The 'sword' you're talking about... was that the jungle-cutting machete from the Tesca campaign? I suspect plain blades aren't that effective against carapaced insectiod/arachnid opponents? That's the only reason I can figure, at least.

I suspect the toughness of their enemy's 'hides' is also why they don't use shotguns- I'd wager the ball bearings wouldn't be able to penetrate and do as much damage as a dedicated armor piercing 'pulse rifle' round.

I think 33 is among the episodes that were never finished. In their place were made 41-44, which are apparently clipshows. Sony apparently made a deal for 40 episodes, but only 37 full episodes were finished... I think the story's in the wiki article for the series.

It's supposed to be a 40 episode series. Pay attention to the numbering on the Series info page- you'll see that four episode numbers are skipped, but the last episode is numbered as 44. The four missing episodes were never finished, and the four after 40 are clipshows, I believe.
