okay so i"m a sentimental mushy, but this scene is the best scene of self sacrifice in the entire series!Who else would give up immortality for love than Arwen?!
@in2universe He is a descendent of the numenoreans. The most powerful race of men. They became mightier in force even than the elves and had a vast sea empire based on the Island of Numenor given to them by the Valar Gods. They were of a tribe called the Edain who fought bravely with the Elves in the first age and were so blessed with very long life, bodies that never grow weak and frail as they age (they age very well) and have other gifts also. Aragorn is perhaps the last of them.
@MarianaPhoenix Yup, much more. But if you read the appendices you find the scene when they first met (and Aragorn fell in love with her), when she eventually returned his feelings, Elrond's ultimatum (that he would not give up his daughter to anyone less than the king of both Arnor and Gondor), and then a final scene before Aragon's death. Tolkien wrote plenty about them he just couldn't fit it in the narrative.
@NawniColes I read the 2nd book too and there was nothing. I just remember i read in first one that they were looking at eachother, and Arwen was breaking his heart. I assume all this you mentioned is 3rd one? Accoding to movie, there was nothing about how they met, only when she already wanted to give up the immortal life and gave him evenstar. Book says Galadriel gave him the evenstar. They just seem like 2 different stories.
@MarianaPhoenix It's in the appendices at the end of the third book, Appendix A, part I, section (v).
The movie does have some different scenes but if you know the story when you watch this scene you can see hints of the original tale. Of course all that stuff about Arwen riding out and bringing Frodo to Rivendell, and her almost leaving Middle-earth, and her life being connected to the fate of the Ring is all nonsense contrived to give Liv Tyler more screen time.
@MarianaPhoenix The brooch Galadriel gave him is never called 'evenstar', but she only gave it to him because Arwen left it with her to give to him. The important thing about it in the book is that it earns him the name Elessar, meaning 'The Elfstone' which it had been foretold that he would be called. And in other works Tolkien hinted that the stone gave healing powers, so Aragorn's ability was increased by the time he entered the Houses of Healing compared to healing Frodo on Weathertop.
This is when WOMEN pushes MEN to decide about their own desire and wishes, this is something similiar to Adrian's support to Rocky when he have to be strong, she was there to make him back on track. That's the true feeling. I think Aragorn was never gonna make it king without Arwen, specially this scene.
@Aneczka27 life of the Valar is in the necklace and if she gives it away she cannot step to Undying Lands and so chooses long mortal life with all its bitterness as she will find out in the end of their days.
@soccerskills93 In the necklace there is not the life of the Valar. The necklace is a sign of true love that why she gave it to Aragorn. But is has nothing to do with her immortality. She has to chooce an immortal or an mortal life. And because she chooce to be mortal she cannot go to the Undying Lands. You can read this in "The Silmarillion". There was the story of Earendil and Elwing (Elrond's parents). And there it's said why Elrond, Arwen and some other can chooce.
@jdlaw001 I think its both a symbol of her beauty and immortality. Elves can choose when to end their life they are immortal until they die from battle some otherevent. They are born again in a distant land that the elves sail off to at the end of the Lord of the rings the return of the king(I think) where they live in immortality. When Elves are betrothed to each other, they never break that promise, they never divorse nor commit adultery, nor sex before marriage. So basicaly her devotion is 100%
@silverwolfalpha They sail to Valinor where the Valar gods and Maia lesser gods reside, and While Valinor proper is the part of Aman inside the Pelóri, the "shore of Valinor" where the Elves live is considered a part of Valinor as well. Valinor was once located on Earth but the Valar withdrew to another place out of space and time due to various reasons. Eru the creator is responsible for their creation.

i just learnt that aragorn is 90 years old but looks very young, why is that?
in2universe 8 months ago
@in2universe because he is a numenorean descendant and because of that he has long life. Aragorn lives to be 210 i believe...

"Asiei thu uthwara varathor, Aragorn. Hu' ar lei, ha hu' ar li'n."
^^--as close as "The Languages of Tolkien's Middle Earth" will allow me to come to an accurate translation of what Arwen said, back into Elvish. :)

Why are Arwen and Aragorn so little mentioned in the first book when from what i see there are more scenes about them in the movie then there?

The way Aragorn looks at Arwen at 0:46 is so sweet.... You can see the effect she has on him. It's heart-breakingly beautiful.

So that necklace piece is her immortality?
jdlaw001 2 years ago
This can be a symbol of her immortality. When she gave the necklace Aragorn, she ensured him of her devotion. But mayby I'm wrong:)

@jdlaw001 No. Elves make a conscious thought, a decision to become mortal. It is just a symbol of her elven light and immortality and love.
