Lol... do you guys think... maybe, if Borealis isn't destroyed yet.. and in Episode 3 when Gordon and Alyx destory it, they'll meet the Aperture Science Enrichment Team? With Chell, GlaDos and etc.??
I think that Rattmann took an elevator from the collapsing Aperture to the saltmines of old Aperture to hide. He couldn't walk any further (see comic). He used the Borealis to teleport himself away. It makes sence, right? Any other theories?
@easynaming It's from Episode Two. It's true significance is not yet known; it's one of many mysteries we hope to be explained by Half-Life 3 (and one of many reasons why we're so damned impatient for it!).
From what's been hinted, it's a ship that carried a giant, highly advanced version of the portal technology tested by the player in the Portal games. One day the portal misfired, or fired accidentally, and the ship vanished, with all hands & allegedly part of the dry dock with it
@Firestorm2154 thank you good sir... although one thing... YOU COULD HAVE SAID SPOILER ALERT. but i alledgedly thank you for the time taking to explain the phenomenon of the significance.
@easynaming The technology is powerful enough that it's become a major point of interest in humanity's war with the Combine, by both sides. The Combine want it to re-establish a link to their homeworld and bring in reinforcements, and humanity wants it just because it's a goddamned giant and highly advanced portal gun. However the G-Man hinted to Gordon and to Eli that use of the tech would result in "unforeseen consequences." The last time he said that was right before Black Mesa.
The Vortigaunts are an alien race from a different dimension who were only introduced to Earth after the events of Half-Life. They're not experiments. The old recording of the "mantis men" would place it somewhere during the early 60's, long before anything happened in Black Mesa or the Combine.
Knowing Aperture, these "mantis men" are just some insane drug addicts in green jumpsuits "working" as living test dummies.
ok, sorry to seem stupid but is the borealis a ship from half-life? i only ask because i havent played half-life yet, also why are there so many parts where something from half-life is hinted at? like in the end song of portal 1, still alive, when glados mentions black mesa?
I think the "teleporting boat" idea came from the Philadelphia experiment, which was an experiment that supposedly happened in 1943 to try to make a Cannon-class battleship called the USS Eldridge invisible using extreme magnetic forces. This supposedly either caused the boat to teleport 200 miles from it's dock in Philadelphia to (of all places) the Norfolk Naval Base (conveniently landing in water, too) or it achieved time travel 10 seconds into the past.
for anyone interested in the timeline of Half Life and Portal, and also a more indepth look into the story than what you get from just playing the game. It was put together using information from all of the games, and Gary McTaggart from Valve has said that it is "pretty darn accurate for the most part". Unfortunately it hasn't been updated to include Portal 2.
"From what we have seen from Portal and the previous Episodes the Borealis is a scientific ship that was involved in teleportation tests at the Aperture Science labs. "
@ThePerkMenStrats Actually based on the level of decay, and the timer from the stasis pod, It's been about 20-30 years after Half life 1, which is is around Episode 2 time
@DaemonBomb from all i understand of the .... what is this gaming universe called now? the black mesa universe? ... if i understand (and dont shoot me down just working on estimates) the black mesa incident was based around the time the game was released mid 90's as best i can actually tell so far portal 1 happened before then and a further guess is the 80's when glados went a bit mental and who wouldn't ripped outta her body and put in a machine against her will. indeed i have to agree 20-30
Correct, the (first) portal game started as an independent mod for an half life game, but Valve picked up the mod and helped create a complete game out of it.
@cadavernl Portal did not start as a Half-Life mod, it was originally Narbacular Drop. Valve hired the people making it, and it eventually became Portal. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY HALF-LIFE MOD.
Reading more comments, some people think Protal 3 is impossible story-wise.But if Valve wanted to make a Portal 3,here's how it might go.It might sound a bit canon:
Chell is free. She brings imprisonment and murder charges against Aperture Science.Aperture does something to bribe to justice system and switches the case right back at Chell, pressing charges for destruction of property. To pay off the fines put upon Chell, she gets a job at Black Mesa.FOURTH PERSPECTIVE HL1 STORY.
@FlingleBingle By the time of Portal 2 there is no justice system to go to, unless you mean our lovely benefactors. Who knows what's out there in those forests. Chell would be lucky to get to Detroit alive, she could be killed by Xen creatures or Combine forces patrolling the forests.
