@stickybelvedere hahaha. your films will dominate his? he's made seven feature films, and four of those have worldwide box office records. you will never, ever be a more successful filmmaker than him.
@stickybelvedere To say something that you haven't done anything yet to dominate someone else just shows how petty and pathetic you are, Cameron is a genius and nothing you say will change that!
His story as a movie director is extraordinary. He's directed some of the best movies I've ever seen. He stretches the boundaries and takes the risks needed to make the success of the films he creates. He's a very brilliant man in many aspects, but mostly in the aspect that he gets what he wants because he doesn't let fear become an obstacle.
I admire him as a business man, but I don't think his films are great. Actually they are naive, and completely market driven. His documentaries about Jesus and the Exodus are complete bullshit. Thumbs down for a twat!
S'that fakery of Hollywood that comes through in every celebrity interview, when they say so many nice things so rapidly and seemingly without feeling that after the fifth or sixth celebrity interview you simply stop believing anything they say is genuine. I think people dislike him because he lacks a degree of uh, humility. "I'm the king of the world!" Didn't help. He's indicative, me thinks, common of Hollywood. If The Lord of the Rings had been directed by Americans and filmed in the States, you know those hours and hours of extras would be of American after American blowing wind up one another's arses, and the idea would be to convey 'heart', rather than just film it, as it happens, because it's genuine, and not an idea for DvD extras. lol
haha i cant believe people hold this guy on such a high platform. The idea of the film was highly unoriginal. The guy spent many years on the film yet he was unable to write a decent script.
@helpdonate1 You saying this right after watching the speech shows that you have completely misunderstood his main motivation for creating Avatar. The unique and complex world of Pandora is made up of several details similar to our world that we take for granted on a regular basis. He didn't just spend 12 years developing complex technology just to make pretty-looking Tree moss and exploit Michael Bay-like explosions, he wants us to see a part of the unexplored world from his perspective.
In the practice room of all endeavors, failure is an option, but not fear, that's true; on the outside, it's the other way around. James Cameron has always been my idol ever since the first Terminator. He's really never really made a bad film. His wekest film I think is True Lies, and True Lies is a pretty darn good movie.
Fear is not an option?! He actually made himself by selling fear! He put his nightmare – Terminator on the screen so people paid money to catch his disease. Not mentioning twisting female icon in to a muscular freak with the bipolar. How many life’s has been and going to be broken?
He would be better off stick with what he liked to do – diving.
thats because ur an idiot. u knew EXACTLY what was going to happen b4 u walked into the theater. in other worlds the movie didnt move you because it was SO predicable.
@britoca avatar didnt deserve the oscar. yes it was the event of 09 but just because everyone saw it doesnt mean its better than hurt locker, which its not. the only reason people say that is because avartar appealed to a WAY larger demographic. most ppl didnt see avatar for the story or acting or action. they saw it cuz it was different. to be honest the movie drags on for about an hour and a half in the middle.
on youtube, under Michael Bay videos, bay fanboys comparing Michael Bay to James Cameron and Steven Spielberg. And Bay wins. I couldn't stop laughing.
The message of The Hurt Locker: It's "noble" to leave your wife and child and join a war that makes no sense. The message of Avatar: Love and respect nature and life itself. I understand why the death-cult of Hollywood would gravitate toward a war advertisement like The Hurt Locker. Even the violence of the Terminator films have a humanist sense of resisting mechanization. Cameron has a soul and a searching mind. A rare thing in the film industry.
The reason people don't like James Cameron is because despite his unique world and ideas, his story lines are exactly the opposite (. His saving throw is that he's a great story teller. You may have heard that story before, but the way Cameron tells it is a unique experience.
He toiled for 40yrs into film hollywood wow that was the real passion and that was the real destiny.... u rock always... from u let me come one day as a great movie director.... wonderful speech.... i can see james cameron teared at the last minute where he says "FAILURE IS AN OPTION BUT FEAR IS NOT" great words....

An ambitious film that is so breathtaking, it detracts you from the fact that Cameron's characters are caricatures...I watched it free in HD quality at
I was a big fan of James Cameron when I was a kid... had posters of his films on my walls. But seeing that recent video of him yelling at that guy for asking for his autograph changed all that. I can't in good conscience support him anymore.
You do realize that guy was just trying to get it to sell that poster on EBay and Cameron in that video even said "I know what this is about". The guy had a video crew waiting with him to record Cameron doing something just like that. The next day the poster was on ebay.
