@bluesugar32 Well if the writers liked zutara better by your own logic they must have been a part of that fanbase in at least one sense. Ergoe they wrote scenes that they liked so that other people could be pleased by it. Otherwise why else would the scenes have made the cut into the show? I'd like to think that the show wasn't influenced by egocentric writers (regardless of ship) solely trying to air their own opinions; that rather they were sharing and entertaining their viewers, wouldn't you?

Early on in the show (before Zutara) the Kataang ship was really NOTHING original or interesting, REALLY, it was a bland, uninventive relationship (boy gets girl...THE END! >:C) and the show shoved this in your face, it was OBVIOUS!! then BAM! Katara and Zuko get this complex relationship out of now where! subtlty made it cute,and that finale fight, it was made clear that they both care about each other(to risk their lives). THAT is TRUE! and no Kataanger can deny it!
KatAang: Love, friendship, forgivness, understanding, passion, several passionate sennes, risking their lives for each other, hugs, kissing, loss, end up together
EVERY ZUTARIAN LISTEN! KATAANG WON, GET OVER IT! I get that in some people's eyes Zutara is "cute" or "Sexy", but it was never meant to be. Kataang is true love, love at first sight, love to risk your life for, A Love That Never Dies, love that can never be torn. Zuko risked his life to save her because he was the only one who could, not because he loved her. It's called "Being a Hero." He married Mai in the end, and the new show focuses on AANG AND KATARA'S SON, not ZUKO AND KATARA'S SON!

@Greendude11green Actually the new show focuses on Aang being reborn as a female water bender, who has to learn air bending from Aang's son. He is a main character, but the new show is focused around the new Avatar.
KatAang=Meant to be, Love at first site, about 10 hugs, a couple kisses, a very passionate kiss, a kiss in a cave (never really confirmed but I believe it's true), him saving the world for her, helping her in tough situations (Yan Rha), always worried about him, always protecting her, she bringing him back to life....many other things but i don't have that much space.

Incase none of you Kataangers knew, Zutara was orginally suppose to happen. Zuko+ Katara were orginally suppose to be a couple, but because this show is for younger kids as well as older, Aang was put with Katara in the end. Younger kids wouldn't understand why Katara was with someone that use to be bad, and not the main guy. Olders kids see that Zuko has grown into the man he was always suppose to be without his fathers thumb over him. So what we Zutarians see, is actually there:D

@BenignViewer I don't see how the pilot hinted Kataang. It showed Katara much more grown up than Aang, and she even says, "I haven't done this since I was a kid!" (talking about penguin sledding) She regards Aang as a kid, and he's just a kid with a crush on her. Aang did say she was still a kid but she obviously doesn't see herself as such, so why would she be attracted to one? Direct quote- "Zuko was orginally going to be the love interest to Katara. She does like bad boys."
@BenignViewer And also if you look at the episode that has the play of them, Katara and Zuko are flirting throughout it, and when Aang kisses her she pulls back and tells him to stop, and that she's confused. Aang and Katara did end up together, but that is because of the viewer age. If Avator was focused just for teenagers, do you really think a 15 year old and 13 year old would be together? (that's how old they were by the end of the show.)

Your video really doesn't prove anything. How do I know that it was created by Mike and Bryan?(It was hilarious tho:P) And even if Mike and Bryan really intended Kataang from the beginning, they aren't the only writers of the show, there are many other writers that wrote episodes in the series, who wrote moments for Zutara.

That video (watch?v=FX6zWBQRXvA&feature=related) was from the 2008 SDCC, it's official - Bryke introduced it. That really does prove it. "The will of Mike and Bryan" is pretty obvious, sorry (It was hilarious though =P).

@bluesugar32 Um... I was accepting your point of view. Some of the writers may well have enjoyed the Zutara pairing more than canon, like much of the show's fanbase... But the point I'm trying to make here is that the headwriters (Bryke) had determined what they were going to do from episode 1. To suggest otherwise is naive. What I'm trying to stress (impartially) is that the show isn't about a contest for Katara's affections, but a journey where the characters discover where their own lie.
@BloodBender13 Pretty much what the debate boils down too, lol. What the show gave us vs. what people wanted out of the show. It shouldn't be a war, either relationship could work out, but the way the characters grew and developed over the course of the show lead to what we have in Canon. I loved all the beautigul Kataang moments as well.
I truly respect Zutarians, but I have to say that I'm a Kataang supporter. I see much more than a childhood crush. I see two people who have so much chemistry, who share a history of losing loved ones to the war and who will always fight side by side with each other. I see passion and an extremely strong bond. They went through rough times, but in the end, they always understood each other and supported each other. Plus, how could classify the last kiss as a "quick kiss"? No offense to anyone.

