It's funny how half these people who leave comments like "loosen the reins" or "that's not how you ride a horse", have never even ridden a horse before. Why else would you be looking up a "How To Ride A Horse" video, if you know how to ride a horse?!
Not to be mean, but you really need to work on your canter. It looked like your trying to post or something. Your butt should be on the saddle, like glue is on your breaches or jeans.
ive never ridden a horse before nor getting close to one. ive only see them in movies stuffs. i watch this just in case theres emergencies, no cars, and theres only a horse available. lol just in case. i find this video is very helpful.now i think i know how to ride and handle the reins. thank you.
Hey, can anyone answer my question please? If it's your first ever horse riding lesson is the instructor allowed to make you ride the horse by yourself or does he always have to hold the rope?
What a beautiful horse, great head and connection to the rider, she probably just needs to work on keeping her legs tighter and seat tighter to not bounce too much, if you take your feet out of the stirrups and sit deep in the saddle it will force you to keep the proper seat when in a canter or sitting trot. Other than that I think they looked like they where enjoying each others company.
first of all in the canter you should not be doing up and down instead sitting down following the horse movement your hips and your back follow the horse so back and foward that movement you shouldnt notice it alot but you should be able to see the movement this could be explain much better in spanish my English is not that good maybe u miss understand me or get the wrong idea
I have had horse's over 30 years. People are so over the top really! STOP was there a time when you learned to ride? Remember how terrible you was? This young lady has a good seat, under great instuction and safe. I remember a time when I went to GRIFFITH PARK in CA. I had a BLM stud a fantastic horse but a mustang mutt. People was horrible I hated it. I am sorry but my horses cost me as much to keep as anyone elses. And are better trained than most. I hate horse snobs and know it alls.
the horse is beautiful and well behaved but it goes under the left and it is unhealthy for the horse! it is wrong as the rider makes the horse but yes the horse is beautiful
@purplejumpergirl ah i'm so sorry i didn't realise you were older than me! please forgive me :( i shouldn't have "picked a fight" with a person five years older than me! and are you american? the tests and staging is different over there i think, and B or whatever it is is the smae as C+ from what i've heard. from what i've seen 3ft 6 open cross country is pretty good for my age, and i'm not saying i'm the best rider, but i'm not the worst, either.
@purplejumpergirl oh please you're resorting to swearing? don't worry, i've been there, too. when you're just so angry you feel you have to swear. i used to be like that, too, when i was about eight. i have probably had WAYYY more riding experience than you, i got my first pony when i was three and i'm now then so that makes me have 7 years of experience straight off, and i've passed my pony club C+ test, which most people pass at age 13-15. daddy says i'm too young to post vids, so sorry.
These comments are cruel -- I wonder how a video can inspire so much rancor from these viewers? The language, alone, is foul and without good manners.
@elizabethlaborde You're right. It's because internet is open for kids. And kids say "cruel" things. Kindergarten manners. I think the net or at least Youtube should be from 18 years up. We would have 99% of hate and troll messages reduced, what do you think?

