  • Sounds like bad music from a 70's cop show .

  • what is the difference between a digital and analog synth?

  • Marc-your videos are a fantastic gateway to help the uninitiated grok the world of analog synths. While I've always had an arms-length interest in analog (well, several arms I suppose), I never bought any gear. I recently got the IMS-20 app and quickly grew obsessed. Considering buying a piece I quickly learned that 1) it's rare, 2) it's expensive, and 3) I'd probably get fleeced.

My question is what would you recommend (especially if one wants to tinker with the modular stuff)? Thanks

    -Chris

  • cool song, whats it called?

  • @44eelz It was originally a song I wrote for the band Furniture called "12 Watt Bulb." It became recycled into an Automatic Gainsay song called "Mine," and was recently recycled again as a theme to the YouTube Minimoog video. The main synth in it is the Moog Sonic Six.

  • Hawaii effect?

  • @chupathingy99 Yep! Watch my Wersi Bass Synth video to find out what that is.

  • I dig the tune, one of yours?

  • @actron Yes, thank you!

  • Moog Minimoog, Korg PS-3100, Roland SH-1000, Wersi Bass Synth, Technics SY-1010, Roland SH-3A, Yamaha CS50 (I don't know the last one).

  • @keyboardjeff Great job! The last isn't a synth as such, and isn't vintage, either. It's a Synthesizers (dot) com modular.

  • CS80?

  • @sephardimm Close!

  • @AutomaticGainsay

    CSY2 or a CS60, it must be. I own a SY2, but that's not it.

  • @sephardimm Closer, but still not it! : )

  • @AutomaticGainsay

Ok, now I got it, its a CS50.

  • @sephardimm Yes!

  • Wow that's different. A good thing these days. I like it.

  • @AhMeShite What is different?

  • analog synths sound like crap pass the word- (then maybe the ebay prices will settle down)- remember kids digital is the way to go- dont bid on analog synths- moogs and arps are terrible buy a dx7 or roland d50- analogs are not cool dont look stylish and theyre made poorly- pass the word- remember buy digital!!!!!!!!

  • sounds amazing i like it a lot ,, brushed drums and analog synths jaming, wow!!!!

  • @bethoveen3 Thanks! : )

  • Mix it properly and add vocals. Would be great. :)

  • Did you make a complete song of this? I want it!!

  • sound like shit

  • @S0v3r3ign69 Thank you for your insight.

  • @AutomaticGainsay Awesome tunes!

  • @pencildives Thank you!

  • @AutomaticGainsay You are one funny bloke Gainsay! I think what he MEANT to say is "Sounds THE shiat!" Why can't we be next door Neighbours! We'd never sleep! Tell me if you ever come to England & I'll show you around London upon a Parched Predicament!!!

P.S. 8th of September - Fever Ray LIVE! You know you want in!! He he!

  • @therealKINDLE I will tell you the next time I come to England. I actually spend a lot of time there!

  • What peice of gear is that with the hawaii effect?

  • @kekenalii The Wersi Synth Baß. I have a video on it, if you're interested!

  • Reminds me of The Flaming Lips

  • It's me. Thanks!

  • I'd love to hear more of your music! Where can I find it?

  • Thank you very much! You can go to my myspace page which is on my YouTube profile. If there is a song you particularly like, here or on MySpace, e-mail me at analogcompendium (at) gmail (dot) com, and I'll send it to you.

  • The Hawaii Effect switch? That's a new (old) one! I had to chuckle over that, though I honestly can't identify that particular synth....

The music in this video is awesome. Is it your's and your band's? It was great!!

  • Where did you find your modular synth? I always like hearing the stories of how analog synths were found, acquired, taken home and got going again. Cheers

  • Hello to the beloved yamaha cs-80v @ 01:27 onwards.

tks to mark doty for the sensational series of vintage videos

  • Hey Marc, Thanks for posting such amazing Synthesizer porn.

  • dude...digging your tunes. Very creative stuff.

  • Which is your favourite(s) synth(s) marc?

  • better yet, how about a movie about which and why? would love to see some new stuff! Cheers!

    -Fan

  • That's a good idea! I am pretty much down to my favorites presently, although I do buy other occasionally for demonstration. I have two favorites, and they're not very unique... the Moog Minimoog and the ARP 2600. The 2600 isn't even in this video! New videos coming... : )

  • Отлично! Весело! Класс!!!!

  • There's a Wersi Bass Synthesizer in there...

