I think that Rattmann took an elevator from the collapsing Aperture to the saltmines of old Aperture to hide. He couldn't walk any further (see comic). He used the Borealis to teleport himself away. It makes sence, right? Any other theories?

@easynaming It's from Episode Two. It's true significance is not yet known; it's one of many mysteries we hope to be explained by Half-Life 3 (and one of many reasons why we're so damned impatient for it!).

From what's been hinted, it's a ship that carried a giant, highly advanced version of the portal technology tested by the player in the Portal games. One day the portal misfired, or fired accidentally, and the ship vanished, with all hands & allegedly part of the dry dock with it

The Combine want it to re-establish a link to their homeworld and bring in reinforcements, and humanity wants it just because it's a goddamned giant and highly advanced portal gun. However the G-Man hinted to Gordon and to Eli that use of the tech would result in "unforeseen consequences." The last time he said that was right before Black Mesa.

The Vortigaunts are an alien race from a different dimension who were only introduced to Earth after the events of Half-Life. They're not experiments. The old recording of the "mantis men" would place it somewhere during the early 60's, long before anything happened in Black Mesa or the Combine.

Knowing Aperture, these "mantis men" are just some insane drug addicts in green jumpsuits "working" as living test dummies.

I think the "teleporting boat" idea came from the Philadelphia experiment, which was an experiment that supposedly happened in 1943 to try to make a Cannon-class battleship called the USS Eldridge invisible using extreme magnetic forces. This supposedly either caused the boat to teleport 200 miles from it's dock in Philadelphia to (of all places) the Norfolk Naval Base (conveniently landing in water, too) or it achieved time travel 10 seconds into the past.

for anyone interested in the timeline of Half Life and Portal, and also a more indepth look into the story than what you get from just playing the game. It was put together using information from all of the games, and Gary McTaggart from Valve has said that it is "pretty darn accurate for the most part". Unfortunately it hasn't been updated to include Portal 2.

Correct, the (first) portal game started as an independent mod for an half life game, but Valve picked up the mod and helped create a complete game out of it.

Reading more comments,some people think Protal 3 is impossible story-wise.But if Valve wanted to make a Portal 3,here's how it might go.It might sound a bit canon:

Chell is free.She brings imprisonment and murder charges against Aperture Science.Aperture does something to bribe to justice system and switches the case right back at Chell,pressing charges for destruction of property.To pay off the fines put upon Chell,she gets a job at Black Mesa.FOURTH PERSPECTIVE HL1 STORY.

We don't really know the timeline of Portal 2, so it could be many years in the future. We don't even know how she got put in stasis, although it's implied in the PC version that the Rat Man put her in it to save her.

Half Life universe has aliens, but they aren't everywhere. There are scenes in Half Life 2 and Episode 2 where you are in the middle of lush forests. Not everywhere has to look invaded...

Long story short, their experiment went wrong and the ship disappeared and re-appeared on a random location on earth's surface. I guess. :B

think the borealis had some kind of condemned time portal technology. The ship completely vanished from the world for a long time then suddenly appears in the arctic MANY years later. And during one of the tests CJ mentions something about the possibility of seeing yourself during a test due to time travel. I'm thinking gordon will get this tech and go back to the source of the resonance cascade and try to stop himself before pushing the xen crystal into the resonator and gman captures him again

About the vanishing: Douglas Rattmann, a survivor of GLaDos attacking the facilities, is a time traveler that made all of those dens with paintings and writings. He did all of that to help Chell with defeating GLaDoS. Now, what if Douglas had gone into the condemned part of Aperture Science and done something with the Borealis, as you had said to somehow defeat GLaDoS... Couldn't it be possible?