I wonder how the fuck could that ship get in there, at 13221432 km underground, cause the only thing you make the whole game is FALL FALL FALL and FALL
You know what would be fricken awesome? If portal 3 and half life 2: episode 3 were the same game. And based on this and the fact that it seems like valve can't really expand on portal's story with how they ended it, it seems like that's a possible idea
i bet that the borealis's portal technology is based on harnessing the energy of the aurora, since the borealis was teleported to the arctic and maybe the ship's name is its purpose.
Don't you think it's all rather convinient? All those other chambers hive you a Cave Johnson speech when you press [console action key here]. but the borealis chamber is busted... Damn you valve and your cliffhangers.
heads up there is no episode 3 valve have moved away from episodic gaming. could mean hl3 and considering the time since e2...(this doesn't entail a source engine 2, there sticking with updating the current engine)
i think that they had a smaller or at least anouther version of GLaDOS on it she or it like the original GLaDOS probibly became to powerful killed everyone on board and then waited for someone to find the ship or maybe it lost power was caught in a drift and got frozen in the artic and wasnt found till mossman and her crew went searching for it thats just my therory (sorry for bad spelling)
at the end of portal 2 u leave the building completely fine and the world seems fine aswell then how come the borealis and black mesa and shit like that is in the same game ( world / time ) because if chell left woudnt the world be under attack by giant aliens ( i havnt played half life but i kno alot from it ) so tell me guys if u kno anything and i kno about the borealis and stuff in halflife but its just so weird that glados dosnt kno anything about it
@ledgendaryk and coz of that bit at the start of u sleeping for couple of hundred years the time might be somwhat in the future but that dosnt change that way the earth will look though will it?
@ledgendaryk Well, it would be last place to go looking for a secret underground complex.
We don't really know the timeline of Portal 2, so it could be many years in the future. We don't even know how she got put in stasis, although it's implied in the PC version that the Rat Man put her in it to save her.
Half Life universe has aliens, but they aren't everywhere. There are scenes in Half Life 2 and Episode 2 where you are in the middle of lush forests. Not everywhere has to look invaded...
@davidgota theres comics about rat man ... he did save her but i kno what ur getting at but chell proberly dead if theres aliens about and shes in the midle of a huge ass corn field XD
What I don't get is why the hell the Borealis' dry dock is at THE BOTTOM of Aperture Laboratories. Okay, it was involved in teleportation tests, but still... Aperture Laboratories is HUGE. It goes down for miles and miles...
@XKarateKatX the door that you enter through to reach the dock suggests that it can be sealed and the entire room can be filled with water thus allowing a more room for a bigger ship
@EmperorOfMars They apperantly equipped the ship with an experimental portal device hence the ship "disappeared" from the docking station due to their haste in beating Black Mesa's progress on portal technology. Long story short, their experiment went wrong and the ship disappeared and re-appeared on a random location on earth's surface. I guess. :B
Up until now I've heard THREE hundred years, not seven hundred three hundred years of neglect is pushing the believability, seven hundred is basically beyond impossible. That much time with zero maintenance on that facility, there literally wouldn't be anything left, save for crumbling concrete and piles of rust. I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if Valve ret-cons the "whole distant future" setting of Portal 2 the same way they ret-conned the ending of the first Portal.
@TheMadmanAndre judging by thee number of nines, chell has slept for 2737.8480492813141683778234086242 years, but that is highly unlikely due to the low maintenance, but it is hinted that there's more than the two, GLaDOS and Wheatly so...
Seven hundred years I can't really buy.
@Provocativeification wait 700 year's!? that's how long chell was asleep!? i thought this was the same timeline! you know...a few year's after the 7 hour war?
Well we have portal, half life, half life 2 with 2 new episodes, team fortress, portal 2, team fortress 2, a soon to be half life 3 or 2 episode 3, I think we may be having a team fortress 3 soon
A Ice Braker being built in the deep dark undergroud by crazy scintist. that then disapears for years and, poorly hidden becuse Kliener knows what it is wtf
think the borealis had some kind of condemned time portal technology. The ship completely vanished from the world for a long time then suddenly appears in the arctic MANY years later. And during one of the tests CJ mentions something about the possibility of seeing yourself during a test due to time travel. I'm thinking gordon will get this tech and go back to the source of the resonance cascade and try to stop himself before pushing the xen crystal into the resonator and gman captures him again
G-Man is Gordon in a future time.G-Man learns time travel and how to interact with his former self without causing a time paradox.G-Man's future is not as good as he wished it would be,so he goes back in time to become a CEO or other related job at Black Mesa.
What do you think of that? It's actually about 3:30 in the morning so I can't create anything awesome.
