I've been told that triangles are extremely bad to have in a model that is animated due to artifacts. do you go back and get rid of the ones you've left in the face and all?
Hey dude, how come you don't have your 'Shop reference for this model on your DeviantArt account? It looks pretty good--kind of has a Jet Force Gemini quality to it. I get it if your worried about people copying your refs, but there's not much that weasels can do with small dimensions...FYI (like you haven't figured that out).
How do you make it so the symmetry is visible, when you are in the editable mesh.
When i select editable mesh, the symmetry is doesn't show up in the view port, but the changes made to the mesh will be affected by the symmetry. However if i make another edit mesh modifier above the symmetry modifier , the symmetry is visible, which is good but unfortunately non of the changes made that way are symmetrical..
@Boardslide270 the method he's displaying is ten times better than box modeling for this kind of thing, ive always felt box modeling is good for making inanimate objects but thats just my preference
Thank you for your kind reply, so if I get a regular jpeg or a self made pic I start modeling them in 3d Max the way you say and I can animate them? By working with curves, and other features I can create a model that will look exactly like myself in the pic, realistic 100% please?
@asderso A biped isnt intended for actual use in modeling, its only there for the skeleton of a character so you can rig them, basicly be able to move them so they can be animated for whichever need
Modeling and Animation are both part of the 3D software.
To make something like a human, it requires time and effort plus dedication, then animating it is a whole other ball game which someone who enjoys modeling may not enjoy animating
True words Anthony, well... I enjoy the idea of animating so I'll learn. So any google jpeg pic or any personal camera taken pic can be modeled and animated into a 3d soft, please?
@PlayerOblivion Once your sure the model is in a finished state ready for Zbrush w/e, you right click the symmetry modifier and choose collapse all, this will then make both sides editable and one object, i recommend you make a back up file incase you noticed something that needed fixing otherwise you may come into some problems. Hope this helped
where did you learn to do this was it at a video game college or did you teach yourself and where do you suggest i start if i want to be able to do this as well as you
excellent tutorial! i have a question; how much time do you devote to projects like these, and do personal projects take more time than profesional ones?
how good are you at skeletons? This is a great model and i was wanting to know how your skeleton skills are, I've been rendering models for about 7 years now, but never really got into skeletons :P
Sorry, this isn't really a 'follow along' type tutorial, you'll have to find your own refs. If you can't find what your looking for online, you can always grab a friend and your camera and make some of your own!
I've been doing plane modeling for about 14 months. But now in my character modeling
class they want me to model my character I was going to use box in replacement to my old method of madness(planes^^). Thank god i saw this video. I would have model the whole character with a box and been left over with way to much poly removal as an after job, wish I wanted to avoid a bit. Thanks again man keep up the good tutorials.
yeah, all box modeling is a pain IMO. It would be worth trying it out though. The more tricks you know, the better a modeler you'll be, even if you choose not to use to them. Never stop learning, that's the best advice I can give :p New tutorials soon, I promise.
right click in the empty area in the top part of the max UI (an easy place that is almost always there is the small gray gap to the right of the hammer icon) and select 'reactor' to make the toolbar appear. I hope that answers your question.
hi there love your work I am a modeler and animator myself can you tell me the best way to model a female is it just extruding a plane and using references or a cylinder I see you use the extrude edge is that the best way... thanks
One of the benefits of strip modeling (one of the reasons I like it) is you have very deliberate control of your edgeflow. Mesh cleanup is much easier when modeling this way, but the actually modeling process can take longer then box modeling.
There are many different methods for modeling a character. It is truly a matter of opinion. A strip modeling approach works best for me, but if box modeling out a primitive works best for you, by all means do that. Try them all out then decide!
how do u connect 2 objects so they become 1? for example if you have a head and a torso as 2 objects how do u connect them? Ive been trying to attach the 2 objects then target weld but it wont let me, any ideas?
If you modeled the two pieces as separate objects, you must attach one to the other. Just pick one of the objects, make sure it's an editable poly, then in the modify panel find the 'attach' tool. You can select an object to attach, or attach by name. Once you have done this, the attached object will become a sub-object and the verticies can be welded. Let me know if your still having problems.
yeah thats what ive been doing attaching them and trying to target weld the verts, but when i click on the vert to weld nothing happens, i always seem to have problems when welding, theres always one part that just wont weld i dunno what it is :S thx for the quick reply btw. im rewatching your vids again lol hopefully see were i went wrong with my last face lol
If it wasn't something simple like that, there could be a few other reasons that are a bit more complicated to resolve. First, make sure you don't have 2 vertices occupying the exact same space. The easy way to test that is to click-drag out a selection box just over the vertice (Make sure ignore backfacing is on) and see if it says "2 Vertices selected" instead of "Vertex #### Selected". If that's not it, it could have to do with welding vertices with opposite normals... Damn I'm out of room
.... Continued from last message. The idea is that you can't weld a polygon facing one way to a polygon facing the opposite way, It just won't let you do it. You can try selecting one of the polygons and flipping it (Literally the Flip tool) and trying again. The last thing I can think of is that you are somehow not using the target weld tool properly somehow. Try selecting the two vertices you want to weld and using the Connect tool.
ok well you have give me alot of things to think about next time somthing wont weld, i used to use to connect tool all the time lol but i started using maya for a while and came back to max so i forgot alot of what the tools do, anyway thx for your advice you have been very helpfull :D
lmao!!!!! omg!!! i just figured out why it wouldnt weld lol haha man im so dumb somtimes, ok so the object i was trying to weld to (the neck) was capped... so there was no open vertext to weld lol man..thats funny lol
ya know i never thought to check if there was 2 verts in the same spot, but if there was wouldnt the weld tool just weld it to the one on top anyway? and i dunno what the opposite normals thing is so it could be lol man im so sick of my mesh being suck a god damn mess lol
Sometimes it will still weld, sometimes it will weld to the wrong vertex (smoothing error), sometimes it won't weld at all (Illegal vertex). An easy way to find and fix the overlapping vertex problem is to use the Weld tool (select the box next to it to get the dialog box) and set the threshold to something really low (0.01). You can just use 0 but sometimes the vertex is very close, but not in EXACTLY the same place, and this takes care of that. Then observe the before and after number.
I'm a blender3d-user and have been for a while. But I've basically exhausted all of the tutorials for blender 3d. I have started looking at tutorials for other program while trying to learn my own. I've got to say, this one is really helpful! Thanks for uploading!