You mean "How to ride a horse if you're a moron and your trainer is a self-important douchebag." Beautiful horse, love to see him under a PROPER rider unlike these two morons portrayed here. Body entirely too stiff, too tight on the reins and what is up with the leg positions? And THIS is why I don't let people ride my horse - dorks like this would ruin a horse and their mouth in no time flat.
Relax bud, Let your arms flow in the movement of the horses neck. If you dont the horse pays for is by having a sore mouth :( I dont know what you're trying to do, wether is tucking the head, or what. Target your pinky fingers and the horse will tuck. (if its trained to) Ease up on the reins.
Wow...I've never ridden a horse in my life but even I can tell that she's pulling too hard on the reins. It's kind of hard to miss the poor guy trying to get the bit out :(
And the rider looks really..."floppy" in the saddle.
I hate it when I find videos like this. I'm trying to do research for a story I'm writing but I'm too poor to afford lessons so I can't learn it first hand.
Holy smokes, this chick is stiffer than a 2x4!!!! Relax the reins, you're gonna make that horse so hard on the bit it'll hate being ridden at all! And please, for the love of all that is holy, learn how to sit properly at the canter! You're slamming down on the horse's back just as it's rising upward. You're going to damage that poor animal. And to the "trainer", PLEASE RETIRE!!!
heels? really? your transition upwards should be from your seat and aided by your lower leg/heels. if someone had no idea how to ride, this video would insinuate that one digs their spurred heels into the horses ribs in asking for upward transitions. good god who funded these poor videos?
y does everything have to be so proper???? i feel sorry for horses that get rode like that. also ease up on the reins you dont need to keep pulling back after your horse has stopped.
@Gleeky613 i agree! i dont ride with a saddle, bridle, any proper gear i just go at it natural and its a more amazing experience then this stuff! This lady is clearly taught to ride as you said in a proper way and not move with the horse
@95horselover95 i agree. i ride english saddle seat but our barn is very laid back and when we think its to hot out or too cold to use type of tack we just go bareback. Not only is it a great experience but like you said it helps u to learn to actually move with horse. There for a happy horse and rider. That rider looked like she wasnt even having fun. If she isnt the horse isn't
but i just cant understand how people want to teach you how to ride a) in theorie, out of a video, even if you never have sit on a horse before and b) in 4 minutes!
Ive learned my whole live how to ride and to undestand what the horse is saying to me, and i will have 2 learn much more!
really need to get out of his mouth. shaking his head and pawing is telling you, "Hey i'm annoyed your hurting me and get out of my mouth or BACK OFF!" Even with my gelding, whose has just been recently gelded and is still studdy, umm i don't have to get into his mouth that much. WOW
guys , get over yourselfs its a simple demonstration , oviously ur not gonna go buy a horse and jump on and say youtube taught me how to ride a horse, no your not your gonna need training, its just a rough demonstration nothing experienced , leave her alone.
Saturday is going to be the first day I ride a horse by myself and even I know thats not how you have ur elbows that poor hourse and shes plopping down on that saddle fast and hard....
the only way to really learn how to ride a horse correctly is by actually RIDING and taking lessons from a trainer. That's the most effective way at least.
That and screw off English riders with your humpy thing that you do on the horse. Western is the bomb. That and Australian. If you ask me, English is kinda for pussies
@Calaxus how so? we only have mane to grab onto if needed...you have a horn.also most of our gaits are at a faster speed...we trot normally none of that jogging stuff also, our canter is a canter not a lope..yes western is nice i enjoy it but you cant jump western the saddle is too heavy and will hurt their back..both english and western are challenging but there are ways in which both are easier than the other. so dont call us "pussies" because its not true. but thats my opinion
You cant rely on this video to teach students how to learn. Every horse and rider are different and not every horse can be "slightly kicked". Some horses with the slightest kick will go flat out because that has how they have been trained. So what I am saying is that this video make totally no sense.
they say they want a horse with the right energy and temperment and that horse looks pretty mad to me...you can tell hos ears keep flicking back and forth and pinning them back and her heels arent down and that horse is swishing his tail so he's pretty mad 2 me...take a better look before you choose your "perfect" rider for a video next time lady...and she's bouncing in her seat especially in the canter and plopping on the horses back