@Cannibalzz You do realize that guy was just trying to get it to sell that poster on EBay and Cameron in that video even said "I know what this is about". The guy had a video crew waiting with him to record Cameron doing something just like that. The next day the poster was on ebay
"Failure is an option, but Fear is not!" ... That about sums it up, doesn't it.
We have to keep pushing forward, as bravely and as "aggressively" as we can ... that's what makes us human: Gazing at the stars and settling for nothing less than reaching for them. Failure is bound to happen every now and then, but as long as we keep moving forward we'll still be "human" in a future post-human world.
I can't believe that The Abyss only barely broke even :( It's a great movie. At least I suppose it has added to James Cameron making a name for himself.
the titanic story was awesome. makes me appreciate the movie to know that it benefited science. Avatar in much the same way, as it paved roads to future awesomeness and proved that expensive spectacles can be enormously profitable. I want spectacles!!!!
Avatar was THE cinema event of 09, I can't believe they didn't give him the best motion picture oscar, ridiculous.
No one is going to be sitting around 10 years from now talking to his friends and going "Remember when the Hurt Locker came out??? Wow, that was crazy!"
Avatar was beautiful, it demonstrated extremely innovative and genius use of special effects, but plot-wise it was completely void, the dialogue was pretty predictable and the acting mediocore at best. I still thought it was a good movie, but even so I wouldn't call it the best movie of the year because it was basically very good looking space adaptation of Pocahontas.
Also, please note that the best motion picture Oscar is not about "the most popular picture of the year".
1/2: well, that's your opinion and this is mine: Personally, acting itself doesn't make the movie for me. You can have awesome acting about cutting potatoes for preparing french fries; couldn't care less, understand? Stat Wars had also not the best of acting, and yet, it's one of the most important movies ever made, ever, right up there with 2001.
And the story was done before? So what??? How many good movies are there covering the same story? Did Dances With Wolves suck as well? Thought not.
Point is, at the end of the show, Avatar entertained way, way more than anything else in 09, and that's what matters, it's ENTERTAINMENT after all, isn't it?
@britoca That's a good point, but they will be talking about Avatar not for its storyline, acting, nor plot, they will solely be talking about its technological breakthrough. Avatar won best cinematography, art direction and visual effects, which was all rightfully earned. Best picture is a whole another question though and there were a couple of movies deserving of that title. James Cameron is a great director though and his movies rock.
@britoca It so was not. The story was in no way unique and had been told so many times that it was abvious to see where the story was going after the first 20 minutes. all this movie did was present a new way to use CGA and was in no way worthy of an award. Movies like Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, The Color Purple and Philadelphia are worthy of awards. At best Avatar deserved an honorable mention.
@blahmehblah1 And why don't you pull your head out of your ass. No way Avatar shold have won Best Picture though I feel the same about Hurt Locker too. James won exactly what he should have won for. Now why not pull the cock out of your mouth and go enjoy a nice tall glass of die in a fire.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@britoca you must kidding. Avatar was a fucking joke... it was pretty, thats all. The Hurt Locker was an amazing film that actualy had a point and was about somthing real that matters. not fucking aliens and stupid crap for children. grow up.
Black Hawk Down was amazing eh? Top Gun was amazing eh? Why? Because Americans invaded other countries! Avatar isn't that good because it says the opposite thing to those so-called "amazing" shitty films eh?
i agree with you it was the BEST PICTURE not the best film it did deserve best picture, best cinematography, best film editing, best sound mixing, best sound, best vissual effects but not best director, best original screenplay and was not an oscar worthy acting film cameron is a vissual artist for the most part hes true original film is the terminator and its sequel
I agree.. Hurt Locker is predictable. Even I know that making a movie is a pain in the ass. I go to Avatar. It is totally unpredictable and hardwork. The Halelujah Mountains are really the bomb!
@britoca That's called comercial movies. The hurt locker, personally, dislikes me. But it have a very good camera crew, and thats have a loft of value for the Oscars. Avatar is a non original argument. Its really like Pocahontas from Disney (it's like a song of the Back Street Boys, you can say "I love you" or "You're my love", but still been the same).
Avatar entertains, but that's all. It's not anything from the other world.
Avatar is nice - plot is nothing special but the technology and universe construction is pretty cool.
However, people that get depressed after they watch Avatar because they want to live in the Avatar universe but can't are pitiful tools that lack their own creativity. It is truly sad that people lead lives that can be upended by the imaginings of another person displayed visually - it really shows how void of imagination some people are and how dependent they are on others' creativity.
I'm sad to see that many do not like James Cameron. Perhaps my view on him is biased because I, myself, am somewhat of a science geek. I'm a movie buff too and love science fiction, so naturally I love most of his work. I thought Avatar was amazing and such a unique cinematic experience.
