First of all, you refer to linux as the OS, WRONG... If you want to make the everyday joe understand what "linux" is, I suggest you make another show by presenting to the user what the kernel and the Desktop Evniorment (Be it KDE, Gnome, XFCE, etc.), Please keep your facts in order.
Now to a more serious issue:
You say Mepis is easier than linux, but thats kinda wrong dude.
Ubuntu is 100% user friendly from the start and it installs much more software to start with.
Installing new programs is probably the most difficult thing to do in Linux, and I almost turned away from Linux just because of that. After I did some reading, though, I understood.
Instead of using Synaptic Package Manager, if you just want to go to a website and download a program from there, most programs download to the desktop as a .DEB file. Right click on it, choose to open it in KPackage, and click the Install button. On the next box, click Install again.
I forgot to mention, what I typed above applies to Mepis. Other Linux distributions might have different ways to install new programs.
Avoid installing new programs from .TAR.GZ files at all costs, though. You need to do extremely technical stuff, and a lot of times it doesn't work. I still haven't found out how to do it right.
You think Synaptic is complicated? Mac heads eh...

Stick to .DEB or .RPM files if you can.
