Jordon hands down? Look at by how far Wayne Gretzky broke basically ever hockey record. Most of them will never be touched again. Statistically Gretzky is by far the best athlete ever, in any sport.
@postpolo1 yea jordan would be athlete of the 90's not 80's because that's when he was winning championships and earning mvp's. The bulls weren't even the team of the 80's in the nba.
Looking at the records of Gretzky (check wikipedia) the only person who can come close to being considered a serious challenge is Mike Tyson. Micheal Jordan's stats are not really as impressive as Gretzky's. Gretzky had 215 points in one season that is 4x the point total of most other super stars of that period.
mike tyson is my favorite boxer, but as it said the best athlete I have to go with Bo Jackson because he was a two sport athlete who excelled at both sports.
Gretzky. Why? Gretzky broke every record in the book ( excluding goalie records). When it was considered to be an accomplishment to get 50 points in a year, Gretzky was scoring over 200+ points. Thats 4 times the average player. Even Jordan could'nt do that. Also, consider that hockey is a lot more demanding physically and truly a mans game. There is no hitting, checking or fighting in Basketball. He brought his team 4 Stanley Cups and made every player around him better. Hands down, Gretzky
It's between Jordan and Gretzky. I would give the edge to Gretzky because his records are impossible to beat.

Best competitor of all time, Jordan. Best athlete of all time, Bo Jackson. Debilitating hip injury side-lined a great career.