I haven't seen The Hurt Locker, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. To get that many awards, I'm sure it's a great movie. I will watch it and see if it's truly worthy of Best Picture.
@willrap4f00d Hurt locker was a great movie. A hugely different movie then Avatar. I think a lot of the problem with Avatar was the almost identical war with the indians all they were missing was small pox blankets. Don't get me wrong I LOVED Avatar. Still not Star Wars by ANY means. Not even close. Avatar won't have an impact on our culture like Star Wars did on the world. almost everyone knows that a jedi and lightsaber are. All people do is mock the avatar ppl.
@willrap4f00d They gave it to Hurt Locker out of pity, honestly. Hurt Locker is "solid" work but is NOT the Iraq War film the Academy pretended we've all been waiting for. Avatar is even less great from a critical level but deserved it way more. Avatar should of won ALL the technical awards, including editing (pacing was perfect) sound & sound editing. There's no way Hurt Locker deserved to steal those easy wins away from Avatar, even screenplay- Inglourious Basterds should of scored that one.
@willrap4f00d The Hurt Locker winning simply shows how far the cultural landscape and sensibility has slipped here in America. If it'd been about something other than the current Iraq War, or been directed by a male director, it wouldn't of stood a chance. Avatar's dialogue in areas are quite weak, and sure the story could of used some surprises, but visuals alone doesn't earn 2.7 billion dollars at the box office or resonate with a worldwide audience. Despite it's many flaws, I LOVED Avatar!
He sure catches a lot of shit, but he's made some great movies, made them well, and I respect his passion, which I'm sure is often confused for arrogance.
One of the reasons American's didn't like the "story" was that many Americans are more philosophically aligned with the bad guys in the movie than the good guys, which means a lot of Americans came out of the movie unsure of why there was not a satisfactory ending (for them). As Jujaso points out below, many other countries were more aligned with the "good guys" in the film, so they "get" the story.
@planetdarwin Not gonna lie that's a pretty stupid reason. Most Americans are not in line with the bad guys, from my experience the recent generation is one of the most philanthropic, and environmentally conscious generations ever. Also to say that Americans are in love with war is also pretty stupid, the VAST majority of Americans are opposed to more bloodshed, the people who like war are the people who benefit from it: politicians and the weapons corporations that stuff their pocketbooks
I used to think that same thing, but when you start digging into what people really think about the environment, and resources, and human consumption, and human rights.... you get pretty surprised by what the average American believes. Just as an experiment go around and ask a diverse group of Americans if they would be sad to learn snakes had gone extinct.
All humans are like the humans in Avatar - they just don't realize it and easily blame "damn Americans", etc.
I rooted for RDA during the movie. Seriously, you have one species whose biology is dependent on every other organism on their planet and you have another species whose biology is dependent on just a few other organisms and resource extraction for fighting poverty/ economic growth. Both sides are right, they just need to learn how to trade.
Makes sense. In purely biological senses, it's just a case of survival of the fittest. Still, that you rooted for the antagonist is pretty f'd up, even if they are geneticly superior. LOL
For me, that wasn't the case at all. Personally, I didn't like the story because I found it predictable, and it has been done before. Maybe not set in space, but it wasn't original in any way.
As for my other point, I knew what was going to happen an hour before it happened, which isn't really nice... But that's just my opinion, and if you liked it, good for you. We're free to disagree in anything referring to arts.
EVERYTHING sucked other than the special effects and 3D. which means that the only thing James Cameron was supposed to do in this movie, was shit. So i dont know why everyones sucking his cock over all this.
The conclusion is: Avatar is the Best Movie of the century. 1000 millions of humans said that. 10 Hollywood guys did wrong decision. Anyway only americans like war. The rest of the humans like life. Glory for Avatar!
no-one was wrong. i'm actually very happy with oscar results this year. avatar got an oscars for what it should. the plot is nothing special, everything was in other movies before, only one thing makes this movie special and that are the effects and 3D. if you watch avatar at home, it won't be such big movie for people..
Regarding Digital Domain (6:00+), it is my understanding that the original concept for Digital Domain came from ex-Industrial Light & Magic General Manager Scott Ross, and that it was Ross who wrote the initial business plan. Then, when Cameron heard through the grapevine that Ross was working to launch a new visual effects company, Cameron contacted Ross to suggest that he and Oscar-winner Stan Winston (R.I.P.) join Ross's effort. These 3 went on to become Digital Domain's creative founders.
