I think this has to be one of the most romantic songs ever written. Very open. Very vulnerable. Just perfect. Man, back in the day, I had SUCH a crush on Lou Barlow. :)
@tristianity4u i've been looking for the acoustic version as i had it years ago on my old pc but cannot seem to find it anywhere! The one i had was on a radio show where he apologises as his voice is "shot"
Lou Barlow actually wrote this song for his wife (or girlfriend?) at the time because she had left him for his attorney! After hearing this song, she went back to Lou!
@Newlantan I thought it was something like they had broken up and he still loved her even though she ended up being engaged to someone else. And he did "win" her back, but his attorney?! :/
This song popped into my head while at work and I couldn't get it out of my head. I came home and searched for it on youtube and hoped there was a video and I got to see this one. Holy shit what a video! Damn, now I'm not going to be able to stop watching the video! Hahahaha
Totally screwed up, but, I know what this song is going to do to me(it's one of the best) and yet I have to heat it once, twice or 34 times. Fuck , I love this song
This was probably my favorite song off Harmacy and I never knew this video existed until a few weeks ago when I saw Lou Barlow play this song live. He explained that the video is why he still doesn't make any royalties from the record. Now I can see why. Looks pretty fancy by indie rock standards. Lots of actors, extras, locations... and special effects, too! Way to go, Sebadoh!
i found out bout this song nearly a year ago when my ex-fiance benjamin asked me to listen to this...it made me cry i know...and when i listen to it from time to time?i still do cry...
great post, this cd should have been huge in the late 90's i remember buying it in high school and only listening to the single, i did not hear this song till about 6 months ago
This song, Rebound, and Together or Alone and some of the best songs... Honestly, i can listen to Bakesale from start to finish without skipping a song. very rare a band can release a CD that makes one not skip a single song.
I've seen seBADoh twice, and had the pleasure to meet the band both times. I remember telling Jason how well "Not too amused" captured my coming of age years, how it embodied how I felt at the end of my first relationship. 12 years later, I forgot to mention that this was my wedding song. :) seBADoh, how you've chronicled my life with your beautiful narrative.
Harmacy, wow... When you are coming to age, and you listen to this kind of bands... You know life is good, very good to you... Thanks for posting this, lovely...
There's an extraordinary version of this song that they did Live called "Beautiful Friend" (KCRW- Rare on Air performances) which oudoes this album version. I met Sebadoh in L.A. at an in store Tower Records performance and was wowed. Truly under appreciated band.
Better under appreciated than over appreciated. Just how appreciated do favorite bands need to be before they stop being called "under appreciated"? Sebadoh are appreciated by folks who appreciated them. Why isn't that enough?
If someone is too underappreciated, they are not making a lot of money. Sebadoh probably is doing decent at least though.
To make for fair comment, I do not try to discriminate for only liking mainstream vs. non-mainstream because I think there are good bands within both categories.
Yep. Sebadoh are doing fine financially - certainly able to make a good living writing and playing music with no other side jobs and no overwhelming debt. Lou Barlow I would guess could even be considered RICH considering the long-term profits accumulated as a member and song-writer of Dinosaur Jr. Of course that term is relative.....
Sorry about that comment I made a couple of days ago pooh poohing your use of under appreciated. Your comment rings true- I just had a stick up my butt that day. Thanks for helping me realize that I need to be more careful about being an ass when making comments.
hey guys, um, this is hard to say but does anyone kno of a song that a person falls in love with their best friend but she doesnt like u back like that
woww i'm surprised that is a big budget vid for Sebadoh..! their rec company from back then seemed like wanting to give a shot at making them the new REM or whatever.. not a bad thing actually.. its a shame that only few of great indie bands r getting to promote their music on the big media really
I think u might be exactly right, that was maybe their shot to become the new REM... funny though that I didnt see this video on TV, never, not a single time *LOL* ok, I live in germany, but still..
Lou Barlow is an asset to music. Just a great body of work. This song is just pure genious. Simple, beautiful and effective. For a different side of Lou, check out "Natural One" by Folk Implosion.
One of my favorite songs, makes me wanna cry. So pure and from the heart. Music today is scared to be simplistic and talk about love, the one thing we all want and have in common.
I love Dinosaur and Sebadoh. But Lou has a slight edge in songwriting. They're both great. if I had to choose I would pick Sebadoh.
