  • wooooow, this is brilliant! what media did you use?

  • Awesome

  • simply amazing...

  • I love you, QualiaSoup! I loooove your videos and now i loooove your painting! You and your brother keep up the great work !!!! =) Much love from Cali

  • This is amazing, too bad you disabled the ratings :(

  • Wow, Qualiasoup this is really marvelous! all the intermediate stages are their own works of art, it is beauty in 4D. some of the more impressionist looking stages are my favorites, and i am glad that feeling remained in the final image. (...though, i suppose this video is the final product isn't it? not merely the last slide.)

  • aha! So you too are brothers, I didn't know if it was the same guy or just wth.

You're both great, and this was just unexpectedly excelent.

  • this is one of the sickest videos i seen on youtube.. wow.

  • I'm not sure why you've disabled ratings on this, but your painting is magnificent.

  • amazing! I love ALL his videos and this wonderful piece of art too!

  • WONDERFUL! :D

  • amazing work dude

  • Are you doing sit ups in that painting?

  • awesome

  • lol looks like a penis at 1st LOL XD

  • I just came by your channel to see if there were some past videos of yours that I had missed. Finding this is a real treat. Self portraits are so often my favorite pieces in an artist's collection. I guess because of the editorial, self-refelction. This one, I feel like I could write a paper on. :0)

  • Having watched some of your other videos, I decided to see your earliest one. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was about painting. Nice work and interesting to watch it progress. and you did the music. wow.

Talk about putting yourself out there for critiquing.

It must be MY mind and how it works but when you first started the painting, all I saw was phallic and yonnic symbols. Or, it could be your subconscious I saw. :P

  • Very Cool! What a wonderful piece of art...Im a recent subscriber and thus far I have enjoyed everyone of your videos...Great Job....!!!!!

  • Wow, that's so cool!!! :)

  • Nice work QS. An interesting and creative choice on the positioning of your figure. Do you have any more of your work available to see on line?

  • Very awesome QS.

I love the colors you used! Wonderful texture and great shading :)

You should definately upload another speed paint!:)

  • fantastic

  • Excellent work, Doug! 5* even though they are disabled. I'm so envious that you can paint, and then provide your own background music too!!

    More please! :-)

  • Thanks, Rob! I'd sort of given up on the idea of doing another one, but now you mention it, it might be fun to crowbar a speed painting into another video. You've got me wondering... ;^>

  • Yes, mate. Please do more of this. It's just wonderful viewing. Speed painting is fascinating - to watch the brain at work, building on choice after choice is a beautiful thing to behold.

(taps fingers) I hope you do another soon.

    :o)

  • The question I've always wondered when seeing artists at work is this: How do you know when to stop?

  • The answer is that it never is, but once you have torn yourself away from it, you look at it again with fresh eyes and wish you'd done something differently! :-)

  • When its finished

  • When you can't stand to work on it anymore!lol Honestly, because two days or a week later you'll look at what you completed and see more flaws.

No matter how perfect the picture is --- it's the artist's complex. :)

  • great talent mate

  • Thank you for sharing :)

  • I more than half expected the figure to open its eyes and stare at me by the end :-)

The whole sequence reminds me of some of the short films Will Vinton used to put together in the '80s, only better.

  • Fantastic!

  • Maybe you can expand your channel to include a "How to draw..." series

  • As an illustrator, cartoonist and artist I must say your skill with paint is commendable. What sort of process do you go by in painting? It doesn't look like the envelope, but then you never know.

Either way, excellent videos and I applaud your willingness to post something this personal, considering the varied nature of your audience.

  • That's very kind, BluegrassAtheist. Thank you. It's funny. Now you ask me, I can't really say I have a process. With figurative paintings, I lay down a structure, then instinctively add what colour / texture I feel is needed. I let more abstract work grow almost completely organically.

My channel was originally going to be devoted to art and music, but when my brother (TheraminTrees) started getting hatemail for being an atheist, it seemed there were more urgent subjects to explore...(!) ;^>

  • That was an amazing video, and you're a hell of a painter :)

  • Wow! I'm already a big fan of your vids but I hadn't seen this yet. Fantastic work, man. Amazing! Your feel for light is wonderful. Very... very impressive.

    Bravo!

    :o)

I love watching the brain work.

  • Many thanks for this video (and all the others). As someone almost entirely innocent of the visual arts, it was utterly fascinating to see an original work in the process of realisation.

  • Thank *you*, Slabbers. I really appreciate that. And welcome to the channel.

