I heard of the news of this on a radio interview with Bernard on Triple J.
Yes, the threat of a ban on the whole album lead to the decision to redo the track. All a bit of a shock really. Goes to show how touchy the QLD Govt. were at the time.
Like I say, I'd love to hear the un-censored version. I'm surprised Powderfinger don't just perform it live anyway in defiance now. Not sure if this is the true version.. I have a CD player fault to check my Limited Edition copy of the album to check.
i heard that the finger held off the release of the complete album as they were asked not to release this song during the time of the disgusting senseless death at palm island and the bullshit lies that came afterwards... they felt it that important that they held back all songs till the waters had calmed a bit...
Justice doesnt seem to work here... how can a man be murdered and their killer be protected by law - disgrace australia...
@Reproducer100 I only know about it cause their drummer told me and the reason they wanted to ban it is because Of a court case and it was pointing fingers at whos responsible
@Dyzm HELL YEH ! I have no idea why they HAD to modify this song during HURLEYS TRIAL. THE PEOPLE HAVE AN OPINION, and this opinion should not be prejudiced by the fact that a trial is running. The jury are the ultimate people that decide. God i love these guys, they acknowledge what is wrong with our country, and why we still have 'Black Tears'. PEACE
Yeah thats if the music industry was so god dam corrupt.... Its not the days of bob dylan, jeff buckly, bob marly, hendix or john lennon anymore.... the focus now days is relating to a youth for profits through a music netword that keeps the focus on mild tone messages...
If this got put to number one.... than global focus would be put towards the message in the song about aborigianal genocide.... and than ofcourse something good may really happen here in aus.
I'm sorry to see that you removed your comment, Mick as you were telling the truth. However, Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon are still held in high esteem by today's rock fans as well. Jeff went to No.2 in the UK last Christmas with "Hallelujah". I think that the record companies need to sign artists to a pressing and distribution deal - leave it to artists to decide what to put out and what messages THEY want to put out in their own filter. That's what democracy is.

This should have been issued as a single and given top 40 radio airplay, would have given them the number one hit that they so richly deserve.
