I HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING WILLIE NINJA. HE WAS THE BEST. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO. IT WAS BRIEFLY SHOWN IN PARIS IS BURNING. GLAD I FINALLY FOUND THE VIDEO.
In my black tights Just throwing shade Doing the steps that Some queen made I remember the first time I saw it Told my brother to put me upon it It wasn't easy No 1 2 3 Took a long time To learn to feel free But here I am Vogueing pretty In some club Deep in the city DEEP IN VOGUE
@spirit162003 yeah, this is where madonna got it from. but in reality, it was going on in all the clubs. people were dancing like this. and madonna would go to these clubs sometimes and see them dancing. so i guess she decided to make a song about it.
Fantastic track and an iconic video! I got the 12-inch in the 90s and I completely agree madonna just magpied this foir "Vogue" which is a so much weaker song anyway. Lourdes is a much better singer than Madge, the dancving is better, the Moore/Orbit remix work is a revelation!
It has something deeply moving about it, and a real sense of danger, discovery and peril, as the girl character moves into the big city - that's a big part of what makes it so very appealing. -Great orchestration too.
to all those anoying Madonna fans...hit the road...this is the real stuff...and if you don't like it...just don't watch and don't bother to give unintresting comments!..huray for Malcolm RIP....
Like totopatter, I'm really moved by this track. I always loved it, but did not understand its significance until I saw the 1988 documentary "Paris Is Burning" a couple of years later.
Like totopatter, I'm really moved by this track. I always loved it, but did not understand its significance until I saw the 1988 documentary "Paris Is Burning" several years later.
this was the first "Vogue" -- madonna sent a friend to sit in on the production of this vid, (choreagraphed by legendary willie ninja) which led to her biggest song / vid up to that time...u can hear and see vogue so much in this sort "prototype" which many prefer to madonna's
Madonna's friend went to the taping of the Deep in Vogue video (choreographed by the legendary Willi Ninja) and told Madonna about Willi and the dancing, which then led to the song and video Vogue. Madonna did what pop artists do best, which is take from liminal sub-cultures and bring it to the pop-culture sphere. This song and video were instrumental to that.
i think Madonna's interpretation of Vogue was equally as good, she was out on the scene around this time and very much influenced by Vogueing, remember Malcom provided a soundtrack to what was already going on, this is his take on the Dancefloor sensation, Madonna had hers... both equally as important and unique in my opinion, they were both inspired by gay, black culture at the time, which one came firt is irrelavent.
I fail to see the wrong it that to be honest, she looked amazing and it was meant to happen. Her connection with Black, gay culture is legendary, the day her ballet dancer took her to a Detroit gay bar when she was 16 changed her life and gave us the fearless woman we know and love, the woman whom has openly supported gay culture for decades, so her priorities have changed bu that doesnt bother me. Her back up dancers were spotted by her at a Vogue ball in 1989 btw.
Not really, Vogue was written and concieved as a song in early 1989, it was to be the B-Side to Keep It Together released late 1989, Warners decided it was to good a track so released it as a single in late feb 1990, the actual song was concieved way before that, around the time this was concieved, it was released late by default. No one is copying no one here, why make hostility when there is none?
Madonna was inspired by the Vogue balls of NYC in the late 1980's-early 90's just like Mr Mclaren was along with C&C Music Factory and other trance/house groups, in the early 80's Mclaren was rocking the punk/hip hop rap scene, get your facts right.
@benjo231 No that is clearly wrong. This was recorded and mixed from December 1989 to early January 1990, then released in late March 1990. This was supposed to be on the B-side of Keep It Together which of course set to be released in late January 1990. The video itself was shot on February 9 and 10, 1990. Copyright registrations even give creation dates in Q4 of 1989 and Q1 1990.
Yay! Willie Ninja!!! McLaren may not have created anything literally, but he brought a magnifying lens to important movements like the voguer's balls in NY. He had a great way bringing talented people to the forefront who might not have had a chance otherwise.
never saw this extended version , thanx for posting , RIP Malcolm. 20 somethings , watch , learn and take notes about what a shameless idea thief Madgezilla is.
actually...if you check out Jody Watley's video for her song "Friends", you'll see that she had vougers in her video befor Madonna also. and maybe even befor Malcolm.
@totopatter it does that for me too....I really can never get tired of watching this......RIP Willie N......this video is a testament to the Art of Vogue, and a part of his Legacy.
@mkpyle67 "far truer to the spirit of Vogue", really? Can you ellaborate that or you just say things without thinking? Besides that, Madonna never said she invented Vogue, however it is undeniable she was the responsible for bringing it into mainstream and letting the world know what it is. And just for the record, Madonnawas already voguing in 1989, before the song Vogue, while performing Exppress Yourself.