  • I've just finished watching all of your videos in one extended sitting. Keep up the great work, so many people try to explain these ideas without every putting them in ways that the majority can understand.

I'll look forward to any future videos you release for certain and I wish you the best of luck and health.

  • That means a lot, Amiculi. Thanks very much indeed. I hope you had enough popcorn for the extended sitting(!) ;^>

  • I love this video :) thanks for sharing.

  • I am not worthy to comment oh lord! Please forgive me! It was dragged out of me by the vileness in my soul.

(all the backhanded complements I considered were unholy). IMMHO, the wood comment wins the internet. Now I'm off to see the others, the wonderful, wonderful others. Weeeeeeeee.

  • Great video!! I only wish I had the patience to do art. Stumbledupon your Open-mindedness video, and began watching many of the others, as you can see. Great Channel! It's good to see someone out there educating and making valid points instead of shouting, cursing, while blaspheming; which does not prove a thing. Your style is great, and your videos are wise, I hope to be able to view them all soon.

  • Thanks very much, Tomato245. Your compliments mean a lot.

  • Gorgeous.

  • Thanks, PunkCabaret! ;^>

  • Do you like Klimt?

  • Klimt isn't someone who springs to mind as a favourite, Warpdarkmatter, but I do love much of his sumptuous work.

  • Absolutely stunning!

  • Nice painting!

  • Crikey. That, ladies and gentlemen, is talent.

  • Thanks, ImposingSumo, and welcome to the channel.

  • Simply wonderfull.

  • Cheers, Chstoney!

  • Superb, kudos to you sir. I have never seen such a marriage of free thinking, reason and artistic excellence.

  • Very kind of you, Omega. Thanks very much. ;^>

  • A great arist and a great thinker, i extend my honest respect.

  • Many thanks Alex. Most appreciated!

  • Very nice. I was nice to see all of the steps to the finished result and the level of detail keep growing.

As a non-painter, I am curious, when you covered the background in black, was that because you changed your mind or do the layers under the black add something to the physical painting that I can not see on the screen?

I have heard that you can get affects from layering oils, but am not sure if this is an example of that process.

Thanks again for a great video.

  • Thank *you*, iarroganti. Your compliment's much appreciated.

There was a translucency to the black which doesn't show up on screen, but allowed some of the texture and colour beneath to show through. I find that painting on near-black makes colours 'glow'. They can be deadened on pure white. The build-up of different layers is important. For example there are greens, blues, violets and yellows in skin tones, which really help to build the realism and 3-dimensionality of painted flesh.

  • Just watched several of your videos and have told my friends about your channel. I am most impressed by the content! I am lucky to have several friends for whom your insights will only reinforce what they already know. I only wish I was able to make my points so eloquently as what you do ;-)

Now it seems you can paint too! Is there no end to your talents QualiaSoup?

  • "so eloquently as what you do"

    Lol!

What a great message to come home to, Zinadean. Thanks very much. And nice to hear that my videos will only reinforce what your friends already know.

    Welcome to the channel. ;^>

  • Full of Wonder! Bravo!

  • that's beautiful!

  • nice!

  • Thanks!

  • For a bit there, I was half-convinced you were going to turn out to be sitting on a toilet. Heh.

  • Lol! That's certainly a take no one else has come up with so far...(!)

  • Aw, I'm just irreverent by nature, is all. :)

  • I love this painting! For some reason, the fact that your eyes are closed makes it seem a lot more personal/vulnerable, though it seems like it should be the other way around. I'd love to see more of your work!

  • What an enjoyable video! Watching it is a little mind puzzle, tracing 2D shapes as they turn into a 3D figure and perspective and watching the surface textures evolve. You've chosen a great pose for your self-portrait--it provokes thought, asking the viewer to explore the dimensionality of the picture rather than to see a stereotypical figure. Much like your other videos, it is a strong statement of a mind that examines its subject carefully. Great composition, too. :)

  • Thanks very much indeed for your thoughtful compliments, Laraesque. I've rarely been so delighted by a comment as I have by yours, especially the 'strong statement' remark, which meant a lot to me. Most appreciated, my friend. ;^>

  • That was amazing! You should post some more of this stuff if you ever get the chance. I'd love to see more of your work.

  • Thats definitely photoshopped. Yeah, the reflections are all wrong.

    J/K

    Thats cool.

  • Woah! That makes me wish I could draw!

  • wow just wow.

  • Cheers, JT. ;^>

  • Excellent videos and now an excellent self portrait. I just wonder why you're naked...

    Good job!

  • Thanks! Much appreciated.

