  • still one of my favorite drills

  • Silkaem....I don't who you are but you can keep that hate speech to yourself. That's my homie, friend and brother. So fuck you and anything you have to stay. You don't hate on another member of your family like that. Nobody comes to talk shit about you. If you don't like this then stop hating nigga.

  • I'm so glad that Kustoms is gone. Now we can get back to a classy announcer for the Legion.

  • Why are so many band members on the sidelines?

  • Comment removed

  • @porkboi Thanks, I've always enjoy the sounds of NSU. Their numbers seem tohave grown from 2008 when I saw them in person against South Carolina State, but the sound is still great.

  • @patrat236 let me correct him, thats a&t on the sidelines

  • @TravelerofFortune thank you...

  • @patrat236 That's A&T's band on the sidelines lol

  • @nsu1997 Oh....Thanks

  • i still think it was counted off way too slow... still beasting though.

  • 5 Flags? Really? And yet STILL not in sink? Reall color guard? Gentleman1911, I need to sit where you sat, cuz I SWEAR I like the show a whole lot better watching this clip than in the sit where I sat at the stadium!!!

  • @pbsstep1914 they might as well not even brought the flag girls lol atleast get an even number of girls

  • NSU a beast i dont care what nobody say...if they drum majors would do more stuff instead of conducting all the time they would be better but other than that they brass aint no bitch

  • @djunior2011 dude that's the whole point of a drum major is to conduct and lead a band. being a drum major is all about leadership not just dancing all of the time.

  • @TheDragonmaster18 i understand that but if you were a drum major you would want to dance a little bit right

  • @djunior2011 yes and just dance a little bit but still lead the band. most drum majors have forgotten what being a drum majoe is really all about

  • @TheDragonmaster18 well im in a highschool band, where i live thats all drum majors do

  • @djunior2011 i live in texas and the drum majors in texas both showstyle and corps style do more so leading than dancing

  • How do they manage to execute those intricate drills? Unbelievable!

  • practice .....

  • That's easy for you to say.... Every musician should practice but... What else?

  • @davionbattle1 lol thats the real reason lol practice...... execution with a plan...

  • @davionbattle1 Doc is a perfectionist [all our BDs are]... and he writes most of our drills... if they see something they don't like they will stop you and make you start over... it gets to the point where shows become so tight that if need be we could pull any drill from the season out at moment's notice... But like rmlginc said basically its focused practice with a set goal in mind: PRECISION & PERFECTION.

  • Kool. Whenever I get my high school band, they will mimic the spartan legion a lot.

  • They sound so empty but They do have hella talent & GREAT Arrangements. BEHOLD.......

  • if your going by this one performance then you are missing the whole picture of the legion,

  • I've viewed many and they WOW'd me the majority of the time but I just can't "feel" their sound. If you're curious to ask if I've seen them in person, my answer is YES. Honda 2007 they were many big words that mean great. Other than that if they add a feel effect, NO ONE will ever touch this band forever.

  • @killahcornbread the band you saw at honda in 06-07 is a totally different band then now in 09....for one we've jumped from like 190 to 280 over the years...i can tell u from experience...07 was my rookie year in the legion an we were beast then, but at camp in 09 wen we finaly got a chance to turn suntin all the way up it was like a whole different sound from my rookie year...there were times wen I would jus stop playin an be like GOOD LAWWD!!!

  • @WalkItOut61 Oh okay but overall this is a great band. I'm just used to hearing full execution of each horn from my band and other bands in the South. I'm at understanding with your standpoint. Wish you guys a great season in the Fall.

  • I strongly disagree! I hear a lot of college bands that sound empty... Spartan Legion is not one of them!

  • One of my two favorite bands. Great sound. Powerful and clean. Your attention to detail is impeccable. I only wish you had a stronger woodwind section to go with that great brass.

  • This is one of the most slept on bands in the MEAC. They have sounded great for the last couple of years.

  • BTW Great video work Gentlemen1911. Hopefully I will see Dr.Phillips for the Holidays. Maybe our paths will cross.

    Keep up the excellent work!

