you guys are so ignorant and possibly illiterate... the video is about the dominance of certain markets around the world by ethnic minorities in those countries, nothing about parenting. anyways I found this really interesting
Also, judging from the fact that successful chinese women almost never marry other chinese men, this tells me that chinese people are very aware of the fact that western society is greatly superior. It tells me that the chinese are a self-hating people and strongly envy America to the point of worship. This is why America will always remain on top, despite our economic troubles. China's mindset is like that of an overcompensating child
China only leads due to the sheer size of their nation. The educational style she espouses as "superior" leads to a nation of sheep, high discipline robots that can make quick calculations devoid of critical thinking or innovation. This is why Americans and the west will always be one step ahead and China is reduced to reverse engineering and imitating every aspect of western culture in order to maintain their wealth. They depend us, and they will always remain inferior despite nowadays fears
Apparently she thinks that she has taught her daughters well. Do they know how to suck my big johnson Asian style? Have they been taught "Me love you long time?"
what are those idiots talking about her another book 'tiger mom' in this video which is on totally different subject? get a fuckin grip you retards. go fucking chatting asian mommy's education style or something blah blah useless idiotic shit.
As a young asian myself I will make sure the next generation of Asian Americans destroys, castrates, mutilates, burns, and demolishes this style of parenting in the USA.
I strongly believe so-called ‘parenting skills’ are largely irrelevant to how kids turns out.
Example: there’s a dreadful, drug & alcohol-fuelled family on our road & their son went to Iraq as a private security contractor. He earns a fortune out there- whenever he comes home he always has a sweet new ride & hot 19YO model girlfriend.
In contrast, two close friends of mine were wonderful parents & their daughter ended up being raped a knifepoint, then getting depressed & committing suicide.
@quocdarock Really? Where do you get your statistics? It's also why Western children in general are unspectacular at everything they do. I'm a mixed Asian individual and my mother raised me in much the same way. As I got older, she loosened the reigns bit by bit, but I am nothing but grateful. As a result, I'm smart, I'm talented and exceptional at almost everything I do. What do the White children I know have to show for the way their lazy parents raised them? Nothing. You just couldn't hack it
@MrFatPigeons Search "American asians suicide rate" at google.
Ever hear of the "political horse shoe"? One side is communism and the other side is fascism. In the middle are where the conditions aren't radical and perfect. Same with parenting. I wish I was raised in conditions both caring yet regulated. Amy is just so prejudicial against "westerners" as well. Makes the entire asian race look like elitist people.
Regardless I still love my parents (Them not their actions).
@quartercherries I get to call my own race/heritage elitist because I have lived it myself and have observed so much more similar styles of parenting in my Vietnamese-American community and other Asian-American (like Chinese, Korean, Filipino, etc.) communities for my anthropology class. I should have have made my statement more clear.I'm not only calling her elitist, but that style of parenting elitist. Comparing children as if they were cars to see who performs better or worse is so common.
my asian parents high expectations ruined my grades. when i didn't get decimals in 6th grade they yelled at me instead of helping me or encouraging me. i lost faith in myself and stopped trying in mathematics.
i finally got my grades up in high school after i joined the wrestling team and a kung fu class. all that time away from my parents let me think for myself. and i'm now going on to study cultural anthropology because fuck math and i want to make a documentary on asian parenting one day.
She appears to be rather unstable and desperately and bitterly crying out loud for attention and justification for a not to fulfilled life. This is not representation of a model Chinese mother. Even in Confucianism, foundations of successful person, family, community and nation are much more than just academic. It was the Japanese, then Koreans, who adapted and blended lots of postive Western and Eastern values and advancements, which put them into the first class.
the only reason her daughter got into yale and harvard is because SHE'S A LEGACY, people... her stupid "tiger-mom" theory DOESN'T WORK! it really doesn't. i'm an asian-american 15-year old and i KNOW first-hand. quit with the bullshit, amy!
@letsbefriendz WOW you should look at it from fifty before you before you comment at fifteen. In your defense I knew everything at fifteen, my parents knew nothing but their bourgeois edicts, it's amazing how much they got wiser as I got older..
Her notion of 'superior' people is bordering on fascism. Trying to create a 'perfect' child is just plain wrong. And its not just an eastern phonomenon. In the US for instance there are obsessive parents who want their son to be the best baseball player or their daughter to be the best cheerleader. And it goes way beyond mere encouragement... they even go to the extent of threatening opponents parents. Im not 'soft'... some level of strictness is important. The issue here should be balance.
@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 "The issue here should be balance." Can you tell everyone exactly what the correct balance is and how you have divined it? I believe your statements derive from an emotional, 'knee jerk' response and reveal a lack of empathy -- something like: 'I'd hate to be raised by such a strict mother. I never had to live like that, so how could HER children possibly be happy?'
By the way, as a Westerner you may be interested to know that Amy Chua is an American, from Illinois.
The problem with this sort of severe 'parenting'is that it effectively treats children as slaves. Sure, there has to be some degree of control, but Amy Chua's approach is just inhumane. Her daughters probably defend the method because they have been so brainwashed by it for so long. The other issue I have with people like her is they create xenophobic divisions between east and west. As a westerner, I find her attitude arrogant and insulting. There are creative, talented people EVERYWHERE
She comes across as a hypocrite to me. She promotes her views about the 'superiority' of eastern culture (which also strikes me as somewhat racist) but has gained her alumni from a western university.
Where she gained her alumni has nothing to do with how she was raised, are you thick? And why is it racist to point out differences two different cultures raises their kids, the western way of up bringing is different to eastern way of up bringing, its a fact, is not racist, would she be a racist if she said the western way of up bringing is better? you are stupid, seriuosly.
@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 If there's women who defend their abusive men who gives them black eyes, why not someone who gives you less rights than a Gitmo prisoner? I can't imagine why you would for someone who calls you garbage if you're not perfection.
I think the word you're looking for is ethnocentrism, the belief that your culture/people is superior. It's just that historically ethnocentrism is often tied with racism during the colonial era when other peoples' way of life were seen as backwards.