I could actually be wearing clothes in the painting (vest and shorts etc.) All you can see is legs and arms and head. Some people have told me they think they see more, but it's all just legs and arms and head. ;^>

  • I suppose you could, as you are correct, only knees are seen. Thank the flying spaghetti monster for that!

  • Brilliant. 10/5

  • You're an amazing artist, hon. :) I'd love to see more of your artwork.

  • Thanks very much, Winwin! ;^>

I may do another time-lapse video later in the year...

  • sincerely, that was amazing. thanks for posting.

  • Thanks very much, Tictocfilms! I really appreciate your compliment. ;^>

  • Wow! Impressive stuff. Too many good YT atheist artists for me to compete. I guess I will go back to making math videos maybe. :)

  • Thanks very much, Paul! Incidentally, I loved your speed drawing of Pdoeman. You really captured him wonderfully. ;^>

  • I'm so thoroughly impressed with your artistic talent!!! It was already amazing half way through! Watching this project develop is so enjoyable!

  • Thanks, Emtrue! That really means a lot to me.

When I took the 9 original photographs I had no thoughts of using them to produce an animation showing the development of the painting. It was a fun process. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

  • Where can I get the music?

  • The music's one of my own compositions. Not available commercially - it has a current CD circulation of 3 close friends and family. Lol! - but I'm very glad you liked it.

  • I'm impressed how you had no fear to paint over the parts that already looked 'done', and every time it became sharper and clearer. A loverly result, brave one!

  • Thanks very much, Farvision, and welcome to the channel!

He he, the false starts can be frustrating(!) but the discomfort of starting again comes to feel much less than the discomfort of having that little niggling patch I know I never got quite right... ;^>

  • thanks to thinkmorepink for the shoutout - I somehow managed not to subscribe a previous time!

  • And how! Thnkmorepink has been so wonderful, and I was blown away to see her shout out for my channel. She's such a bright, generous presence on YouTube.

  • Thanks for sharing the entire development of this work. Insert many expletives here in description of your impressive painting. My reaction to the pose was somewhat similar to BC2's, except the position, to me, is reminiscent of a body being in stocks. Your self portrait, then, becomes a way of putting yourself on public display as a method of punishment.

  • Thanks, Snowfeet! And your perceptive comments are spot on. I usually shy away from explaining my work, because it's so interesting for me to hear what others see, but your last sentence expresses what I intended very succinctly(!)

  • Great work! I´m intrigued by the pose tho. It does look rather uncomfortable, almost as if your waiting to be punished or something, or maybe it´s just a daily exercise where you lift a log with out using your hands? Or perhaps your just exploring and enjoying the feeling of the wood wile pondering deep in thought, yes I think like that best. The longer I look (at the finished result) the more I like it.

  • Thanks, bC2! I've been surprised (and fascinated) by what people have seen in the painting since I made it. I intended it to be about fear of exposure and barriers and defensiveness, but I must admit I do like your interpretation. ;^>

  • Hi Doug, impressive work. Well done.

  • Cheers, Pete!

  • beautiful

  • Thats simply amazing. Great textures! Although its impressive, I am not sure if its appropriate to show that much wood though ;)

  • L... O... L!!! Your comment almost caused me a coffee-down-nostril moment. 9-D

  • Let me be 2d to LOL! Good call!

  • Awesome.

  • Cheers, Rorshak1313!

  • You're a very talented artist! The painting has light to it that almost gives it life! I kept thinking how uncomfortable the pose looks to hold, but you didn't hold it? Did you have someone take a photo?

  • Thanks, Maiyana! I used a photo for the composition and then painted one bended knee or elbow at a time, working with a mirror for the finer detail, so not as uncomfortable as it could have been(!) 9-D

  • i was thinking it could be pastels or paint

  • it looks liike paint to me

  • did you paint this?...or wuz it done on a computer program?....no that one is less than the other?...just curious

  • Hey, Gully. This is oil on canvas. I had to reconstruct the painting process in Photoshop, creating about 400 intermediate pictures from only 9 photos I took during its completion (which explains why I'm not in shot).

  • Hey, Wordword. Thanks! I've always been interested in the creative process, whether it be for painting, writing, music etc so I thought it would be good to show the construction process behind some of my own work.

  • A revelation to watch for a non-painter!

  • Thanks, Theramin! Looking over these photos was a healthy reminder than things often have to get much worse before they get better. ;v)

  • What a fantastic reconstruction animation — fascinating to see all the stages you went through, especially building up all the skin-tones. Wonderful work! ;8)