@katara314 It's not about which is better, or who won. There was never a contest of affections. The hidden maturity of the show is in how it steers away from traditional romatic dramas and instead focuses upon the characters developments and where what they each learn about themselves leads them.
Bryke knew what they had in mind from the outset and I felt the penultimate moment where Katara returns Aangs affections a beautiful statement of emotional maturity, rather than the physical.

@katara314 I'm sorry if I was critical, I am a cynic by nature but an optimist at heart, which is why my impression of Kataang is like yours now, andy why I agree that the hints of shipping are no real indication of affection between Zutara. The show does play them up a bit too but when you're fourteen and blow your temper at someone (especially given that they've chased and tried to capture you for months) you are angry, not suppressing a ship of UST. But that's just my take on things.
OH MY GOD!!! The only reason WHY Zuko went on a field-trip with Katara was because she was being a total b**ch and he wanter to get her off his back!!! Where's the love that Katara feels for Aang that the series beautifully built up over the years? NOWHERE!! Zuko loves MAI and always will! And besides, Aang's the freakin' AVATAR! I think the reason I'm a Zutara fanis that Aang is the Avatar, and as we learned when he was learning to open his chakaras, he is unable to have worldly connections. If it came right down to it and Katara was in fact the person throwing the world off balance (a bit of a stretchbut possible) he'd have to kill her. But overall he wouldn't be able to give her all of his love. And Mai's a cold, boring character. IMO
@Goddessdaughter I'm not gonna rip your head off, but the whole point of the climax if the series was that Aang couldn't kill anyone - his own personal achievement as the avatar. And the whole point of the Chakras was that Aang chose Katara over the world - and only tried to open them up in Ba Sing Se to save her. IMO this is why it was so easy for Azula to catch him off guard, as he struggled to control the Avatar state upon a contradiction.
@BenignViewer I understand that completely that the climax of the show as that being an Air Nomad he didn't believe in killing and that as the Avatar he was suppose to but he didn't etc. However when the writers broke their own rule about the chakras that was just really irritating for me. In the end it's suppose to show that things can work out he can be the Avatar and have a family (reason he ran off in the 1st place he wanted one) but I just felt it would have been more true to reality. But

Also, I thought I once heard it floating around on an interview or something by a writer that Zuko and Katara were actually suppose to fall in love and develop that way but the idea was shot down because Aang, main character that all kids would hopefully love, would be left out. And Zuko would have like a 3-1 advantage.

@Goddessdaughter It was probably a little more family orientated (there were some adult themes underlying) but on the whole it was for all ages. That is likely why we're having this debate, lol. I agree with you totally; if the show was geared towards teens Zutara would have happened, the typical love-hate good-girl/bad-boy relationship which dominates teen drama. It is just as cliched as the Kataang ending. Either way, when a relationship is built to the target audience, it is superficial.

What a great connection to make with the avatar and various ideologies for a cartoon. Up there with the best animes in that regard. =D
@Goddessdaughter Oh and Mai isn't supposed to be cold or boring, but she was underdeveloped (as she wasn't a lead character) So I don't blame you for feeling that way. She does come across like that. Still, IMO she's perfect for dealing with moody!Zuko and she doesn't let him get away with brooding, nor gets angry/ngagy when he does. In short she's a more stable chracter, who interacts with Zuko far better in a relationship (lol, I'm Maiko all the way) nad it was a shame the show didn't show it.