i just love your videos man, the model is looking awesome, and the method you use is the method i feel more confortable with also...i´ve tried box modeling but is not working for me.
Your videos are helping me understand a little bit more how edges have to flow on organic forms, i´ve started using max only a couple of weeks ago, and you are a big help!
Just learned about 3d studio from finding your videos and I think although I'm 14 I can learn and get good with this program. What I want to know though is can the models created in this program be animated using this program?
Yes, 3D Studio Max has a robust and full featured suite of professional animation tools. They aren't quite as user friendly as Maya's, but they are fully capable of the same results. It is a daunting task to try and learn animation as well, but I wish you the best of luck!
when you create a polygon by extruding an edge, everything is already welded together. No additional work needed after. The same with using the cap or create tool. When you create a polygon with the create tool, be very careful to select each vertice for the polygon you are creating and no welding will be necessary.
I got it, but if you have two separate (polygon)stripes running (e.g. parallel) to something do you weld them right away or after und finish the model, because I cannot see it in the tutorial.
If I have two elements that are right next to each other and need to be welded together, I'll usually go ahead and weld them together right away. It's too easy to forget about something if you move on so it's best to complete it right away. If they are parallel but have a large space between them, I would probably create new polygons to fill the gap, instead of welding them and stretching out the polygons I've made. I hope this answers your question, if not please try to elaborate.
Very nice job, I really love you work. It would be just perfect if you really bring a basic tutorial in witch you show the techniques in detail, that you use to model your charaters in your superspeed videos ;)
That tutorial about the basic stripmodeling would be very very usefull. I'm 14 and messing around with 3DS Max, I like it a lot but I'm not very good at it yet.

You can use the Cap tool in border mode, or you can just use the create tool in polygon mode.

when you create a polygon by extruding an edge, everything is already welded together. No additional work needed after. The same with using the cap or create tool. When you create a polygon with the create tool, be very careful to select each vertice for the polygon you are creating and no welding will be necessary.