@FlingleBingle Well one thing om Opposing Force actually helped convince me, nothing big really but its something. Its when Gman tells Adrian that he remind him of himself.
@oobietime8 So maybe G-man is the future self of Adrian then?Or maybe G-man just saw a connection between Adrian and Gordon?Like same styles, same attitudes(if they could speak),etc?
About the vanishing: Douglas Rattmann, a survivor of GLaDos attacking the facilities, is a time traveler that made all of those dens with paintings and writings. He did all of that to help Chell with defeating GLaDoS. Now, what if Douglas had gone into the condemned part of Aperture Science and done something with the Borealis, as you had said to somehow defeat GLaDoS... Couldn't it be possible?
@Acellio Imn my mind I believed that he would find an APHHPD on the Borealis and use it as one of the weapons. LIke Vavlve would make an extension from the POrtal universe into the Half-life universe.
@Acellio something about time travel sounds quite good, i guess the "gate" that the borealis opens for freeman is probably the beginning of the new hl3 universe after the episode arc
@Acellio This is one of the best theories I've heard as of yet. Valve has mentioned Chell is supposed to be very important in Ep. 3, though, so how do you think she is involved in it, other than finding the ship?
when episode 3 comes out, and you find the borealis, valve should put in a secret door that leads to a small part of the aperture science enrichment center :) and should make an achievement called: Experiment Failed
Valve please release Half Life 2 Episode 3 before i die.

TheMadmanAndre 9 months ago
@TheMadmanAndre judging by thee number of nines, chell has slept for 2737.8480492813141683778234086242 years, but that is highly unlikely due to the low maintenance, but it is hinted that there's more than the two, GLaDOS and Wheatly so...

Seven hundred years I can't really buy. That much time with zero maintenance on that facility, there literally wouldn't be anything left, save for crumbling concrete and piles of rust. @Provocativeification wait 700 year's!? that's how long chell was asleep!? i thought this was the same timeline! you know...a few year's after the 7 hour war?

A Ice Braker being built in the deep dark undergroud by crazy scintist. that then disapears for years and, poorly hidden becuse Kliener knows what it is wtf
headshotpoductions 9 months ago
think the borealis had some kind of condemned time portal technology.
Acellio 9 months ago 79
@Acellio But wouldn't that create a temporal paradox and kill the present Gordon?
DCSlolz 9 months ago
@Acellio This gives me more ideas now I know lots about the combine and stuff.
TheJefrey24 9 months ago
@Acellio what about that whole gman is gordon theory? I don't believe it, but it could open up more possibilites.
oobietime8 9 months ago
@oobietime8 Theory.
FlingleBingle 8 months ago
@FlingleBingle Well one thing om Opposing Force actually helped convince me, nothing big really but its something. Its when Gman tells Adrian that he remind him of himself.
oobietime8 8 months ago
@oobietime8 So maybe G-man is the future self of Adrian then?Or maybe G-man just saw a connection between Adrian and Gordon?Like same styles, same attitudes(if they could speak),etc?
FlingleBingle 8 months ago
@Acellio
TheBloo4 9 months ago
@Acellio a battle verses gman would infold..... you need to work on valve's development team
XIspartaAFK 8 months ago
@Acellio
That would cause a paradox, and blow your mind.
codystafford 8 months ago
@Acellio Imn my mind I believed that he would find an APHHPD on the Borealis and use it as one of the weapons. LIke Vavlve would make an extension from the POrtal universe into the Half-life universe.
DrunkenDriverStudios 8 months ago
@DrunkenDriverStudios It's ASHPD and Valve not Vavlve (it's fun to say though XP)
CooldudeStudios 8 months ago
@CooldudeStudios lol you're right on that one :D
DrunkenDriverStudios 8 months ago
@DrunkenDriverStudios
Fact: Vavlve is pronounced like VA-vul-veh
CooldudeStudios 8 months ago
@Acellio something about time travel sounds quite good, i guess the "gate" that the borealis opens for freeman is probably the beginning of the new hl3 universe after the episode arc
Tobi4444 8 months ago
@Acellio This is one of the best theories I've heard as of yet. Valve has mentioned Chell is supposed to be very important in Ep. 3, though, so how do you think she is involved in it, other than finding the ship?
pseudocaveman 8 months ago
Was the Borealis that random abndond ship in Half-Life 2: episode 2?

when episode 3 comes out, and you find the borealis, valve should put in a secret door that leads to a small part of the aperture science enrichment center :) and should make an achievement called: Experiment Failed