@FortitudeOfHeaven With my mom it was "GD lazy drones" and everything was "Oh look another half-assed job".
I was trained to the the tune of the belt. but I learned respect, politeness, and at 6' 3 275LBS I learned not to let the skills I learned in Japan as a kid and on the wrestling mat get me thrown in jail for assault, because I also inherited a bad temper from my Bear-shirt (pronounced Berserk) wearing ancestors.
Isn't it hypocritical for Amy Chua to be SO traditional in strict Asian-cultural values but she herself is married to a white man?
I think Stockholm Syndrome needs to be reevaluated and expanded. Who would defend someone who prevented them from growing socially by depriving them of sleepovers, play dates, and freedom to pursue their own passions and live life?
These children of Tiger Moms seem to either be strangely well adjusted, or are angry bitter social inepts with a blank future.
My girl just wants to smoke and sit on the couch and watch re-runs of "Full House". I wish Amy Chua would come over and just throw her out.. slap some sense in her.
@mel9ino How exactly do you know that they aren't happy? What makes you happy may be completely different from what makes her daughters happy. And her daughters are cowards? Have you even read the book? Both of her daughters are exceptional musicians who have received accolades from high ranking musicians. If I received praise from a famous pianist I'd be pretty damn happy. Besides, even her daughters commented on their blogs that the whole book is meant to be taken as a JOKE and satirical.
Bitches like her think that they are perfect, that's why they administer the kind of upbringing system on their offspring which they themselves are brought up from, thinking that their children will grow up to be an academically intelligent person like themselves. Just because they themselves succumb to the kind of harsh and inhumane treatment doesn't mean that it'll work on their children. In the bitch's case, she's lucky that her children are cowards too. That's why it works.
i read the first half of her book and so far, i'm only disgusted. she is the most disrepectful, selfish, manipulative, outrageous mother EVER. she's so fucking proud to be asain but kisses the asses of "white" culture, she treats her kids as if they're her trophies, she had dreams for her dumb dog. all this western vs chinese shit she's whoring up is pathetic. her type of mothering is just proven to be some desperate broad who can't live with the thought of a happy child.
The reason to being strict is to earn more glory and money. While most don't understand that rich and famous will forever never come from straight worker.
It's not that privatization sucks... it was the inherent racism in Mexico??? She may look Asian... but she is white to the bone! The Telmex deal is what made Carlos Slim the richest man in the world. And Mexicans pay some of the highest phone rates in the world.
From everyone in Mexico.... Vete a la verga pinche gringa puta!!!
Amy Chua is a freakin' BOSS. Her pattern interpretation of minority market dominance within democracy with a poorer majority population is really interesting and I didn't realize that the ethnic patterns throughout history. Perceptive and thoughtful way to transcend conventional economics in SE Asia with over-night democratization.
@Sivels did you read the entire book? if you did, and you still dont understand it...well O_o thats your problem. its not a parenting book you know? if you took it seriously your really retarded =_= what idiot would? xD right? LOL
@LilAngelNana No, I did not. This woman is a monster. Why am I retarded if I took her book seriously? You don't think she is? Bully and submit a child to humiliation and degradation will cause that child to flourish? Are you kiddding me? This woman is a sadomasochist.
@Sivels so your telling me there are idiots out there stupid enough to believe in what she wrote and do as was described in the book? Am I right? Rational people normally wouldnt be retarded enough to do so. Of course, there are those outliers, the other ends on the bell curve. I will say one thing though, a parents job is to prepare their children for the world outside the home. If they do not, their children will suffer and you know it.
@Sivels My parents are asian, but typical americans. If it werent for my friends and teachers, I wouldnt be where I am today. (Pre med! <3) They taught me what she taught her children. I learned how to take criticism (though, all criticism must be constructive! her book was exaggerated, you know this) I learned to push my limits (my friends are in Yale, Cornell, Coumbia, MIT, you have no idea the hell i went through in highschool competing against these prodigies! though I love them dearly)
@Sivels she did push her children yes, but remember Lulu fought back (And I have done this too. People often say I have no respect for my parents. I do, sort of. They were lenient, let me do whatever I wanted, didnt care about school, they were workaholics so they were never around, my siblings raised me and my twin. my Twin has no idea where she is heading in life. College is difficult for her, but Im sailing through calm seas. This was nothing like highschool, because my teachers PUSHED me)
@Sivels My teachers told me numerous times, try again, again AGAIN. they stayed with me until I succeeded even though they didnt need to, because they would be paid even if they didnt teach! (such is the system of america) But I may not be like other people, because I wanted to succeed. I saw my friends who excelled at all they did and it seemed so effortless to them! I was jealous, I wanted to be like that, I couldnt compare to that, so I pushed myself, with my friends and teachers guiding me
@Sivels You dont need to bully or submit a child for them to flourish. Teach a child that they can accomplish anything. That they can accomplish what so many think is impossible. You need to teach them that it isnt about whether they CAN or CANT. its about whether they DO or DONT! It took me TWO years to learn this, two frigging years to find my stride. If my parents cared enough maybe I would have been more prepared!
@Sivels Now I see my sister struggling, and I remember how I did in highschool. So I will always ALWAYS be grateful for my teachers. Sure I cried, I will not lie to you I cried alot those two years, depressed I couldnt achieve what so many students were easily able to. If my friends were here they would console me and tell me its because they put me in the advanced classes, but I felt like a RETARD compared to my classmates. (funny, my friends were above advanced, they were in honors >_>)
@LilAngelNana My most basic point is that children or young teens should not be bullied into to success, they should be incentivized and encouraged because it's in their own self-interest, not because it makes their parents look good.
@Sivels a parents job is not to make themselves look good, its to prepare their child. Amy Chau doesnt need recognition, shes achieved more than most people.
@Sivels the funny part is, is that I learned to respect my parents more after my time in higshchool. They worked hard to support me and my siblings, though their parenting skills need work. I cant blame them though, since they are immigrants and they are successful so I wont complain. I still wish they put as much effort as Chau had though, because the mental (and ultimately physical) stress I went though was exhausting. In the book, I was horrified reading it, but I got the message.
