I believe the Munich branch that Hitler attended started the numbering on their membership cards at 500 to make it look like there were more members than there actually were in Bavaria. Hitler's membership number was 555. It shouldn't be too hard to find; it's in W L Shirer's 'The Rise & Fall of the Third Reich' for example. Hitler deliberately chose a small organisation so that he could dominate it. Read Shirer; he was a correspondant stationed in Berlin during Hitler's rise.

One thing I have noticed about Hitler in my time at school, both secondary and university is that the intelligent people (people in my grade range which was one person or less in every class) admire Hitler while the ignorant buffoons would scream out any time discussion about world war two came about. Usually saying stuff like Hitler was mean! He was a psycho! When I explain to them Hitler's position and life, they sit there and do what you just did, ignore what I said and repeat themselves.
