But, the wealthy have more money to spend...so they can afford to pay higher taxes. I guess the people who benefited the most from this country, have a duty to give some back. A 2007 study showed that Americans in the bottom 50% only own 2.5% of the U.S wealth. While the top 90%-100% contained about 70 percent of us wealth.

@Marglar7 When all is said and done, at the end of the year I have paid about 60% in taxes between federal, state and local which is just income, property, and school taxes. THEN after that, there's sales tax, electricity tax, phone tax, oil tax, car tax, luxury tax, tobacco tax, gas tax.. the list goes on and on. I don't believe everyone should have the same income, but how is it beneficial for 5% of Americans to have wayyyy more money than they need while 20% of Americans don't have enough to afford basic necessities? Even taxed more, if you're making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year you will be able to afford a ton of luxuries. But that bit of extra tax helps a larger amount of Americans who make less just be okay.

So who would be getting at least enough if that happens? No one. It's just to punish productivity.

You don't know what people's obligations are and what they pay for with their money that THEY earn. I'll use my friend as an example for this: She and her husband earn about 300k a year. After taxes (local, state and fed) they are left with about 120k. 10k a month sounds like a lot until you pay for her mom's nursing care and then her grandma's nursing care. That then drops to about 5500.

They're a family of 4, NEVER eat out but her food bill is about $1200 a month. 2100 left. Electricity and phones are about 700 (they live in extreme heat and cold). Down to 1400. One kid is in preschool which is 800. Left with 600. No car payments. $150 a week left. Is that "wayyyy more money than they need"?

The demand curve for plumbing is extremely inelastic. No one will pay more for plumbing if they have lower taxes. No amount of tax decrease would change people's want for plumbing. Obama's bottom up theory does not work if people are willing to pay virtually any price for a good. His plan would theoretically assist businesses in non-necessity markets such as restaurants and movie theaters etc.

@ryancicocki When the banks started crashing and the wide scale corruption began (during GW's administration a record number of corporate crimes occured) it created our nation's current unemployment problem. Majority of the unemployed had jobs until this occured and there's no jobs to be had because of it. The bank bailout was a huge mistake that didn't help at all. All it did was allow the banking industry to continue doing the shady shit that lead to the problems.
My largest problem with Joe the "Plumber" is that he lied. When interviewed he was making approx $40,000. That means none of the stuff Obama was talking about applied to him. I'm nowhere near the $250,000 mark and I write off everything I can. It only costs a couple hundred dollars to incorporate and start to use the tax laws to your benefit.

Up until the early 70s the rich had 90% of their income taxed and they were still the rich. Granted maybe giving tax breaks to people making up to $500,000 would be alright (you have a valid point). Someone should explain the difference between gross and net to Mr. The Plumber. I doubt his plumbing business nets "250, 270, 280 thousand dollars a year" but it's conceivable it grosses that amount. You're not taxed on the gross, otherwise most businesses would end up owing more in taxes than their profits. Republican politicians pretending not to understand this simple idea is very telling.

@bferg531 I think that statement makes sense. But, the problem is that low income families would be hurt more by taxs than helped. I dont like this situation either. But, the wealthy have more money to spend...so they can afford to pay higher taxes. I guess the people who benefited the most from this country, have a duty to give some back. A 2007 study showed that Americans in the bottom 50% only own 2.5% of the U.S wealth. While the top 90%-100% contained about 70 percent of us wealth.

THEN after that, there's sales tax, electricity tax, phone tax, oil tax, car tax, luxury tax, tobacco tax, gas tax.. the list goes on and on. So I get to keep 40 cents for every dollar THEN pay taxes on everything else. Maybe I should have said the guy at the ATM takes 80% to help out? LOL

I don't believe everyone should have the same income, but how is it beneficial for 5% of Americans to have wayyyy more money than they need while 20% of Americans don't have enough to afford basic necessities? Even taxed more, if you're making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year you will be able to afford a ton of luxuries. But that bit of extra tax helps a larger amount of Americans who make less just be okay.