@LilAngelNana Listen, children don't respond well to terryfying authority and the fear of severe emotional abuse and disapproval of they do not accomplish task A... Children respond to incentives, yes, fear is an incentive but they'll grow terrified of authority and terrified of being a productive individual thinking independently, in other words slaves for the ruling classes... Like I said, if you want a child to flourish, give him/her incentives to do so.. i.e. rewards.
@Sivels incentives? sure that would work if you want your child to OBEY for a short term. If you learned about this in psychology then you also should have learned this too, that you are also teaching them that they are working just for the incentive like "money" or "praise". It's insulting, your treating them as if they were dogs. Your teaching them "oh if you do this ill give you this" or "if you do this it will please me". your're treating them as if they are below you.
@LilAngelNana I don't want them to "obey", parenting is not about breeding slaves... I want them to combine reward and pleasure with learning... Amy Chua's method is to combine learning with fear and humiliation/degradation... It seems to me that you're trying to rewrite what this woman thinks.
"treating them like dogs"? No, absolutely not, I'm talking about this in the context of learning and teaching your child. THat's what we're discussing.
@Sivels yes that is exactly what were discussing, were talking about rewards and incentives now. I dont agree with the book literally, I agree with the message. and that would be to encourage them, and push them, show them that they can do things they didnt think they possibly could.(in the book she included rewards and punishments like what you think parents should do apparently, and thats what I dont agree with) the basic concept of rewards and punishments is to have them obey you. smple
@LilAngelNana "the basic concept of rewards and punishments is to have them obey you. smple" um no, just because you say so does not make it true, you silly thing, all humans do is to have some sort of reward, emotional or material, why is that so hard to understand?
@Sivels the fear of displeasing a parent would be a punishment (which is a part of the idea you were discussing) what im saying is, dont give a child a new sports car for getting into Harvard, Dont tell them "good girl" or something ridiculous like that. Tell them that they did their best and they succeeded. They did it on their own, with only the encouragement of a parent. no rewards are needed. They in turn will feel acknowledged and proud, of themselves not because they did it for mom & dad.
@LilAngelNana I never talked about sports cars for getting into harvard, I'm talking about small things, the idea is to make a child value learning and achievement... We're talking about very young children here, when children get older obviously it's different... and I'm not saying rewards have to be material.
@Sivels pfft, are you kidding. you never mentioned small rewards (some people think a car is a basic reward. my parents think so apparently. clearly they are out of their minds) and you never mentioned younger children and you never mentioned VALUING LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENT. no I did, your rephrasing what I said in my posts against your argument. How wonderful, another basic idea in psychology. mimic another person and you will more likely gain their liking.
@LilAngelNana oh my god.... you're unbelievable... ok, well, what was my original argument then, according to you? It's seems you're the one mimicking me, because everything I'm saying is the opposite of what this monster woman is advocating. Face it you're too butthurt to admit that what she's saying is ****.
@Sivels so Listen when I say this, it is much better for a child NOT to be given rewards or incentives (in some cases yes of course, but if you want them to 'flourish' that is NOT a good idea) rewards do not teach social responsibility. rewards are only for controlling the child, INSTEAD, teach them that responsibility will pay off.for THEM and NOT YOU (parent). They want to FEEL ACCOMPLISHED, to be SUCCESSFUL, they want to ACHIEVE. Rewards are nothing and should only be used as needed.
@LilAngelNana ewards "do not teach social responsibility. rewards are only for controlling the child" Why do children need to be controlled? As I said before parenting is not about breeding slaves, anyone who advocates that is evil.
"they want to ACHIEVE." But why do they want to achieve if there's nor reward? If they get nothing for their effort, for what they've worked for? No reward? That's slavery, that's a recipe for laziness, the only incentive u want thm to have is fear of punishment.
@Sivels are you stupid? THE REWARD IS THE TASK IT SELF, IT IS THEIR ACHIEVEMENT AND IT IS THEIRS ALONE. What is wrong with you? Its like an idiot is going into medical school for the sake of their parents or for the sake of the money involved! Who the HELL wants to see a doctor who doesnt care about the patients?! THAT IS RIDICULOUS AND THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE PROMOTING. The recipe you speak of is about pleasing others and for extrinsic and materialist rewards. Not for the intrinsic ones. .
@LilAngelNana No, the reward is the product of the task... When I go to the gym, the reward is not moving my arms back and forth, the reward is bigger muscles.
@Sivels rewards and punishments arent effective enough on those in their pre teens+ (they are needed at a younger age when they need to be under control. if you dont, then you can expect a very negative outcome in the future) What you need to do is simply encourage them to show them what they are capable of. They want to achieve because THEY WANT TO . there is no extrinsic reward, it is an INTRINSIC ONE. it is NOT slavery, because they are doing it FOR THEMSELVES, that is recipe FOR SUCCESS.
@LilAngelNana "they are needed at a younger age when they need to be under control. if you dont, then you can expect a very negative outcome in the future" that's epic fail on your part... The overruling of preferences, especially of young children is one of the things that is causing most wrongs in the world today.. and you're contradicting yourself, you say children want to succed and achieve on their own, but yet they need to be shouted down from a moral standpoint or whatever.
@Sivels are you kidding? So you will tell a child who is of a few months old "you cannot do this because blah blah blah" Using LOGIC here with a child who has yet to develop? pfft okay! be my guest, go right ahead and when that child turns 10 they will feel superior and order YOU around. >=) LOL funny how life works no? Using logic with someone who cannot understand you will not result positively, dont believe me? Go see someone who specializes in the field and ask them! xD hilarious!
@LilAngelNana trust me, most children are smarter than most "adults". No, I don't need to use logic with toddlers, when did I say that? CHildren when they are young don't need need logic or, you just need to give them material or something they can use to stimulate their mind, young childrens' brains are like sponges and when they get bigger you can teach that the sun and moon are not the same size even though they look like that on the sky, lol.