It is not a movie, It is a special effect annex ego showcase. The characters could not be flatter or they would inverse on itself. The plot lacks every sort of depth. The plot devices are feeble, unimaginative and often insanely flawed. The muppetshow has better scenario's.
Avatar should even not have been nominated in the first place, it is objectively a terrible "movie". ( Which does not mean you can not enjoy it ).
The computer has the best imagination during the whole production. Sad.
HAHAHA! Did you watch the movie? General what's his name was so bad ass. You can try to argue that he wasn't. Because your just going to fall as flat as that dim wit comment you posted. Sad.
Actually, I did. I tend comment and give critique based on such observation and certain knowledge.
Based on you comment it is clear that you do not even know what is meant by a flat or rich character !
Being a bad ass does not bring depth to a charater.
These observable literary concepts I used in my "dim witted" comment are not hard, you could just look them up before you make an arse out of your self.
I'm not going to go in depth with all of the characteristics of the character, but if you take a close look. He has a lot in common with The Hurt Locker dude that everyones so choked up about.
I have not seen the Hurt Locker, but this is irrelevant. Some character resembling some other character also is irrelevant. This has nothing to do with character building in story lines. Resemblances or caricatures are a cheap trick to inject some depth into flat figures. (Avatar!)
I think you are probably incapable of discerning multidimensional story lines and personages. That is why it all seems so flat to you. Does this mirror your own environment ? Flat and mediocre ? Without substance ?
It's not a terrible movie, I would have enjoyed it when I was twelve. It's just not mature enough, but that doesn't make it terrible. It doesn't make it good or brilliant, but not terrible. Beauty is on the eyes of the beholder. I'm not crazy about avatar either, but we've gotta respect people that are into it.
The math says that 230 million resulting in such a shoddy product actually is quite terrible. If you spend the equivalent to the gross national product of a small country and end up with such an unoriginal fabricated piece of trash you can objectively state that you are dealing with an abomination.
As for having to respect ? No I do not. I respect people's right to have insanely stupid ideas, but that is the limit such respect should have.
you're such an edgy intellectual rebel, or at least thats how you'd like the world to see you. instead you just sound pretentious. cheer up though! there will always be some incredibly succesful person for you to resent!
@CommonRaven-I asked you what you consider quality, and you say it's something created not imitated, and you quoted someone? You didn't even answer my question. All you did was cup and paste.
You, Sir, are a hypocrite.
And on my way down to find this comment, all I saw is you getting numerous thumbs down. Seems all you did was argue. Try discussing with someone. It's when you share ideas to widen your own understanding by hearing the views of others. You won't be so disliked then. Try it.
I am really grateful to James Cameron because he has done this so well....even if 1 percent of the people who see the movie think about its meaning that's progress.
I just can't stay awake to see the end. I never manage to watch half way through one of his works without elapsing into a coma.
I think I will not bother to skip to the end of his little talk. Insightful, deep and profound or not, that all seems a bit useless when only utilized to produces brain haemorrhaging pulp.
Cameron is one of the very few filmmakers scientifically literate enough to make hard science fiction. He grew up on Arthur Clarke, Space Odyssey, Robert Heinlein, etc. The golden age of SF. Aliens is much closer to the spirit of Heinlein's Starship Troopers than the actual Starship Troopers movie.
I agree about the characters being flat. The story would be more suited to a miniseries or even a multi season TV series.
There was not enough time to get you to connect with the characters. I think the viewer is so overwhelmed by the graphics, the detail, and the 3D the feeble attempts at character development were lost.
Very motivational.

@britoca
PuoskarinRuoska 1 year ago 4

UofTwannabe 1 year ago 3
@britoca It so was not. The story was in no way unique and had been told so many times that it was abvious to see where the story was going after the first 20 minutes. all this movie did was present a new way to use CGA and was in no way worthy of an award. Movies like Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, The Color Purple and Philadelphia are worthy of awards. At best Avatar deserved an honorable mention.

@britoca That's called comercial movies. The hurt locker, personally, dislikes me. But it have a very good camera crew, and thats have a loft of value for the Oscars.

I will watch it and see if it's truly worthy of Best Picture.
willrap4f00d 1 year ago 34
@willrap4f00d Hurt locker was a great movie. A hugely different movie then Avatar. I think a lot of the problem with Avatar was the almost identical war with the indians all they were missing was small pox blankets. Don't get me wrong I LOVED Avatar. Still not Star Wars by ANY means. Not even close. Avatar won't have an impact on our culture like Star Wars did on the world. almost everyone knows that a jedi and lightsaber are. All people do is mock the avatar ppl.