But in my experience, it's those couples that never seem to have little fights or arguements that seem to end up having issues. Mai was very underdeveloped and I just...I'm not, not a fan. I do enjoy her character. When she went against Azula "I love Zuko more than I fear you." I was cheering my head off. (Actually I was converted to Zutara after the shows end) I finally analyzed things.
@Goddessdaughter Lol, I loved that moment too. Was sad that Mai was underdeveloped, we really don't know what their relationship would have been like. I also agree with the writers double crossing themselves, it was sloppily done. point is that it was more the air nomads morals than his duty as the avatar itself that ended up binding aang, and in the end he chose what was right for him (I kinda enjoyed that little show of independence, although poorly explained and explored).
I can see a very powerful bond between Zuko and Katara, but I don't think its anything romantic. It would be more of a brother/close friend type of relationship.
Zuko's character is incredibly passionate, and so are his relationships to others. Because of the history between him and Katara, and his ultimate redemption, their friendship is very strong; but that's all it is: friendship.
I like kataang because it's more of those real, fluff, cute couples, not like those dramatic ones you read in stories that ALWAYS end up the same. Yeah, opposites attract, I get it, but I still prefer kataang and so did the directors. Zutara just makes good fanfictions.
@purpleunicorn197 Lol, what is it about love-hate relationships? It is a proven fact that in RL they don't work. They are the subject of teen romance novels, the good-girl meets bad-boy speel. While entertaining for some to read about, it is dangerous in any relationship, & often stem from 'obligatory friendhips' (something else altogether). Point is, I respect that you enjoy the idea of Zutara, but it's chemistry is superficial in the A:TLA universe, as the creators made Kataang from the start.
KatAang = A childhood crush, a couple quick kisses, a hug or two, and an almost-kiss in a cave.
ZuTara = Sin, redemption, hatred, forgiveness, several passionate, intense scenes, universal symbolism, a timeless story, him risking his life for her, her saving his life back... I could go on.
While I'm okay with both ships, I think my choice here is pretty obvious. =3
@Pevensify Don't worry, I won't kill you:) They DID kiss in the cave of two lovers, yes the kiss during the invasion and at the play were short, but they really weren't times for kissing. Their last kiss went on for who knows how long so you can't really say the had a couple short kisses. I personally BELIEVE their relationship is more than a childish crush because hey they get married!

Honestly, I think the fact that both Aang and Zuko saved Katara in the same way(rocks falling on her), but she was only happy when Aang did shows me that Aang and Katara were meant to be together. But that is just my opinion.
Actually, the creators planned for Zuko and Katara to end up together in the beginning, but they changed her love interest to Aang when the audience became mostly kid based. I just wish they had stuck with the origional idea of Katara and Zuko ending up together!

Of course there could have been a Ty Lee-Aang romance. A bit odd but still, she is beautiful and has the same attitude as him so they'd be a good match. Even more odd woukd be Sokka and Zuko's sister as a romantic relationship. The sarcastic with the insane.
If Zutara had happened then Katara might have become like some of the Fire Nation girls seen in the show and Zuko might have become like his father and locked her away somewhere if she didn't become a typical Fire Nation woman and give up waterbending. Aang has kept her safe throughout the adventures and has never given up on her no matter what. It shows from the start that he is inlove with Katara at first sight. I'm all for Kataang.

EVERY ZUTARIAN LISTEN! KATAANG WON, GET OVER IT! I get that in some people's eyes Zutara is "cute" or "Sexy", but it was never meant to be. Kataang is true love, love at first sight, love to risk your life for, A Love That Never Dies, love that can never be torn. Zuko risked his life to save her because he was the only one who could, not because he loved her. It's called "Being a Hero." He married Mai in the end, and the new show focuses on AANG AND KATARA'S SON, not ZUKO AND KATARA'S SON!

Incase none of you Kataangers knew, Zutara was orginally suppose to happen. Zuko+ Katara were orginally suppose to be a couple, but because this show is for younger kids as well as older, Aang was put with Katara in the end. Younger kids wouldn't understand why Katara was with someone that use to be bad, and not the main guy. Olders kids see that Zuko has grown into the man he was always suppose to be without his fathers thumb over him. So what we Zutarians see, is actually there:D

Mike & Bryan confirm in the commentaries for the third season DVD box set that it was all about the Kataang & Maiko from the beginning, noting that "[the Zutarians] are probably mad right now."

@BenignViewer I don't see how the pilot hinted Kataang. It showed Katara much more grown up than Aang, and she even says, "I haven't done this since I was a kid!" (talking about penguin sledding) She regards Aang as a kid, and he's just a kid with a crush on her. Aang did say she was still a kid but she obviously doesn't see herself as such, so why would she be attracted to one? Direct quote- "Zuko was orginally going to be the love interest to Katara. She does like bad boys."

@BenignViewer And also if you look at the episode that has the play of them, Katara and Zuko are flirting throughout it, and when Aang kisses her she pulls back and tells him to stop, and that she's confused. Aang and Katara did end up together, but that is because of the viewer age. If Avator was focused just for teenagers, do you really think a 15 year old and 13 year old would be together? (that's how old they were by the end of the show.)

Your video really doesn't prove anything. How do I know that it was created by Mike and Bryan?(It was hilarious tho:P) And even if Mike and Bryan really intended Kataang from the beginning, they aren't the only writers of the show, there are many other writers that wrote episodes in the series, who wrote moments for Zutara.