That means that JUST BECAUSE you earned more money you'll be taxed. It's not going to HELP anyone because revenue is lower when capital gains tax is higher. So who would be getting at least enough if that happens? No one. It's just to punish productivity.

You don't know what people's obligations are and what they pay for with their money that THEY earn. I'll use my friend as an example for this: She and her husband earn about 300k a year. After taxes (local, state and fed) they are left with about 120k. 10k a month sounds like a lot until you pay for her mom's nursing care and then her grandma's nursing care. That then drops to about 5500.

They're a family of 4, NEVER eat out but her food bill is about $1200 a month. 2100 left. Electricity and phones are about 700 (they live in extreme heat and cold). Down to 1400. One kid is in preschool which is 800. Left with 600. No car payments. $150 a week left. Is that "wayyyy more money than they need"?

The way I see it, Joe is right in thinking that 'the american dream' is to work hard and grow in success and wealth and live comfortably. However, Obama sees the world more realistically and he sees that not everyone can achieve the american dream. There just isn't enough money to go around for everyone. The demand curve for plumbing is extremely inelastic. No one will pay more for plumbing if they have lower taxes. No amount of tax decrease would change people's want for plumbing. Obama's bottom up theory does not work if people are willing to pay virtually any price for a good. His plan would theoretically assist businesses in non-necessity markets such as restaurants and movie theaters etc.

I forget what the number are but last I checked 2/3 of our GDP (how much money the country makes off of taxes) was spent on social programs. @ryancicocki When the banks started crashing and the wide scale corruption began (during GW's administration a record number of corporate crimes occured) it created our nation's current unemployment problem. Majority of the unemployed had jobs until this occured and there's no jobs to be had because of it. The bank bailout was a huge mistake that didn't help at all. All it did was allow the banking industry to continue doing the shady shit that lead to the problems.

My largest problem with Joe the "Plumber" is that he lied. When interviewed he was making approx $40,000. That means none of the stuff Obama was talking about applied to him. Interesting how the Plumber union backed Obama. Joe is not the common man. He quickly cashed in on his new found fame (guest speaking, etc). If anything he owes Obama for his increase in wealth.

Joe the Plumber is a very common man, and I'm glad that he was there. I am a die hard Republican and with this new tax plan it makes me even more of one. I shouldn't have to raide my taxes to pay for other people and welfare families. The one's that abuse it rather. I have no problem with welfare or poor families, but when you choose to be lazy, and not work because you are receiving my money, then I have a big problem. Wealth distrubution is foolish. If I make my OWN money then its my MONEY.

@abrnt1 So poor people pay more than 39%? I doubt that. The bottom few percent actually receive money instead of paying in. Anyone can use tax codes to their advantage. I'm nowhere near the $250,000 mark and I write off everything I can. It only costs a couple hundred dollars to incorporate and start to use the tax laws to your benefit.

@cleatusjr Again why should the rich get a better tax break? GW pushed this through and it's been the cause of numerous problems. Up until the early 70s the rich had 90% of their income taxed and they were still the rich. Granted maybe giving tax breaks to people making up to $500,000 would be alright (you have a valid point). The real problem is the minority who make the really large sums (if you make over a million why do you need a tax break?).

@abrnt1 So does that mean you're ok with a 90% tax on the rich? Imagine if some day you finally come up with some amazing product or idea and you get a check for say $5,000,000. Now you can pay off your parents house, buy your own, and send your kids to college. Not if you have to give 90% to the government who will keep some, waste a lot, give some to leeches, and finally give some to those who truly need it. Why not keep all 5 million and help people by choice?

@cleatusjr my point is someone who's rich should pay more in taxes. that's the no brainer. there's a couple millionaires who have recently spoken out against the tax break. one mentioned his secretary pays a higher percentage in taxes than he does. that's where the problem is. Nobody is saying a business owner doesn't have the right to do what they want, but if they r getting large tax breaks they shouldn't screw the people who work for them.