  • Analog synths are like soft butter of sound. Nice :)

  • minimoog, ps-3100, sh-1000, yahmaha cs-30, sh-3a, yamaha cs-60, moog modular,

    how's dat? cookie

  • Close, but no coooookieeeee. : )

  • yeh cant' figure what that one with the hawaii effect is, maybe one of those other silly ones like the moog sattelite? the one immediately after i'm sure is a yamaha cs something. Analogue i have jupiter-4, jx-3p and a non working axxe. had a cs-01 as wel;

  • hawaii effect is just a momentary glide button.

  • Man.. this track...so good i must listen to over and over...i couldnt find it on your myspace.

  • I love this cute music!

By the way, sir! I am new to the world of keyboards, what would you recommend to a beginner as far as informative periodicals go and a good starter keyboard? I have heard good things about the microKORG and it is reasonably priced as well.

  • IN 00:25 is Korg MS-20! Give me cookie :D

  • That isn't a Korg MS-20! No cookie for you. ; )

  • it's a Korg PS-3100 right?

    I'll take that cookie!

  • click64, teamhowdy got your cookie.

  • MS-20? Really? Come on.

  • cool I love moog

  • look at 1:02 "some of our audience are leaving the concert...quick, crank up the hawaii effect!"

  • nice song!

  • beautiful, check out my music-LB3

  • Yay, I saw a CS-80! But my back is prematurely aching...

  • Very cool! 5 X 5! Wow! The drum samples sound great, 'cause it sounds just like someone's there in the room with you. . . kicking a box with some wire hangers on it. . . JK. . .

  • I just want to be clear that while there are samples involved, they are not individual drum samples. That is live playing sampled in sections and arranged.

You know, so I had better control over when the box was kicked in relation to when the baking sheet was tapped on.

    ; )

  • Baking sheet? I had you pegged as a wire hanger man. . . I was actually looking for something to jam to on my guitar and I thought this was going to be a Gary Numan type sound; ie, something a bit darker. I was just hackin' on ya' anyway, 'cause I F-ing wailed over it! I just gave it another listen and the middle section is very cool.

  • Ha ha, I can take a good hacking! I definitely have some unorthodox drum recordings! Thanks for watching!

  • Analog.....ALL THE WAY !!!!

  • I want a Yahama CS-80 so bad. Even if I had the money to buy one, the shipping alone would be enormous. Those things are massive. Who is playing this by the way?

  • Yes, I personally have felt that it is better to have a CS-50 and sacrifice a layer of oscillator than it is to deal with the behemoth! The music is a song called "12 watt bulb," which later became a song called "Mine." And, that's me.

  • lmao! the hawaii effect 1:01

  • what's the music type? Which bands sounds like that?

  • cool tune!

  • whats the one thats on about 0:59 to 1:01?

  • Wersi Synth Bass

  • is their anyway/ where to get one?

  • how old is this stuff??

  • None of the synthesizers pictured were made after 1979, except for the modular which was new in 2005.

  • Thank god for Hawaii effect!

Also, what is the name of that grey Roland?

  • SH-3a

  • turn the glide switch on and the oscillator knob all the way up and see what sounds happen...amazing

  • And a Yamaha CS50

  • i have a little CS-5 that's a lot of fun. got it at a garage sale for 5 bucks. he thought it was broken. no, just had it set wrong!

  • i prefer only a keyboard

  • i want a wasp dulux edition

  • How does the old Roland SH-3 sound? I love this video!

  • I LOVE THE MINIMOOG SOUUND !!!!

  • What is the "Hawaii Effect"?

  • A momentary pitch bend on the Wersi Bass Synthesizer.

  • Nice Roland SH-1000 and SH-2000! I have two synths and one workstation. A moog little phatty stage, a Roland SH-201, and a Korg i4S workstation. I wish I had a minimoog model D and a Polymoog synthesizer, or keyboard model. Love This Video!!!

  • Hawaii Effect?

    Do want.

  • Greeeat!!! I love this sound of synth

  • Excellent performance again, AG...

  • Thank you!

  • Stynths!

  • cool synths and cool drums !

  • nice gear!

  • i drooled throughout the whole vid.

    :D :D :D

  • Are you using Sonic Six on that track?

  • Extensively!

  • I have a sonic six coming out of my butt

  • If I had a Sonic Six coming out of my butt, I would be very happy to have one again. (after the initial trauma, that is)

  • *laughs* :)

  • i love this music! where can i hear more like this?

  • The Automatic Gainsay profile on MySpace

  • I don't know my analog synths very well. I recognized one as the Minimoog, but I bet I'm wrong. Check out the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange, best analog work I've ever heard.

