An impressive 38-10 win over #1 Texas. Wish it could have been the Irish vs. the Tide: after all, as far as similar opponents, Ole Miss beat N.D. 20-13 (while the Tide crammed them 34-13) and the Irish buried USC 49-19 and the Tide beat the Trojans 21-20 in L.A. (while they were ranked #1). I think it would have been a great game....but we deserved a share in 1977 damnit!!!!!
why would it have mattered if they played? Nobody would have beaten the Irish that day! Did you want the Rammer Jammer to get the Trifector for the 70s Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, then a Cotton Bowl loss! Go Irish!
Don't get me wrong. I have the utmost respect for the Notre Dame program and they did wax the #1 team (al-be-it one of the most over-rated #1 teams of the 70's). I base this on the fact that they needed a roughing the QB call to "survive" Arkansas. But they did finish 11-0. My point is this: Bama did what it had to do- demolish Ohio St. in it's bowl game. ND did what it had to do- demolish it's bowl opponent. Why we didn't get a share (as the #2 team in the nation) is beyond me.
I have the utmost respect for Alabama, a very great program with a great tradition, but God loves the Irish, here lies the Bear 323 victories all-time, but he never beat the Irish.
That Montana comeback game against USC was perhaps the most incredible game I'd ever seen. It was spectacular all the way.

Hehe, the hell you say. The '77 Alabama team was on a roll big time. I would have said "bring on the Irish!!!" At that time we OWNED the superdome.

Perhaps the coaches were trying to make up for prematurely voting Alabama No. 1 before they faced the Irish in the Sugar Bowl in the 1973 season.

True, but we did finally "scotch the irish" in '86 28-10.