BaneOfFreeSpeech 1 year ago
@willrap4f00d They gave it to Hurt Locker out of pity, honestly. Hurt Locker is "solid" work but is NOT the Iraq War film the Academy pretended we've all been waiting for. Avatar is even less great from a critical level but deserved it way more. Avatar should of won ALL the technical awards, including editing (pacing was perfect) sound & sound editing. There's no way Hurt Locker deserved to steal those easy wins away from Avatar, even screenplay- Inglourious Basterds should of scored that one.
Cyraside 1 year ago 3
@willrap4f00d The Hurt Locker winning simply shows how far the cultural landscape and sensibility has slipped here in America. If it'd been about something other than the current Iraq War, or been directed by a male director, it wouldn't of stood a chance. Avatar's dialogue in areas are quite weak, and sure the story could of used some surprises, but visuals alone doesn't earn 2.7 billion dollars at the box office or resonate with a worldwide audience. Despite it's many flaws, I LOVED Avatar!

One of the reasons American's didn't like the "story" was that many Americans are more philosophically aligned with the bad guys in the movie than the good guys, which means a lot of Americans came out of the movie unsure of why there was not a satisfactory ending (for them). As Jujaso points out below, many other countries were more aligned with the "good guys" in the film, so they "get" the story.
planetdarwin 1 year ago
@planetdarwin Not gonna lie that's a pretty stupid reason. Most Americans are not in line with the bad guys, from my experience the recent generation is one of the most philanthropic, and environmentally conscious generations ever. Also to say that Americans are in love with war is also pretty stupid, the VAST majority of Americans are opposed to more bloodshed, the people who like war are the people who benefit from it: politicians and the weapons corporations that stuff their pocketbooks
jtom2343 1 year ago
@jtom2343
I used to think that same thing, but when you start digging into what people really think about the environment, and resources, and human consumption, and human rights.... you get pretty surprised by what the average American believes. Just as an experiment go around and ask a diverse group of Americans if they would be sad to learn snakes had gone extinct.
planetdarwin 1 year ago
All humans are like the humans in Avatar - they just don't realize it and easily blame "damn Americans", etc.
I rooted for RDA during the movie. Seriously, you have one species whose biology is dependent on every other organism on their planet and you have another species whose biology is dependent on just a few other organisms and resource extraction for fighting poverty/ economic growth. Both sides are right, they just need to learn how to trade.
MadPutz 1 year ago 3
Makes sense. In purely biological senses, it's just a case of survival of the fittest. Still, that you rooted for the antagonist is pretty f'd up, even if they are geneticly superior. LOL
matudeca 1 year ago
For me, that wasn't the case at all. Personally, I didn't like the story because I found it predictable, and it has been done before. Maybe not set in space, but it wasn't original in any way.
As for my other point, I knew what was going to happen an hour before it happened, which isn't really nice... But that's just my opinion, and if you liked it, good for you. We're free to disagree in anything referring to arts.

Sad.

Actually, I did. I tend comment and give critique based on such observation and certain knowledge.
Based on you comment it is clear that you do not even know what is meant by a flat or rich character !
Being a bad ass does not bring depth to a charater.
These observable literary concepts I used in my "dim witted" comment are not hard, you could just look them up before you make an arse out of your self.
retepvosnul 1 year ago
@retepvosnul
I'm not going to go in depth with all of the characteristics of the character, but if you take a close look. He has a lot in common with The Hurt Locker dude that everyones so choked up about.
GrimSoul66 1 year ago
I have not seen the Hurt Locker, but this is irrelevant. Some character resembling some other character also is irrelevant. This has nothing to do with character building in story lines. Resemblances or caricatures are a cheap trick to inject some depth into flat figures. (Avatar!)
I think you are probably incapable of discerning multidimensional story lines and personages. That is why it all seems so flat to you. Does this mirror your own environment ? Flat and mediocre ? Without substance ?
retepvosnul 1 year ago
It's not a terrible movie, I would have enjoyed it when I was twelve. It's just not mature enough, but that doesn't make it terrible. It doesn't make it good or brilliant, but not terrible. Beauty is on the eyes of the beholder. I'm not crazy about avatar either, but we've gotta respect people that are into it.
matudeca 1 year ago
The math says that 230 million resulting in such a shoddy product actually is quite terrible. If you spend the equivalent to the gross national product of a small country and end up with such an unoriginal fabricated piece of trash you can objectively state that you are dealing with an abomination.
As for having to respect ? No I do not. I respect people's right to have insanely stupid ideas, but that is the limit such respect should have.
