It's kind of pointless since the size of the OS is basically equal to the level of complexity the developer puts into it. I once wrote a 'Sprite OS' for the PC which was about two-hundred bytes. I think this kind of video is fuelled by confusion over what an Operating System actually does.
@koolmonster7 You would rather put in DSL than Ubuntu 10.10 because Ubuntu 10.10 requires 600+mb of space in if you put it in your 1gb pendrive, you don't have muchspace to install addons for linux
i tried out linux. i found it to be more responsive than windows xp. :) i also found out that it comes with firefox when i tried it out on my first linux boot.
Did you say that you can run a simple file in the embedded version and it will install it to usb completely? Because I am trying to figure out how to burn an iso file to usb as I have a computer without a hard drive I want to get working.
hey can someone help me i got a Dell Latitude Cpx Laptop and now when it boots it says "Cannot Recognise Divice In Modual Bay" or somthing and i cant boot. help i just spent 60$ on a new battery!!!
I think it's the best choice for older PCs. I have it running on a 433MHz Celeron with 64MB of RAM and a 4GB hard drive. It's fast and snappy.
Windows 95 was available on 13 DMF formatted 3.5 inch floppy disks. That's about 21MB. So DSL is bigger than base Win95. But Win95 ceased being supported and updated around the year 2000. DSL continues to be supported and updated. (Not to mention Linux is vastly superior to the Win9x OS's.)
this is interesting... btw can someone help me with using microsoft IIS? i would like to share my iso files with the world. (got nt4, 2003, xp, vista, 2000, me, 98, 95 and alot of other crap.) help! please :)
so i built a site within IIS on server 2003 web edition, but cant go global with it. in other words it is not externally accesible. i need more help...
yeah i have this on my pen drive and i dont use a virtual machine but i am still kinda confused..i cannot figure out to "save" what i have done. "save" as in the configuration settings i have made when i boot it up or things like that.
You can make the screen recorder follow the virtual machine by clicking your mouse where the guest Operating system is. Or of course mouse integration!

WHY use DSL? Downsides: 50MB ISO file UGLY! Very few programs, none of which are really, user friendly There is an alternative, called SliTaz ISO on 25MB Looks WAY better than DSL, like Ubuntu Clearlooks MORE programs, also more commonly known, Abiword instead of Beaver etc. A own repository Faster Desktop effects And much more. Try it out, post a video on it too ;)
i've been using SliTaz and it's not very customizable from what i've seen. They're "claimed" Firefox... Den Echo or something. So I don't really like it.
the embedded runs windowed however you can change that with crtl+alt+f at least for me it works however don't use it that way better get a virtual machine :)

8MB RAM?!
You'd just about get DOS working on it! And there they go, running a full Linux on it!
Ok, now i'm stuck. What would you put on a 1GB pen drive? Ubuntu 10.10 or DSL?
koolmonster7 1 year ago
@koolmonster7 Well you could even run Windows 95 on 8 MB RAM. DOS just needs a few kb.

You can download Plop boot manager to boot from an USB drive!!!
You just need to burn the plpbt.iso file into a cd or dvd, reboot your computer and you'll be able to boot from an USB drive ;)

There's also windows 3.1, which is under 7 megs. I still use it on one of my laptops. And also, does DSL let you install it to the hard drive?
joeythegeek1942 2 years ago
The OS is well over 50megs.
It is compressed using SquashFS when stored as an image file. Once it boots, it decompressed to a much larger size in memory.