@bluesugar32 Lol, you do know what the COMICCON is right? That guarantees that that video was made by Bryke, since only approved samples by Nickelodeon can be screened. That video (watch?v=FX6zWBQRXvA&feature=related) was from the 2008 SDCC, it's official - Bryke introduced it. That really does prove it. "The will of Mike and Bryan" is pretty obvious, sorry (It was hilarious though =P).
The writers did suggest 'things' so that the whole fanbase could be pleased, but it was never a 'competition'.

@bluesugar32 Um... I was accepting your point of view. Some of the writers may well have enjoyed the Zutara pairing more than canon, like much of the show's fanbase... But the point I'm trying to make here is that the headwriters (Bryke) had determined what they were going to do from episode 1. To suggest otherwise is naive. What I'm trying to stress (impartially) is that the show isn't about a contest for Katara's affections, but a journey where the characters discover where their own lie.

It shouldn't be a war, either relationship could work out, but the way the characters grew and developed over the course of the show lead to what we have in Canon. I loved all the beautigul Kataang moments as well.

I truly respect Zutarians, but I have to say that I'm a Kataang supporter. I see much more than a childhood crush. I see two people who have so much chemistry, who share a history of losing loved ones to the war and who will always fight side by side with each other. I see passion and an extremely strong bond. They went through rough times, but in the end, they always understood each other and supported each other. Plus, how could classify the last kiss as a "quick kiss"? No offense to anyone.

@katara314 It's not about which is better, or who won. There was never a contest of affections. The hidden maturity of the show is in how it steers away from traditional romatic dramas and instead focuses upon the characters developments and where what they each learn about themselves leads them.
Bryke knew what they had in mind from the outset and I felt the penultimate moment where Katara returns Aangs affections a beautiful statement of emotional maturity, rather than the physical.

@katara314 I'm sorry if I was critical, I am a cynic by nature but an optimist at heart, which is why my impression of Kataang is like yours now, andy why I agree that the hints of shipping are no real indication of affection between Zutara. The show does play them up a bit too but when you're fourteen and blow your temper at someone (especially given that they've chased and tried to capture you for months) you are angry, not suppressing a ship of UST. But that's just my take on things.

I think the reason I'm a Zutara fanis that Aang is the Avatar, and as we learned when he was learning to open his chakaras, he is unable to have worldly connections. If it came right down to it and Katara was in fact the person throwing the world off balance (a bit of a stretchbut possible) he'd have to kill her. But overall he wouldn't be able to give her all of his love. And Mai's a cold, boring character. IMO

@Goddessdaughter I'm not gonna rip your head off, but the whole point of the climax if the series was that Aang couldn't kill anyone - his own personal achievement as the avatar. And the whole point of the Chakras was that Aang chose Katara over the world - and only tried to open them up in Ba Sing Se to save her. IMO this is why it was so easy for Azula to catch him off guard, as he struggled to control the Avatar state upon a contradiction.

@BenignViewer I understand that completely that the climax of the show as that being an Air Nomad he didn't believe in killing and that as the Avatar he was suppose to but he didn't etc. However when the writers broke their own rule about the chakras that was just really irritating for me. In the end it's suppose to show that things can work out he can be the Avatar and have a family (reason he ran off in the 1st place he wanted one) but I just felt it would have been more true to reality. But

Also, I thought I once heard it floating around on an interview or something by a writer that Zuko and Katara were actually suppose to fall in love and develop that way but the idea was shot down because Aang, main character that all kids would hopefully love, would be left out. And Zuko would have like a 3-1 advantage.

I agree with you totally; if the show was geared towards teens Zutara would have happened, the typical love-hate good-girl/bad-boy relationship which dominates teen drama. It is just as cliched as the Kataang ending. Either way, when a relationship is built to the target audience, it is superficial.

@Goddessdaughter Oh and Mai isn't supposed to be cold or boring, but she was underdeveloped (as she wasn't a lead character) So I don't blame you for feeling that way. She does come across like that. Still, IMO she's perfect for dealing with moody!Zuko and she doesn't let him get away with brooding, nor gets angry/ngagy when he does. In short she's a more stable chracter, who interacts with Zuko far better in a relationship (lol, I'm Maiko all the way) nad it was a shame the show didn't show it.

But in my experience, it's those couples that never seem to have little fights or arguements that seem to end up having issues. Mai was very underdeveloped and I just...I'm not, not a fan. I do enjoy her character. When she went against Azula "I love Zuko more than I fear you." I was cheering my head off. (Actually I was converted to Zutara after the shows end) I finally analyzed things.

I also agree with the writers double crossing themselves, it was sloppily done. point is that it was more the air nomads morals than his duty as the avatar itself that ended up binding aang, and in the end he chose what was right for him (I kinda enjoyed that little show of independence, although poorly explained and explored).