@Sivels and funny thing is, logic doesnt work until around their pre teens (didnt I point this out? preteens+) so even if you talk to a 2 year old who has developed language skills, they wont understand where your trying to get if you say something like "no you cant do X right now, because im doing Y right now. go do Z instead" You think they are going to understand you? they will understand that they arent getting what they WANTED but they dont know what the point is. This is when rewards work
Amy Chua's methods are not TYPICAL of all Chinese.
However, her APPROACH AND MINDSET are typical of hgh quality, genuine pure Chinese (not American Chinese, Aussie Chinese etc)....focusing on obedience, no "screwing around", respect for elders, excelling academically, etc.
But of course, this is TOTALLY opposite of the American style.
I'm not sure if you guys are hating on Asians, but they are the most successful right now, like Shanghai topped every academic achievement in reading, and mathematics. And when we're in 3rd and 4th grade learning our time tables and division, in China they are zooming through algebra. Just insult her, until you see her children succeeding in life. Have you seen homeless people on the streets that are Asian? I'm only standing up for her because it seem unreasonable for you guys to insult her.
@llHyRaXll This is why American kids are failing. Watch when you actually grow up and realize that those things are IMPORTANT, you're probably already in some Macdonald as a janitor. You know why Am Chua is being strict on her kids? Because she don't want them to turn our people like you.
@llHyRaXll ....you dont care about math and reading? do you have any idea how lucky you are that you KNOW how to read and write? do you? Education is power. it will give you access to things you wouldnt have if you were uneducated. You have no idea how much people want to learn. Besides, one of the points she was trying to make in her book was that if you work hard, you can achieve whatever you want to achieve. I stand by that. It wasnt about "how to parent". Anyone who thinks it is is a fool.
@AnniexRinnegan your an idiot.. it is reasonable for us to insult her.... she is against sleep overs becuase the kids will go on the computer instead of "socializing" this women has issues and so do you for agreeing with them.. grow up you loser and yes i have seen many homless begger asians in my lifetime
@llHyRaXll Well I will not insult you first off, for I actually respect your commentary. But in America it's rare to actually see homeless Asians. But will you disagree with me about Shanghai topping every academic scores? And we should look at our own country (I'm not Asian if your wondering) instead of insulting her, because look - U.S. isn't even in the top five of any academic achievement. This is how bad our present students are. We should find a way to deal with it instead of debating this.
@AnniexRinnegan i wont disagree with you ab out shanghai topping every academic scores if that is really the case..but being at the top really is not that significant... you dont need good grades to be a good or inteliigent person..most of the stuff we do in shcool is a waste of time anyways...and just cuz this kid has higher grades than this kid really doenst mean shit
@llHyRaXll It just meant that their education is better than us-way better than us.Because of their students working hard through school days AND through summer. We,on the other hand, have holidays break throughout the year.Their kids barely have time to sit down and play on the computer because of the amount of homework they have. And its not just "this kid has higher grades than this kid" its the WHOLE nation outsmarting us in everything. You can't disagreed that our future is less brighter.
@AnniexRinnegan ok they have no holiday good for them.. im willing to have worse grades if i can keep my holidays...for us its not all about becoming rich or being the best.. we arnt greedy people like u guys
@llHyRaXll By the way, when you said " we arnt greedy people like u guys " what do you mean " u guys " ? I'm an American like yourself, unfortunately. But I am just more insightful about the other continent, unlike you. Your past "commentary argument" are the example of an American teenager. Great to be an Exemplary! Not. From families friends, who are Chinese, have more MANNERS than most you kids these days. Such failure.
@llHyRaXll The facts are that Western culture is seriously lacking in acedemic skills compared to other more competitive countries Asia,India, etc where the population is 10x larger then Western nations and competition for top honors or even a normal education is limited at best. I'm not entirely agreeing that what Amy did was the best options for raising children but in countries where the social structure is so extreme with few rich privilaged people and many poor people can you blame her?
@mikelching i dont care if people in china got better academics than over here in usa....grades in shcool do not mean that much...what matters is understanding the world and knowing how it works so you can get a comfortable life in it...you dont need all A's or need to be an expert on shakspeare to do that
@llHyRaXll Grades doesn't matter? Um excuse me, you depend on grades to get to the colleges or university that you want. You need them for you future, and you can not just get a comfortable life in it. In China, they want good grades to be the BEST in life, not comfortable in it. And grades in school DOES mean that much. Nobodies cares if you have great insight of the world, they only care what you CAN do in it.
@AnniexRinnegan you dont need all A plus to get into a good school you moron... and we are finbe being comfortable in life.. we dont need to be the "best or richest".. we are not greedy people who need a high class BMW to feel good about ourselves... you greedy chink
@llHyRaXll Have I everrr said anything about money and being rich? No. Look at yourself, barely explaining any detail but opinions and insult like " you moron... " This is an example why Americans can NOT have a good argument. Look at yourself, did I ever mention being high class? No. Lol you jump to assumption stating that I'm greedy . Am I greedy? Do you even know me? Did I EVER mention anything you stated about me? Get your "facts" straight. Advice: in an argument you do not use insult :|
@AnniexRinnegan yes you are a moron and no you do not need very good grades to get into a good university or make a good living . so its ok if chinese people do better in school, it does not make them smarter or more intelligent it just means they try harder. you moron..anyone who is against sleep overs deserves to be hung
@llHyRaXll You're very BAD at argument specially rebuttal, as if you what that meant. If they have better grades than us, then YES they are smarter than us. And you're arguing for a sleep over? Really? I thought we're debating whether or not America education is lacking, or how the Chinese are so more well educated than Americans ( like yourself who can't make rebuttals or anything useful ). Did you know you're very stupid? You never answer any of my question. :\
@AnniexRinnegan i wasnt raisedi n amy chuas style and i did fine in shcool and have a better job than her kids ever will!!! sucks to be a jealous over worked chink like yourself, and end up with a not so good paying job .. u are pathetic. like amy chua.. you are greedy!!! you are the scum of the earth.. amy chau will burn in hell. i hope she does. fuckin chink deserves it.. DICTATOR BITCH
@llHyRaXll Congratulations, you're some person who displays superiority through racial insults, misspelled words, and capital letters. I'm really glad that you've taken the time to examine the complex social and filial context for her parenting methods, for taking the time to understand what her motivation truly is, and for taking the time to truly enlighten the rest of the world through your Youtube comments. People like you truly give me faith in the world. You can even tell tell the future!