  • ok ill give it a try...

    first one obviously minimoog

next i believe korg ms 20

    roland sh1000

    wersi synth

    roland sh2000

    yamaha cs80

the last one ill go out on a limb and say moog modular.... though i cant back that up cause ive never played on a modular so..howd i do?

  • Well, you were in the right neighborhood on a lot of them!

  • hi,im used to reason programme however want to start on analog synths now,on ebay there is a synth ROLAND JP 8080,could u tell me if its worth buying and if not what would i be looking for maybe techno electro...cheers mate

  • Thanks for stopping by! The JP-8080 is an analog modeling synth, and as such, I don't know anything about it. I'm also not that great at matching analog to modern genres! Sorry!

  • oo i see,hmm just gona have do my research b4 i do anything..excellent stuff btw.thanks man

  • no i wouldnt recommend it. if your gonna blow the bucks id get a analog. or if your really interested in something analog but new might checkout creamware, but if your new to the deal maybe a micro x. dont waste your money on a jp though unless its a jupiter.

  • I wouldn't reccomend a micro X either because it's not analog.

There are a lot of things to consider when choosing a synth. Poly or Monophonic is the biggest. Usually you want to get a mono single Osc for bass sounds and a polyphonic for pads and leads. For mono I would recommend the DSI Mopho(newly made synth). It's a brand new synth and it's terrific for bass sounds. For poly I would recommend one of the Roland Juno series. They are vintage, but pretty much one of the standard poly-synths.

  • where do you get analog synths? ive wanted to get one for along time and all i can seem to find is digital stuff.

  • Nearly every analog synth I've ever purchased has been from eBay. It can be a risky venture purchasing them there, though. If you find one on eBay you're interested in, let me know, and I'd be glad to tell you if I think it is worth pursuing.

  • alright, could you reccomend me one? the stuff i want to do is like steve roach and robert rich.

  • Thanks!

  • where can we hear more?

  • check out myspace / automaticgainsay2 for more of his music - it's pretty badass

  • love the music, and love the beauty of analog synthesizers.. they are so.. raw.

  • I want such analog thingies :'-(

  • cool music

  • Thanks!

  • geek pr0n! *drools*

  • Christ... How many synths do you own? I've only got one, and I have to finance it (Nord Lead 2x)!

  • Holy... you even have a CS! That's like.... so not fair. ;-)

  • I want a moog soo bad

  • fucking rad song man, who is that?

  • It's my band, Automatic Gainsay. Thanks!

  • did u make this song? if so, please send a message 2 me. I'd like to know whck synths were used and if it's not too much trouble: what synth was used for What part? Thanx.

  • The bass sound is a Micromoog, all of the ringmoddy parts are a Moog Sonic Six, and the chords are either a Hohner Pianet T or a Roland Jx-3p.

  • oh, And plus, if you release this song, you'll get, a record deal for sure, a HUGE crowd at your concerts, and a number 1 fan: me

Im a huge synthesizer fanatic, bu seeing as tho i dont have a job yet, i only hav a Motif es7 and a korg ms2000. good enough for the job right? anyway, this song would definately kill all other contestants in Battle of the bands.

  • Hey, thanks a lot, Pepe!

  • your very welcome! anything to help out and support other synthesizer fanatics!

  • hi. what's that theme in the beginning of the video? Is it from "Add N to X" maybe?

  • oh, i didn't read the description before. sorry

  • I think I felt the Hawaii effect watching this.... gotta love the analogs.

  • TOMMY MARS ANYONE?

  • so sorry to see this kind of submission. "a boy with his ebay toys" doubled with his acid loop sound track. hey still keep on wishing! x god bless!

  • Nice try, Neil. The "god bless!" was a cute touch. I challenge you to a BATTLE OF THE BANDS!

  • Korg MS-20 in there for sure

  • *drool* analogue synths. I must be in heaven.

  • Dude, I like the song, what is the name of it? Nice video.

  • Thank you very much! It's a song that has seen many versions, and had several names. Currently, and finally, it would be called the instrumental version of a song called "Mine," which will be featured on the upcoming Automatic Gainsay release "Recondite." Thanks again!

  • hawaii effect?

  • Heh, yeah! It basically is the same as a "glide" button on a Roland SH-1000... it drops the pitch about a half-stip when depressed.