good posture? shes not in balance because she is doing a hollow back, the torso isn't in the correct "line of balance". horrible seat and spurs. GREAT !
The horse IS obviously agitated. Most people let their horses have a little slack when they're just sitting there like that. Maybe she didn't want the horse moving at all during the videos, but maybe he actually would've been more still if she would have given him some slack.
wooooow that vid is a fail!!!your PULLING on the reins and your jumpin up and down out of nowhere YOUR NOT EVEN DOING IT WITH THE HORSE!!!and the fat lady in the front telling u how 2 ''properly'' ride a horse dosnt even care that she is doing it COMPLETELY wrong!!
the rider doesnt even match what the lady says! the line through the ear, hip and heel only stayed there for halt and walk! the trot and canter was all wrong with her leaning foward and her leg moving all over the place!! and your supposed to sit deap into th saddle in canter when schooling.
Wow, you'd better talk fast if you want to teach this in under 4 minutes!
The rider needs readjustment. Her back is so arched and she's riding too far forward on her seatbones. The horse will never become supple or engage with her seat even though she is very slight. I think his protests, flatness and tail swishing comes from this.
oh and i forgot...you DONT get up in the saddle while cantering. you only do this if you want to jump the horse....geezus...this video is really wrong...folks, go and see a good trainer in your next local riding club. DONT try to learn from this video because most of it is wrong...for the horse's sake, please dont try this at home.
lol the girl sits on the horse like a duck with her butt sticking out...no tension at all.....the lady is explaining the dressage seat at first, but THIS is a jumper's seat!! and the horse's head is also in a bad position...he isn't chewing on the bit either.
wtf, do not flaunt it run, how to sit in a trot and canter, as in the gallop, said is really weird, you should sit back and not forward .. learning to teach first, before you put videos on youtube.

good teacher, bad pupil! whats up with ur hands all the time?? it don´t looks like riding :D greetings from germany, where the best horses and riders come from :P
@CheeseCakeExtreme I agree that her foot isn't placed correctly, but she is taking a light seat which is what most jumpers do in in between fences so as not to interfere with the horses back.
@RariiRetard she is probably doing gallop.. galop and canter have different postures even though it is same movement of horse. In galop you rise up a bit and you are more 'forwards' lets say, maintaining your balance of course...it is the posture riders take when they jump an obsticle. Canter is the one where you just sit back and remain on the sit. Canter is supposed to be slower to allow you to remain on your sit and not bounce. Galop is more fast and therefore rider rises slightly.
@TheRacedaz72 Ok, then I'll sit on you and whip you like a horse? Would you- actually if your perverted like me MOVING ON - like it? how do you think the horse feels?
@CheeseCakeExtreme the reason why i said sit on it and whip it was to take the piss out of horse riders coz thats what they do i dint say i would do that coz i wouldnt, i dont hate animals you see
as i can see, this is if you're going to jump, not if you're going to do dressage, because then your legs should be more straight and you should sit down in the saddle for canter. (sorry for my bad english, i'm only 14 and from Denmark)
as i can see, this is if you're going to jump, not if you're going to do dressage, because then your legs should be more straight and you should sit down in the saddle. (sorry for my bad english, i'm only 14 and from Denmark)
Um wow she should probably stop pulling on the rains cuz that horse is aggitated or they should get a new bit because he really doesn't like that. This lady doesn't really explain things well and i don't like the rider. It also depends on what the horse wants and how the horse is set and how it walks not on how YOU sit. I don't like when people teach like this. Just expierament with your horse see what it likes, how they work don't watcha video because every horse is different just like humans.
i do hope nobody who does not know how to ride watches this, and thinks they can do it. there is soooo much more to riding than this video. nice to watch, and get an idea by, but not to ride by. the best way to learn to ride, is hands on, with an experienced trainer.
at 1:48 she pulls really hard on the poor things mouth. Yeah, she probably should be sitting down a bit more in the saddle. Her hands and legs are also a bit wobbily. But I understand this was nearly 3 years ago. She has probably improved since then.
thumbs up if u think she's pulling too tight on the reins...poor horsie...his head was like, wayy pulled back in dat position...it looked pretty tight

you drive the horse forward with your lower part of your legs, hips and voice.. all of those movements have got to be invisible..