@lchiang22 amy chau is against sleep overs because she says the kids will go online instead of socialize with each other...no further evidence is needed to conclude that this bitch is an IDIOT, and so are you for defending her
@llHyRaXll You know you're very bad at rebuttals? How you're just insulting away without giving much points across to yourself? And yes, you do need good grades to get into good school like Harvard and Yale. I don't know how old you are to be experiencing real life application for colleges and university, but I do know you have NO IDEA what it takes to get into one. Do you even know how they select people? Answer that question if you can ._.
@AnniexRinnegan fuck harvard and yale.. kids will be well off just attending a university in california sucj as CSU long beach, CSU san jose, UC davis... they dont need yale...
@llHyRaXll Chinese Tiger mom's are not against having social interaction however they are against wasting time when you could be bettering yourself, where I agree there are poor and homeless people of all nationalities the numbers show that those have made the move to better themselves and move to a Western country have excelled where those born there have lacked ... simply because it's socially accepted to push one's children for a better future... no one wants their children not to succeed.
@mikelching having a sleep over and going on the internet is not wasting time. its called enjoying yourself and spending time with people you like.. tiger mom is a punk
The Chinese in China and around the world are intelligent and excel academically.
That's a simple fact.
HOWEVER....most Americans will themselves NOT to believe this fact.
Many Americans have BLIND PRIDE, living in a state of denial, and will themselves to think that Americans are superior in everything. These are the ignorant ones who have never lived in Asian countries bcos US is always BEST.
@llHyRaXll oh cool.... nice attitude., down-to-earth & humble!! Does ur teacher grade you in terms of Humility? oh well, doesn't matter, u dont study anyway!
@AnniexRinnegan I'm studying at a European university with mainly Asian students and I have to say they're no better and their English is often (understandably!) quite poor. The Chinese international students in particular also seem to lack their own initiative and struggle with research projects where they have to develop their own proposals.
Very good observations, those Asian students not only in Europe but in also anywhere else are mostly just regurgitation experts and linguistically they are pretty hopeless as well.
@SeventhSun That's not what I meant. My formulation was too harsh and a generalisation. I just don't see evidence that they're "better" than European students in any way. From what I see, they often struggle with the English language more, which is understandable as Chinese is so different from English (as opposed to French or German). So maybe that's why, in my impression, they don't take the initiative a lot in classes.
@SeventhSun My Chinese flatmates, who are all doing an MSc/MA and therefore at least their second university degree, have also never had to come up with their own dissertation topic and find this extremely difficult. I was a bit surprised by this. No undergraduate dissertations? They also express the view that they should be allocated topics and told what to do. This limited experience of living/interacting with other students is the only basis for my opinion.
Children should be allowed to lead and run their own lives. You can only give them some pieces of serious advice every now and then, but if they don't want to listen, then let them do what they want to do and learn from the mistakes of their decisions. Experience from the world and not the cane shapes them.
And if you are really just 17 you should shut your hole up. There are Asians who don't agree with Asian parents like her too, so this is not racism.
@AnniexRinnegan I dont know much about her so i can't comment and how bad she is is not affecting me lol. As Asian as well, I just feel pool for her children. Asian moms are tough and demanding but she is the most ever lol. If her children 'succeed' in the so-called sufface things she want them to get in, but they can't enjoy lives, they can't succeed in happiness.
@mylinho they are both actually happy children, with her relaxing her stance on the rebellious second child. they stuck with her when she was criticized, with her eldest writing in to the media. and i'm no grammar nazi, but for someone who's criticizing parenting you have really bad spelling (or are drunk)
@xInterlude Sorry. In my comment, i used the word IF. But in your comment, you talked like everything you said were the truth. No. The kids are happy or not, for god's sake, only they know. How can you know they are happy children. English is not my native language, and I'm not 'grammar nazi''; however, I can spot that your comment was not written in proper English LOL Reading your comment gave me headache *peace*
she is against Sleep Overs because instead of "socializing" the kids will just go on the internet.. what type of bullshit justification is that?? this women has issues....the world would be better off if people like her would just drop dead

China's mindset is like that of an overcompensating child
takadi 5 months ago
China only leads due to the sheer size of their nation. The educational style she espouses as "superior" leads to a nation of sheep, high discipline robots that can make quick calculations devoid of critical thinking or innovation. This is why Americans and the west will always be one step ahead and China is reduced to reverse engineering and imitating every aspect of western culture in order to maintain their wealth. They depend us, and they will always remain inferior despite nowadays fears

SuperTruth77 6 months ago

quocdarock 7 months ago
@quocdarock Really? Where do you get your statistics? It's also why Western children in general are unspectacular at everything they do. I'm a mixed Asian individual and my mother raised me in much the same way. As I got older, she loosened the reigns bit by bit, but I am nothing but grateful. As a result, I'm smart, I'm talented and exceptional at almost everything I do. What do the White children I know have to show for the way their lazy parents raised them? Nothing. You just couldn't hack it
MrFatPigeons 6 months ago
@MrFatPigeons Search "American asians suicide rate" at google.
Ever hear of the "political horse shoe"? One side is communism and the other side is fascism. In the middle are where the conditions aren't radical and perfect. Same with parenting. I wish I was raised in conditions both caring yet regulated. Amy is just so prejudicial against "westerners" as well. Makes the entire asian race look like elitist people.
Regardless I still love my parents (Them not their actions).

quartercherries 5 months ago

WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 9 months ago
@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 "The issue here should be balance." Can you tell everyone exactly what the correct balance is and how you have divined it? I believe your statements derive from an emotional, 'knee jerk' response and reveal a lack of empathy -- something like: 'I'd hate to be raised by such a strict mother. I never had to live like that, so how could HER children possibly be happy?'