  • minimoog, korg PS3100 (or maybe PS3200), Roland SH1000 (2000?), yamaha CS80 (60?), Rolands SH-3a (had one 20 years ago, still wish I hadn't sold it) ... and some strange early additive syntheshis-thingie I havent got a clue too naming - but I WANT ONE!

  • Hey! You got nearly all of them! Close enough! It's a PS-3100, an SH-1000, and a CS-50! One of the unnamed is on another video of mine, and the "additive synthesis thingy" has yet to be guessed... They're more common in Europe, but still pretty uncommon... they usually look different than this one... this one is a kit version!

  • after replying I found out I could see more answers, and read that it was a Wersi. Funny thing is one of my friends/synthjamming mates actually bought a semi-defunkt Wersi recently, but I haven't seen it yet. I had however seen a picture on the web, and it was different, with less cool knobs and switches. Maybe switches & knobs wasn't part of the kit version, so the guy who build yours used some from an organ?

  • Aw, hell, I forgot that I had talked about that. : ) Yep, it's the kit version of the Wersi Bass Synth. The kit used cool rockers instead of the ugly stuff used in the consumer model! Mine needs extensive service, but it kind of works!

  • Minimoog, ARP2600?, Roland SH1000, Yamaha CS80, MOOG Model 15.

Did i get most of them? There was a mystery synth in there.. very wacky.

    Great knobs!

  • You got several of them! No ARP 2600, or Moog modular, though! It's actually a CS-50, I'm not brave enough to have a CS-80. ; ) There are two mystery synths in there... check my other videos and you'll find out what one of them is... : )

  • I am brave enough....For an CS80. :)had 2 of em at one time...just 1 now.

    I also had a Sh1000/JX3P/ArpAxxe/SQ80/ELKA Rhapsody/and Yam CS70M...

  • Dude that is a ninja tune indeed.

And i guess you could classify this as porn

  • I'm not sure what a "ninja tune" is, but I hope it's good! Thanks. : )

As far as this being porn... we're safe, at least momentarily, from YouTube putting a warning before it.

    ; )

  • hehe :p

well now you have learned a new word: NINJA [N1NJ4].

It means cool, good, awsome, stuffs like that and ofcourse it can mean just a regular ninja :P

And btw i really really like your videos. they are indeed ninja.

  • MMmm, instrumentation pornography, got to love it!

    Nice synthesizer muzak too.

  • Heh heh heh... thanks! : )

  • jajaja very funny!!!

  • i worked with a sonic six a while back....found it kind of hard to control...i think it had one oscillator, n'est pas?

  • The Sonic Six has two oscillators! It has a lot of modulation options which makes it a bit wily if you're new to analog, or even if you're not, in some ways! Also, it requires tuning more often than some analog synths! I should be posting my video on the one I had pretty soon!

  • I too am working on moving to London!

  • Hell, I wouldn't mind moving to London! I'm playing in Bath on August 8!

  • Thank you!

Actually, yes... if you're well versed in analog synths and want to relocate to Washington state. : )

  • hehehe, added you to the old www.myspace.com/psalm37 - nah I think you need to move to London and we'll cause a real synth mash up ;)

  • hey that was great - do you need another synth player???? LOL

  • I loved my Jx-3p. I actually have had two of them... I always regret selling them. It's the best polyphonic analog synth for the least amount of money! Plus, it's cool that the DCOs are really VCOs with digital tuning!

  • hey I have a digital moog modular its a synthesizer for Fruity Loops 5

  • Move to hardware, software is a cruel joke.

  • your band sounds freakin sweet

  • Thank you very much!

    www.myspace.com/automaticgainsay2

  • You're hearing drums, a Micromoog, A Moog Sonic Six, a Hohner Pianet, and a Roland Jx-3p.

  • Who's playing? sounds nice!

    Best

  • Automatic Gainsay, my band!

  • arp pro soloist ?

  • I'm afraid not!

  • Automatic...ever heard Add N To (X)? the musik here reminds me of them dearly...

    great band..

    o.sys/j.b.

  • that's not a moog modular - it's a synthesizers.com modular!

  • You're absolutely right! Yay! : )

  • I'm stumped by the one with the white "blender-like" swtiches for what look to be additional footages, sine waves, and a bizzare looking Hawaiian Effect button. What is it? I'm really very curious. Thanks!

  • The organ company Wersi made a brief stint in synthesizer design. One of their offerings was the Wersi Bass Synthesizer. This one looks different, and was said to be a prototype. What it actually is is a kit for the consumer to build. Mine was very obviously built by an amateur as its functionality could best be described as "sporadic." Thanks for your interest!
