As long as a plane has enough airspeed to keep from stalling the ground speed dosen't matter. this is how some planes ground speed can have much higher ground speed if they are going with the wind. if they are goinig into the wind, and the wind is high then this happens
@tigerswede3 & @demopilot208 and if there was no wings the plane wouldn't be flying at al... RELAX you are the one sayin not to get technical... Enjoy the damn video
Get a big enough wind and you can (theoretically) do that in any plane... I'd hate to experience the wind that could give a 747 that slow of a ground speed! LOL!!!
Saw one of these at waddington airshow last year, they were built to have a very low stall speed because there intended use was for aerial photography

That seems very unlikely...if the plane is moving this slow it shouldn't stay airborn even if there is strong wind. It could be possible to fly backwards maybe, but you'd still have to be moving faster. No?
@emtneto Also, if the wind was constant, and over VS speed (stall speed for the aircraft), the aircraft would actually be traveling backwards, yet still maintain enough lift to stay airborne.
You know - it's practically impossible to crash the AN2 - it has a stall speed of something like 35mph or less ... in a stall it just floats down like a kite ....
Ha ha, my flying instructor has said about that. He used to fly C152's sometimes. Apparently; in a strong head wind they would fly backwards no problem lol
Haha we do this all the time...If the conditions are right you can fly backwards. I think the slowest I've gotten was a 18 knot groundspeed. At 4000 it looks like you're barely moving. Not difficult at all.
VERY dangerous! If that plane fully stalled due to the gusty wind conditions, I doubt he would have enough altitude to fully recover without hitting the ground first. I wouldn't perform slow flight in gusty wind at 100' agl - not very smart!!!!
This happened to me when i was doing slow flight...i actually ended up going backwards...neat stuff...never actually seen footage like this. good stuff
In my cessna 172 ive been able to fly backwards before by turning into the wind and putting the plane into slow flight. Of cource I was up almost 8000 feet.
If it turns 180 degrees, it would break the sound barrier :b

Once I had an RC plane which was able to travel forward without and reverse with full flaps in 3-4 Bft. Was kinda funny...

I can imagine him rocking back and forth in the cockpit like a kid on a tricycle stuck in mud to try to get it to go.

damn, if the wind just drops so does he.

what do you think IAS was? maybe 55 knots?

is that fake??? wouldn't it fall out of the sky if it didn't have speed?

@jjd705 it has plenty of airspeed. just very little groundspeed

omg- its almost as slow as a j-3 cub lol!!!

I did this once in an ASK-13 glider, GPS said groundspeed was about 3.4m/s :p, that was at 60 km/h (It stalls at a speed around 55 km/h)

I've done that before in a 172. Practicing slowflight with 40deg flaps in high winds, my GPS said my ground speed was 9 MPH
flyboy2186 2 years ago
nice. ive done slow flights, bur no wher near 9 MPH hahaha

If there is enough wind to produce lift (i.e. wind as fast as the takeoff speed), the plane could not be moving at all and it would remain airborn.

@emtneto I think his term is just figurative speech. No need to get technical here, just enjoy the video.

@emtneto Just above the stall speed should be sufficient
zwitserkoen 1 month ago
Nope, it's called lift. That's what wings are fore. The wind acts as a forward thrust in reverse.

well straight wing aircraft are very stable even at slow speed and that aircraft looks like it has a high aspec ratio so it stall at lows peeds

It is not dangerous if proper airspeed is maintained. The groundspeed is irrelevant.

This An-2 can fly realy slowly. This is not a difficult exercice. But quite beautiful.
One time with my DR315 I managed to fly backward, the wind was very strong this day. Very funny : )

I do this with my model airplane all the time, never seen a real plane do it before. By the way... you cant land hovering like that. Trust me :(
LarsLarsen 5 years ago
you can if you have a stable windspeed!more tan the landing speed! (totally not advisable!)lol! see the comment of airspeed!!