By the way, as a Westerner you may be interested to know that Amy Chua is an American, from Illinois.
imcustomized 7 months ago
The problem with this sort of severe 'parenting'is that it effectively treats children as slaves. Sure, there has to be some degree of control, but Amy Chua's approach is just inhumane. Her daughters probably defend the method because they have been so brainwashed by it for so long. The other issue I have with people like her is they create xenophobic divisions between east and west. As a westerner, I find her attitude arrogant and insulting. There are creative, talented people EVERYWHERE
WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 9 months ago
She comes across as a hypocrite to me. She promotes her views about the 'superiority' of eastern culture (which also strikes me as somewhat racist) but has gained her alumni from a western university.
WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 9 months ago
@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1
Myslot2 9 months ago
@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 If there's women who defend their abusive men who gives them black eyes, why not someone who gives you less rights than a Gitmo prisoner? I can't imagine why you would for someone who calls you garbage if you're not perfection.
I think the word you're looking for is ethnocentrism, the belief that your culture/people is superior. It's just that historically ethnocentrism is often tied with racism during the colonial era when other peoples' way of life were seen as backwards.

LilAngelNana 10 months ago
@LilAngelNana No, I did not. This woman is a monster. Why am I retarded if I took her book seriously? You don't think she is? Bully and submit a child to humiliation and degradation will cause that child to flourish? Are you kiddding me? This woman is a sadomasochist.
Sivels 10 months ago
@Sivels so your telling me there are idiots out there stupid enough to believe in what she wrote and do as was described in the book? Am I right? Rational people normally wouldnt be retarded enough to do so. Of course, there are those outliers, the other ends on the bell curve. I will say one thing though, a parents job is to prepare their children for the world outside the home. If they do not, their children will suffer and you know it.
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@Sivels My parents are asian, but typical americans. If it werent for my friends and teachers, I wouldnt be where I am today. (Pre med! <3) They taught me what she taught her children. I learned how to take criticism (though, all criticism must be constructive! her book was exaggerated, you know this) I learned to push my limits (my friends are in Yale, Cornell, Coumbia, MIT, you have no idea the hell i went through in highschool competing against these prodigies! though I love them dearly)
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@Sivels she did push her children yes, but remember Lulu fought back (And I have done this too. People often say I have no respect for my parents. I do, sort of. They were lenient, let me do whatever I wanted, didnt care about school, they were workaholics so they were never around, my siblings raised me and my twin. my Twin has no idea where she is heading in life. College is difficult for her, but Im sailing through calm seas. This was nothing like highschool, because my teachers PUSHED me)
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@Sivels My teachers told me numerous times, try again, again AGAIN. they stayed with me until I succeeded even though they didnt need to, because they would be paid even if they didnt teach! (such is the system of america) But I may not be like other people, because I wanted to succeed. I saw my friends who excelled at all they did and it seemed so effortless to them! I was jealous, I wanted to be like that, I couldnt compare to that, so I pushed myself, with my friends and teachers guiding me
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@Sivels You dont need to bully or submit a child for them to flourish. Teach a child that they can accomplish anything. That they can accomplish what so many think is impossible. You need to teach them that it isnt about whether they CAN or CANT. its about whether they DO or DONT! It took me TWO years to learn this, two frigging years to find my stride. If my parents cared enough maybe I would have been more prepared!
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@Sivels Now I see my sister struggling, and I remember how I did in highschool. So I will always ALWAYS be grateful for my teachers. Sure I cried, I will not lie to you I cried alot those two years, depressed I couldnt achieve what so many students were easily able to. If my friends were here they would console me and tell me its because they put me in the advanced classes, but I felt like a RETARD compared to my classmates. (funny, my friends were above advanced, they were in honors >_>)
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@LilAngelNana My most basic point is that children or young teens should not be bullied into to success, they should be incentivized and encouraged because it's in their own self-interest, not because it makes their parents look good.
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels a parents job is not to make themselves look good, its to prepare their child. Amy Chau doesnt need recognition, shes achieved more than most people.
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@Sivels the funny part is, is that I learned to respect my parents more after my time in higshchool. They worked hard to support me and my siblings, though their parenting skills need work. I cant blame them though, since they are immigrants and they are successful so I wont complain. I still wish they put as much effort as Chau had though, because the mental (and ultimately physical) stress I went though was exhausting. In the book, I was horrified reading it, but I got the message.
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@LilAngelNana Listen, children don't respond well to terryfying authority and the fear of severe emotional abuse and disapproval of they do not accomplish task A... Children respond to incentives, yes, fear is an incentive but they'll grow terrified of authority and terrified of being a productive individual thinking independently, in other words slaves for the ruling classes... Like I said, if you want a child to flourish, give him/her incentives to do so.. i.e. rewards.
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels rewards for specific challenging tasks..
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels incentives? sure that would work if you want your child to OBEY for a short term. If you learned about this in psychology then you also should have learned this too, that you are also teaching them that they are working just for the incentive like "money" or "praise". It's insulting, your treating them as if they were dogs. Your teaching them "oh if you do this ill give you this" or "if you do this it will please me". your're treating them as if they are below you.
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@LilAngelNana I don't want them to "obey", parenting is not about breeding slaves... I want them to combine reward and pleasure with learning... Amy Chua's method is to combine learning with fear and humiliation/degradation... It seems to me that you're trying to rewrite what this woman thinks.
"treating them like dogs"? No, absolutely not, I'm talking about this in the context of learning and teaching your child. THat's what we're discussing.
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels yes that is exactly what were discussing, were talking about rewards and incentives now. I dont agree with the book literally, I agree with the message. and that would be to encourage them, and push them, show them that they can do things they didnt think they possibly could.(in the book she included rewards and punishments like what you think parents should do apparently, and thats what I dont agree with) the basic concept of rewards and punishments is to have them obey you. smple
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@LilAngelNana "the basic concept of rewards and punishments is to have them obey you. smple" um no, just because you say so does not make it true, you silly thing, all humans do is to have some sort of reward, emotional or material, why is that so hard to understand?
