I have seen many of your videos like this that use a reed switch for turning to coil off and on, what kind of life do you get out of the reed switches? i cant imagine they last very long as they are switching several hundred times a second when you run these motors at high speed.
The pulse is directly connected to the speed of the rotor through the reed switch attached to the connection block. When the rotor spins it turns the coil on and off.
I have no way of measuring the speed other that the pulses on the Neon. I think so, it has made it more stable and use less power though. I think that the mass of the magnets helped as it takes longer to spin down when I disconnect.
I was considering building one of these myself, I did consider getting a bicycle odometer that uses magnets to advance it. I was also thinking is it more advantagous to make it bigger using multiple magnets verses buying some really strong magnets. Thanks for your reply
Thats a good idea using a bike odometer, if I used it on mine I would have to divide by four (four magnets) I think that the diameter of my spindle may be too small though.
Check out ebay for the magnets my big ones were £5 each and can pull 55kg each.

Its a connection block with a reed switch attached to it.
A Reed Switch is a magnetic switch. The one I am using is normally open and closes when a magnet passes it.

How you conet the coil, conect it to a pulse circuit?