Kitkat7ful 7 months ago
I'm sorry, and I'll probably get -so- much hate for saying this, but I see WAY too many h/j riders that ride like this.

i cant stand english riding! that style is just soo uptight. you have to be sooo perfect. Western seems more relaxed and not so rulefull
imakevideosfunny 8 months ago
it isnt a bad video.
but i just cant understand how people want to teach you how to ride a) in theorie, out of a video, even if you never have sit on a horse before and b) in 4 minutes!
Ive learned my whole live how to ride and to undestand what the horse is saying to me, and i will have 2 learn much more!
But not so bad at all.
And please excuse my english!
Aloxhon 8 months ago
really need to get out of his mouth. shaking his head and pawing is telling you, "Hey i'm annoyed your hurting me and get out of my mouth or BACK OFF!" Even with my gelding, whose has just been recently gelded and is still studdy, umm i don't have to get into his mouth that much. WOW
TheSassiLady 8 months ago
GIve a little slack on the reins girl!! Clearly that horse is annoyed!

guys , get over yourselfs its a simple demonstration , oviously ur not gonna go buy a horse and jump on and say youtube taught me how to ride a horse, no your not your gonna need training, its just a rough demonstration nothing experienced , leave her alone.
EatskittlesSLhillary 8 months ago
It's baffling to me that this is an instructional video. She is such a fail of a rider. And why the spurs? There should be no reason for spurs.
Nejjidragon 8 months ago
Hahha, fail. You're not supposed to leave the saddle in canter..

@aaLuvUggsayMalone aha her stirrups are jumping length, duh

@aaLuvUggsayMalone if the horse is not warmed up you're ment to, otherwise you will hurt his back

@Thatkidwithguns Why would you be cantering if the horse isn't warmed up? That's what's gonna hurt his back...

Saturday is going to be the first day I ride a horse by myself and even I know thats not how you have ur elbows that poor hourse and shes plopping down on that saddle fast and hard....
justinbieberlov10 8 months ago
the only way to really learn how to ride a horse correctly is by actually RIDING and taking lessons from a trainer. That's the most effective way at least.
jeweleannaaa 8 months ago
The rider has nice legs...
That and screw off English riders with your humpy thing that you do on the horse. Western is the bomb. That and Australian. If you ask me, English is kinda for pussies
Calaxus 8 months ago
@Calaxus Im just now starting and im doing Western.. which is awesome..
justinbieberlov10 8 months ago
@Calaxus how so? we only have mane to grab onto if needed...you have a horn.also most of our gaits are at a faster speed...we trot normally none of that jogging stuff also, our canter is a canter not a lope..yes western is nice i enjoy it but you cant jump western the saddle is too heavy and will hurt their back..both english and western are challenging but there are ways in which both are easier than the other. so dont call us "pussies" because its not true. but thats my opinion
xomgitskelseyxo 8 months ago
You cant rely on this video to teach students how to learn. Every horse and rider are different and not every horse can be "slightly kicked". Some horses with the slightest kick will go flat out because that has how they have been trained. So what I am saying is that this video make totally no sense.

they say they want a horse with the right energy and temperment and that horse looks pretty mad to me...you can tell hos ears keep flicking back and forth and pinning them back and her heels arent down and that horse is swishing his tail so he's pretty mad 2 me...take a better look before you choose your "perfect" rider for a video next time lady...and she's bouncing in her seat especially in the canter and plopping on the horses back

kaykayboo101 9 months ago
The horse IS obviously agitated. Most people let their horses have a little slack when they're just sitting there like that. Maybe she didn't want the horse moving at all during the videos, but maybe he actually would've been more still if she would have given him some slack.

