..or you could even go more fundamental and say become sensitive to the vibes your heart is giving of,, become aware of your inner(world)before you cling on to outer world(illusionary)beliefs.
as children , and well into the teen years, we are all conditioned and are not free.
some people get good conditioning, but most people don't .
once a person gets to be an adult, if they are in a fairly open environment they will begin to form their own free will.
the difference between the oppressed mentality and the "individualist" mentality is that the individualists believe in their power to change their lives.
I look at it this way, I dont like being told how to live or whats moral or not. Thats why I given up on christianity do to the lack of autonomy and being told how to live.
Real democracy will never happen on a large scale, maybe it can on a municipal scale. But fact is, for society to progress, there needs to be classes, you need to have people in command and people obeying. All civilizations realize this, even "communist" nations such as the Soviet Union and Maoist China realized that. You cannot have a completely equal society and have civilization at the same time.
By the way, I think Aristotle talked about one kind of justice being that everyone should have access to the goods and benefits of the society. Unfortunately, he also believed in slavery and described slaves as "human tools."
It is a difficult question. Will there come a time in the future when humanity looks back at our eating of animals and condemns us? And will some defend us by saying that we were just the product of our time?
Thanks I got a few new ideas from yr talk- eg each is born into a particular family and thus socio-politial-ecominic context and thus a high % of thoughts are determined at birth..

these are but few of the many ways humans can "raise their consciousness".
Your mode may be intellectual, but it's also true that experiencing Universal Consciousness can be a fantastic counterweight for a tendency to abstract and intellectualize simple human life.
I meditate too, but this wasn't the comnment I was going to make. I hope that you are meditating on the warmth of the sun and it brings warmth to you.:)
I'll come back to another day for the comments that I haven't yet made. I;m trying to track down a quote. I move slowly, sometimes as slow as a snail.:)
Yes and sometimes meditation leads to a senses of oneness that one strives to honour in one's practical life. I think Gandhi serves as an example here and slso possibly Einstein. I'll explain the Einstein reference

Capitalism has a way of bringing out even more greed and competition from a society then what you would usually see.
You can see when people are disconnected from mainstream society or people who have been sick enough to see its all bullshit change into better more caring people.