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels the fear of displeasing a parent would be a punishment (which is a part of the idea you were discussing) what im saying is, dont give a child a new sports car for getting into Harvard, Dont tell them "good girl" or something ridiculous like that. Tell them that they did their best and they succeeded. They did it on their own, with only the encouragement of a parent. no rewards are needed. They in turn will feel acknowledged and proud, of themselves not because they did it for mom & dad.
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@LilAngelNana I never talked about sports cars for getting into harvard, I'm talking about small things, the idea is to make a child value learning and achievement... We're talking about very young children here, when children get older obviously it's different... and I'm not saying rewards have to be material.
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels pfft, are you kidding. you never mentioned small rewards (some people think a car is a basic reward. my parents think so apparently. clearly they are out of their minds) and you never mentioned younger children and you never mentioned VALUING LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENT. no I did, your rephrasing what I said in my posts against your argument. How wonderful, another basic idea in psychology. mimic another person and you will more likely gain their liking.
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@LilAngelNana oh my god.... you're unbelievable... ok, well, what was my original argument then, according to you? It's seems you're the one mimicking me, because everything I'm saying is the opposite of what this monster woman is advocating. Face it you're too butthurt to admit that what she's saying is ****.
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels so Listen when I say this, it is much better for a child NOT to be given rewards or incentives (in some cases yes of course, but if you want them to 'flourish' that is NOT a good idea) rewards do not teach social responsibility. rewards are only for controlling the child, INSTEAD, teach them that responsibility will pay off.for THEM and NOT YOU (parent). They want to FEEL ACCOMPLISHED, to be SUCCESSFUL, they want to ACHIEVE. Rewards are nothing and should only be used as needed.
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@LilAngelNana ewards "do not teach social responsibility. rewards are only for controlling the child" Why do children need to be controlled? As I said before parenting is not about breeding slaves, anyone who advocates that is evil.
"they want to ACHIEVE." But why do they want to achieve if there's nor reward? If they get nothing for their effort, for what they've worked for? No reward? That's slavery, that's a recipe for laziness, the only incentive u want thm to have is fear of punishment.
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels If I'm putting words in your mouth, I apologize..
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels are you stupid? THE REWARD IS THE TASK IT SELF, IT IS THEIR ACHIEVEMENT AND IT IS THEIRS ALONE. What is wrong with you? Its like an idiot is going into medical school for the sake of their parents or for the sake of the money involved! Who the HELL wants to see a doctor who doesnt care about the patients?! THAT IS RIDICULOUS AND THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE PROMOTING. The recipe you speak of is about pleasing others and for extrinsic and materialist rewards. Not for the intrinsic ones. .
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@LilAngelNana No, the reward is the product of the task... When I go to the gym, the reward is not moving my arms back and forth, the reward is bigger muscles.
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels rewards and punishments arent effective enough on those in their pre teens+ (they are needed at a younger age when they need to be under control. if you dont, then you can expect a very negative outcome in the future) What you need to do is simply encourage them to show them what they are capable of. They want to achieve because THEY WANT TO . there is no extrinsic reward, it is an INTRINSIC ONE. it is NOT slavery, because they are doing it FOR THEMSELVES, that is recipe FOR SUCCESS.
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@LilAngelNana "they are needed at a younger age when they need to be under control. if you dont, then you can expect a very negative outcome in the future" that's epic fail on your part... The overruling of preferences, especially of young children is one of the things that is causing most wrongs in the world today.. and you're contradicting yourself, you say children want to succed and achieve on their own, but yet they need to be shouted down from a moral standpoint or whatever.
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels are you kidding? So you will tell a child who is of a few months old "you cannot do this because blah blah blah" Using LOGIC here with a child who has yet to develop? pfft okay! be my guest, go right ahead and when that child turns 10 they will feel superior and order YOU around. >=) LOL funny how life works no? Using logic with someone who cannot understand you will not result positively, dont believe me? Go see someone who specializes in the field and ask them! xD hilarious!
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@LilAngelNana trust me, most children are smarter than most "adults". No, I don't need to use logic with toddlers, when did I say that? CHildren when they are young don't need need logic or, you just need to give them material or something they can use to stimulate their mind, young childrens' brains are like sponges and when they get bigger you can teach that the sun and moon are not the same size even though they look like that on the sky, lol.
Sivels 9 months ago
@Sivels and first of all, why the heck would you shout at a newborn? To get their attention? They have no clue what you are saying dude.
LilAngelNana 9 months ago
@LilAngelNana newborns understand approval and disapproval, if you shout at newborns you'll confuse them and can possibly destroy their minds.
Sivels 9 months ago

@AnniexRinnegan who gives a fuck about math and reading??? not me ..there is way more important stuff to learn about

hahahaaa......more important stuff to be learnt.???
What are those stuff?.....joining the silly US army and getting killed for nothing???...or selling drugs???
or joing gangs????
Any person who says "who gives a fuck about reading".....certainly comes from a low-class, low-quality family.
Your useless father was a classic example.
But I'm not sure which father.
hahahahaaa!!!!
USisfuckedup 10 months ago 2
@llHyRaXll This is why American kids are failing. Watch when you actually grow up and realize that those things are IMPORTANT, you're probably already in some Macdonald as a janitor. You know why Am Chua is being strict on her kids? Because she don't want them to turn our people like you.
AnniexRinnegan 10 months ago
@llHyRaXll ....you dont care about math and reading? do you have any idea how lucky you are that you KNOW how to read and write? do you? Education is power. it will give you access to things you wouldnt have if you were uneducated. You have no idea how much people want to learn. Besides, one of the points she was trying to make in her book was that if you work hard, you can achieve whatever you want to achieve. I stand by that. It wasnt about "how to parent". Anyone who thinks it is is a fool.
LilAngelNana 10 months ago
@AnniexRinnegan your an idiot.. it is reasonable for us to insult her.... she is against sleep overs becuase the kids will go on the computer instead of "socializing" this women has issues and so do you for agreeing with them.. grow up you loser and yes i have seen many homless begger asians in my lifetime
llHyRaXll 10 months ago
@llHyRaXll Well I will not insult you first off, for I actually respect your commentary. But in America it's rare to actually see homeless Asians. But will you disagree with me about Shanghai topping every academic scores? And we should look at our own country (I'm not Asian if your wondering) instead of insulting her, because look - U.S. isn't even in the top five of any academic achievement. This is how bad our present students are. We should find a way to deal with it instead of debating this.