I can see a very powerful bond between Zuko and Katara, but I don't think its anything romantic. It would be more of a brother/close friend type of relationship.
Zuko's character is incredibly passionate, and so are his relationships to others. Because of the history between him and Katara, and his ultimate redemption, their friendship is very strong; but that's all it is: friendship.

1. aang is the main character and it would really suck if the main character lost the girl to his ex-enemy
2. zuko got to be king. he got mai, & if he got katara, it would b like zuko: 3 aang: 1

While entertaining for some to read about, it is dangerous in any relationship, & often stem from 'obligatory friendhips' (something else altogether). Point is, I respect that you enjoy the idea of Zutara, but it's chemistry is superficial in the A:TLA universe, as the creators made Kataang from the start.

Their last kiss went on for who knows how long so you can't really say the had a couple short kisses. Actually, the creators planned for Zuko and Katara to end up together in the beginning, but they changed her love interest to Aang when the audience became mostly kid based. I just wish they had stuck with the origional idea of Katara and Zuko ending up together!

meh,kinda support both pairings.But Kataang was planned from the start so there was no helping it :) just wish they'd make Aaang taller and buffer xD

I just want to put my two-cents in, and say that no matter what any one says or wants, Katara and Aang *ARE* the canon, and if u can't respect the canon, then why the hell are you watching it anyways?? And because they *ARE* the canon, that means that no matter what you say or do, Katara and Aang will for ever be what the out come of Avatar: The Last Airbender is.

i understand the zutara fans....but seriously who would date a guy whos been such a jerk to them? at least anng hasnt been as aweful as zuko has been to katara. im happy katara and anng are together in the end. i'm proud of katara not standing for what zuko has done. remember how katara hated zuko? think of the numerous reasons why.

Idk, i like zutara waay better. Ang just seems so young compared to katara, i feel like zuko ads more spice i guess. lol Karata needs a MAN.....not a little brother.

My choice was always Zutara. Zuko is the perfect character, and i always give my support to couples that should have happened. One of the good things in Zutara, is that Zuko is always very romantic w/ Katara. I loved her friendship w/ Aang, i laughted a lot, but in couple terms, Zutara owns...

i like both.i when that kataang r real,but i like zutara because it makes more since because aang is 12 and katara is 14,zuko is like 16 or somthing.but still i like kataang,zutara and taang(toph 12 aang 12). but kataang is real.so watever.zutara is like buddy romace or somthing like that.taang just make since to me and they r cute.so kataang won.ok

Zutara isn't even a legit couple.... just b/c the creators said they considered it at first, and because people think they look good together, they were thrown together by part of the fandom. KATAANG IS LEGIT! IT ALWAYS HAS AND WILL BE! Stop going into denial!

@Asuna35 I understand where you're coming from with this, I really do. Heck, I ship BOTH pairings, but for different reasons.
I'm not going to try and 'convert' all of these people to Zutara (that's my main ship) but right here, what you're doing, it's called trolling. You're looking for a reaction.
Not all people like the same pairings. Cry me a river, build a bridge, and please get over this dumb argument.

I get where they're coming from ( they would look good together and be romantic), but Kataang happened and some still say it shouldn't have and it's a legit couple. THOSE are the ones I've got a problem with.

aang and katara are a very sweet couple, and who am i to argue with the creators of the show? BUT i also like zutara because they have a complicated relationship, which makes it exciting, while aang and katara both get along so well. both versions work for me.

Of course there could have been a Ty Lee-Aang romance. A bit odd but still, she is beautiful and has the same attitude as him so they'd be a good match. Even more odd woukd be Sokka and Zuko's sister as a romantic relationship. The sarcastic with the insane.

If Zutara had happened then Katara might have become like some of the Fire Nation girls seen in the show and Zuko might have become like his father and locked her away somewhere if she didn't become a typical Fire Nation woman and give up waterbending. Aang has kept her safe throughout the adventures and has never given up on her no matter what. It shows from the start that he is inlove with Katara at first sight. I'm all for Kataang.

@InsaneWriting Katara would not be like fire nation girls since she lives in the water tribe, and if Zuko and Katara ever did get together I doubt Zuko would lock her up if she wasn't like Fire Nation women. He would obviously know she isn't, since she's a water bender, and do you honestly think he would at all? And Aang hasn't kept her safe the entire time, usually it was her protecting him. It does show from the start that he likes her, but in reality how many 12 and 14 year olds date? None.

People all around the world for generations have dated older people and some relationships turn out very well. But you obviously wouldn't know about that would you?