wooooow that vid is a fail!!!your PULLING on the reins and your jumpin up and down out of nowhere YOUR NOT EVEN DOING IT WITH THE HORSE!!!and the fat lady in the front telling u how 2 ''properly'' ride a horse dosnt even care that she is doing it COMPLETELY wrong!!
AnimeRocks245 10 months ago
she can not ride. maybe jump...
GIRLz4eva 10 months ago
OMG stop pulling the reins when in the first part no wonder the horse wouldnt stop moving its head youi could see the bit pulling back!!!!!!
supabug98 10 months ago
the rider doesnt even match what the lady says! the line through the ear, hip and heel only stayed there for halt and walk! the trot and canter was all wrong with her leaning foward and her leg moving all over the place!! and your supposed to sit deap into th saddle in canter when schooling.
BethanHorseMad 10 months ago
Wow, you'd better talk fast if you want to teach this in under 4 minutes!
The rider needs readjustment. Her back is so arched and she's riding too far forward on her seatbones. The horse will never become supple or engage with her seat even though she is very slight. I think his protests, flatness and tail swishing comes from this.
powerinknowing 11 months ago
thanks !
Ascottie29 11 months ago
It doesn't seem like the rider's hips are moving WITH the horse. She looks like she is just bouncing up and down.

oh and i forgot...you DONT get up in the saddle while cantering. you only do this if you want to jump the horse....geezus...this video is really wrong...folks, go and see a good trainer in your next local riding club. DONT try to learn from this video because most of it is wrong...for the horse's sake, please dont try this at home.
schneggilein89 11 months ago
lol the girl sits on the horse like a duck with her butt sticking out...no tension at all.....the lady is explaining the dressage seat at first, but THIS is a jumper's seat!! and the horse's head is also in a bad position...he isn't chewing on the bit either.
THIS is how NOT to ride a horse....!!!

Ok He dislikes the bit, She isn't sitting straight she's leaning forward the ball of your foot isn't in the correct spot and you clearly suck!
CheeseCakeExtreme 11 months ago
@CheeseCakeExtreme I agree that her foot isn't placed correctly, but she is taking a light seat which is what most jumpers do in in between fences so as not to interfere with the horses back.

thumbs up if you think the rider is hot
The007ricardo 11 months ago
The rider's WAY too stiff.
SkrGreenLeaf 11 months ago
she's leaning way to much forwards in canter, also she should loosen up on the reins while cantering
RariiRetard 11 months ago
@RariiRetard she is probably doing gallop.. galop and canter have different postures even though it is same movement of horse. In galop you rise up a bit and you are more 'forwards' lets say, maintaining your balance of course...it is the posture riders take when they jump an obsticle. Canter is the one where you just sit back and remain on the sit. Canter is supposed to be slower to allow you to remain on your sit and not bounce. Galop is more fast and therefore rider rises slightly.

how to ride a horse.... sit on it and whip it!
TheRacedaz72 11 months ago
@TheRacedaz72 Ok, then I'll sit on you and whip you like a horse? Would you- actually if your perverted like me MOVING ON - like it? how do you think the horse feels?
CheeseCakeExtreme 11 months ago
@CheeseCakeExtreme the reason why i said sit on it and whip it was to take the piss out of horse riders coz thats what they do i dint say i would do that coz i wouldnt, i dont hate animals you see

as i can see, this is if you're going to jump, not if you're going to do dressage, because then your legs should be more straight and you should sit down in the saddle for canter. (sorry for my bad english, i'm only 14 and from Denmark)

when your horse releases, and puts slack in the reins, you dont keep pulling! you let go! some people need to grow brains.
Elena638 1 year ago
Um wow she should probably stop pulling on the rains cuz that horse is aggitated or they should get a new bit because he really doesn't like that. This lady doesn't really explain things well and i don't like the rider. It also depends on what the horse wants and how the horse is set and how it walks not on how YOU sit. I don't like when people teach like this. Just expierament with your horse see what it likes, how they work don't watcha video because every horse is different just like humans.
TheSwEaTtHiNg 1 year ago
i do hope nobody who does not know how to ride watches this, and thinks they can do it. there is soooo much more to riding than this video. nice to watch, and get an idea by, but not to ride by. the best way to learn to ride, is hands on, with an experienced trainer.
zoedj 1 year ago
at 1:48 she pulls really hard on the poor things mouth. Yeah, she probably should be sitting down a bit more in the saddle. Her hands and legs are also a bit wobbily. But I understand this was nearly 3 years ago. She has probably improved since then.