  • Having mixed emotions: This current era of "The Legion" is twice the size of when I marched with them. Sounds ten times better then when I marched. However, I'm just thinking of an ole' fighter's phrase. "Pound for Pound". Ole' skool will remember we had to learn a different show & dance routine for EVERY home game. Practice as late as 11pm & sometimes as early as 6am. In Business you learn to work 'Smarter not Harder" to achieve better results. Could this be the case with the Legion? I'm torn.

  • What u typed, REAL TALK, but I'm currently in the LEGION and school is a lot more demanding. We can't practice as late as we use to b/c (1) There's a lot more restrictions on campus about noise and the students being in band practice too late. (2) School is A LOT MORE [DEMANDING] and it's just not that generation anymore. I like what you said about "work 'Smarter not Harder' ", but it's just not THAT BAND anymore. I feel where you're coming from.Personally, I get tired of playing the same songs

  • nbscreamer: Dont let ole' skool "Pride" discourage you young kats from doin' yo thang! You Katz have taking The Legion to places us ole heads dream about. Many alumni would give an arm & leg to be in your place. I am a product of E.L.Fears! Our goal was to build one of the best Marching Bands in the country. Doc Sanford and your era has made that goal a reality. Your right, different generations, but the same goals in mind.

15,20 years from now, you will feel the same way!

  • @RhythmSensei I understand exactly what you mean. Times have definitely changed. Some changes were good, some were bad. The band doesn't practice that late anymore because of pressure from the administration to increase academic performance across the student body. And quite frankly, I'm all for it. Its time for NSU as a whole to take academics more seriously. Its a recession and the need to be a sound academic institution has never been higher. So encourage us to succeed in all aspects!

  • @knighfk That is ol' skool pride up there on highest rated. Thats all!! The administration was absolutely correct to put its foot down about academics. Your first priority is to get the education you or your parents are paying for. Even if you are on scholarship, you know what needs to be done to keep it. So please be encourage to absorb as much knowledge as you can. The World after college right now is in chaos!! Only the best and the brightest are surviving.

  • I'm a Norfolk native and graduate of Tennessee State. I favor the Aristocrats over most bands that's because I marched with that wonderful band for my entire college career. But I must say, Norfolk State has one brilliant sounding band! I would love to see TSU and NSU play each other. Paul Adams is an old friend of Tennessee State. He use to write for Jackson State eons ago. NSU, you are a shinning example of musical class. Keep kicking butt!

  • I do agree, they have one of the best sounds. They actually play dynamically, most HBCU's just blast every note. The brass sections actually push all notes with a well controlled crescendo for power. Great Job!!!

  • I LOVE there sound but I do not like their drills

  • What is it that you do not like about the drills?

Thanks for the sound compliment though. We try.

  • I dont want this to sound bad but the drills are boring..... Again I only admire Norfolk. I dont think they have an equal as far as sound. Their brass have the best tone and intensity AND volume... Ive heard louder ensembles that size but none with anywhere near the quality. I am so glad that at least one Black institution is teaching its students to not disturb the balance of power and quality.

  • that is indeed what doc. sanford and mr. adams do. and they do it well

  • I cannot describe how much I love their sound

  • well sorry you dont like their drills but i think norfolk drill the way the do to keep quality sound and balance they have. most bands who tend to drill complicated tend to lose sound and cant hear what they're playing sometimes...just my opinion.

  • Thats what I was thinking but I didn't want to assume anything.

  • I LOVE YOU LEGION! SPARTAN PRIDE!!!!!

  • yo! on sum real!!! dey sound so GUD!!!

  • Yea this has been their biggest size in 11 years!

  • NSU got all up in NCA&T this year!!!LOL

  • Comment removed

  • have they gotten larger.....

  • About the same size as last year. Actually, they had about 20 plus people with them that hadn't checked off so they didn't march.

  • Ok, that's what sup. Now they be having some weird arrangement, but when it comes to playing with finesse, and cleanliness, and well intonation this is a band that is all around and looks good while doing it. Keep it up NSU..

  • never go wrong with NSU go Legion and they the 1st Band 2 play ma favorite MJ song the right way Off The Wall
