is clearly manipulative, controlling behavior. People who are not compatible should not hold grudges and keep compatible people apart just because they were your friend first. You mentioned "years with an ex" so I assume the word love was exchanged but not enough for them to be happy unless with you (aka. conditional love). Life's too short for ex's to "play God" and keep soulmates apart on some friendship technicality.
