@ShadowTheDemonWolf77 In the last episode of the first series Al sacrificed himself to bring Ed's soul back from the gate after Envy stabbed him. When Ed woke up and realized what Al did, he sacrificed himself to bring Al back. In order for that to happen, an equivalent exchange had to be made. For Al's body and soul to be brought back, Ed had to sacrifice his Arm and his life in his world. That's why Ed was brought to the other side of the gate and into our world. It was an equivalent exchange.

@candle458458 I actually know now. Envy killed Ed and then Al brought him back and then Al died and Ed did the equivilant exchange (which he is going to give something on himself to bring al back). Then the portal opend and Envy gabbed Ed and they both went threw the gate to that world.

Brotherhood had a much better later-half series plot/ending then the 2003 version did, in my humble opinion. think there was some Brotherhood movie too, but not sure.