AnniexRinnegan 10 months ago
@AnniexRinnegan i wont disagree with you ab out shanghai topping every academic scores if that is really the case..but being at the top really is not that significant... you dont need good grades to be a good or inteliigent person..most of the stuff we do in shcool is a waste of time anyways...and just cuz this kid has higher grades than this kid really doenst mean shit
llHyRaXll 10 months ago
@llHyRaXll It just meant that their education is better than us-way better than us.Because of their students working hard through school days AND through summer. We,on the other hand, have holidays break throughout the year.Their kids barely have time to sit down and play on the computer because of the amount of homework they have. And its not just "this kid has higher grades than this kid" its the WHOLE nation outsmarting us in everything. You can't disagreed that our future is less brighter.
AnniexRinnegan 10 months ago
@AnniexRinnegan ok they have no holiday good for them.. im willing to have worse grades if i can keep my holidays...for us its not all about becoming rich or being the best.. we arnt greedy people like u guys
llHyRaXll 10 months ago
@llHyRaXll By the way, when you said " we arnt greedy people like u guys " what do you mean " u guys " ? I'm an American like yourself, unfortunately. But I am just more insightful about the other continent, unlike you. Your past "commentary argument" are the example of an American teenager. Great to be an Exemplary! Not. From families friends, who are Chinese, have more MANNERS than most you kids these days. Such failure.

@AnniexRinnegan you gauys as in the people who think like you. dumb fuck
llHyRaXll 10 months ago
@AnniexRinnegan btw i agree our education system is fucked up, we shoud make it to where we learn more useful stuff
llHyRaXll 10 months ago
@llHyRaXll The facts are that Western culture is seriously lacking in acedemic skills compared to other more competitive countries Asia,India, etc where the population is 10x larger then Western nations and competition for top honors or even a normal education is limited at best. I'm not entirely agreeing that what Amy did was the best options for raising children but in countries where the social structure is so extreme with few rich privilaged people and many poor people can you blame her?
mikelching 10 months ago
@mikelching i dont care if people in china got better academics than over here in usa....grades in shcool do not mean that much...what matters is understanding the world and knowing how it works so you can get a comfortable life in it...you dont need all A's or need to be an expert on shakspeare to do that
llHyRaXll 10 months ago
@llHyRaXll Grades doesn't matter? Um excuse me, you depend on grades to get to the colleges or university that you want. You need them for you future, and you can not just get a comfortable life in it. In China, they want good grades to be the BEST in life, not comfortable in it. And grades in school DOES mean that much. Nobodies cares if you have great insight of the world, they only care what you CAN do in it.
AnniexRinnegan 10 months ago

AnniexRinnegan 10 months ago
@AnniexRinnegan yes you are a moron and no you do not need very good grades to get into a good university or make a good living . so its ok if chinese people do better in school, it does not make them smarter or more intelligent it just means they try harder. you moron..anyone who is against sleep overs deserves to be hung
llHyRaXll 10 months ago

@llHyRaXll Chinese Tiger mom's are not against having social interaction however they are against wasting time when you could be bettering yourself, where I agree there are poor and homeless people of all nationalities the numbers show that those have made the move to better themselves and move to a Western country have excelled where those born there have lacked ... simply because it's socially accepted to push one's children for a better future... no one wants their children not to succeed.
mikelching 10 months ago
@mikelching having a sleep over and going on the internet is not wasting time. its called enjoying yourself and spending time with people you like.. tiger mom is a punk

@AnniexRinnegan
You are correct.
So, they know ZERO...but talk like experts.

@AnniexRinnegan I'm studying at a European university with mainly Asian students and I have to say they're no better and their English is often (understandably!) quite poor. The Chinese international students in particular also seem to lack their own initiative and struggle with research projects where they have to develop their own proposals.
Chocolateluvr1987 9 months ago
@Chocolateluvr1987
Very good observations, those Asian students not only in Europe but in also anywhere else are mostly just regurgitation experts and linguistically they are pretty hopeless as well.
SeventhSun 9 months ago
@SeventhSun That's not what I meant. My formulation was too harsh and a generalisation. I just don't see evidence that they're "better" than European students in any way. From what I see, they often struggle with the English language more, which is understandable as Chinese is so different from English (as opposed to French or German). So maybe that's why, in my impression, they don't take the initiative a lot in classes.
Chocolateluvr1987 9 months ago
@SeventhSun My Chinese flatmates, who are all doing an MSc/MA and therefore at least their second university degree, have also never had to come up with their own dissertation topic and find this extremely difficult. I was a bit surprised by this. No undergraduate dissertations? They also express the view that they should be allocated topics and told what to do. This limited experience of living/interacting with other students is the only basis for my opinion.
Chocolateluvr1987 9 months ago
@AnniexRinnegan
SeventhSun 9 months ago 2
@AnniexRinnegan I dont know much about her so i can't comment and how bad she is is not affecting me lol. As Asian as well, I just feel pool for her children. Asian moms are tough and demanding but she is the most ever lol. If her children 'succeed' in the so-called sufface things she want them to get in, but they can't enjoy lives, they can't succeed in happiness.

@mylinho they are both actually happy children, with her relaxing her stance on the rebellious second child. they stuck with her when she was criticized, with her eldest writing in to the media. and i'm no grammar nazi, but for someone who's criticizing parenting you have really bad spelling (or are drunk)
xInterlude 3 weeks ago
@xInterlude Sorry. In my comment, i used the word IF. But in your comment, you talked like everything you said were the truth. No. The kids are happy or not, for god's sake, only they know. How can you know they are happy children. English is not my native language, and I'm not 'grammar nazi''; however, I can spot that your comment was not written in proper English LOL Reading your comment gave me headache *peace*
