How to Spot Dog Pregnancy

Hi i have a chihuahua an i thinks she's pregnant because earlier this moth she throw up and now her stomach is rounder plus she's now lazyy....

My maltese/Chihuahua is showin signs of pregnancy.Her teats are larger and her stomach is rounder than normal. Earlier in the year, she threw up but at the time I thought nothing of it.Now I'm a little concerned. Ive estimated that if she is indeed pregnant the pups will be due in late feb or early march.

@MusikNLyfe Sounds like she's pregnant, you can always check with your vet to be sure and get some sort of date on the birth. It's about 63 days from conception, do you remember her last heat and if she spent time with male dogs?

not sure if my pom is pregnant if she is she would be five weeks she is showing all the signs and when you stand her on her legs u can see she does have a lil round belly just not as big as i would think at 5 weeks is it possible she is having just one pup she is about 4 lbs normally shes about 41/2 or more now

@samatharae1 I'm assuming you saw a successful tie? Sounds right for 5 weeks and could be muliple pups in there. Start getting prepared now and good luck over the next 4 weeks.

@ChristyMarieBabe Hi, whether she's pregnant or not she has been in the pregnancy stage for the last two months. The hormones released during this time have have led to the conditions you witness now and it's possible she could be having a false pregnancy. 63 days is the usual pregnancy length and as birth approaches usually she becomes quieter, less playful and stops eating 24hrs before birth.

Let me know what else you nottice and try calculating the days to the last heat?

my dog is acting weird now,shes makeing a nest out of blankets and wont let us get near.i think shes like nesting or something.she never had a boy dog partner or anything.i think she thinks shes haveing puppies.but why would she start this now?does any one know why my dog would think shes got puppies????there never was a boy dog in her life...

@runescapedaisey254 Hi, could be several things, she's having a phantom pregnancy, she's coming into heat and nest building (quite common) or maybe you missed the act somehow and she is pregnant?

Would like some more background info, her age, usual sleeping pattern, last heat, general health and any character traits that are unusual... like people, dogs can be excentric too.

@danscott888 shes about 3 years old.she sleeps at 10pm, all night,until we wake up.her last heat was about 2 months ago.her health is good.her unusual character traites is that shes been sleeping a lot lately,in the nest she makes out of blankets.also her nose is a bit dry.and she barley ate.she did get her rabies shots a while ago,about 2 days ago,i guess,may be that can make her like this.she is a house dog,so she couldnt have gotten pregnate.theres the info,can u tell me whats wronge?

@runescapedaisey254 Difficult one to pick, reaction to shots can throw a dog off balance, confuse and cause unusual behavior.

I always start from scratch and look at 3 things. 1.Diet 2.Immunization and 3.Socialization (how a dog is brought up).

For me diet is priority number one as 9 out of 10 ailments in dogs are diet based.

@Nicolette0101 Hi, yes it's imp. to be ready and have someone there who's been through it b4 if you can or at least speak to your vet and have phone No. on hand for emergency. Get a whelping box 2 weeks prior, newspapers (lots) to line floor every day, towels, sheets, thermometer to check rectum temp 1 week prior onwards. Normal temp is 100.5 to 102.5, 24 hrs b4 whelping temp drops a few degrees-gives you time to prepare.

Keep box warm 80/85 degrees. Be on hand at birth. Read up on this. Dan.

Would a bitches ribs get wider (like carrying puppies high up) in a phantom pregnancy? Or would they just get large in the abdomen?

My girls boobs are yet to drop, her bottom too are a little more saggy than usual, but with only approxiamtely 12 days to go, should there be change in the abdomen. A breeder tells me that a dogs stomach may not drop until a week to go, is this true? Thank you :)

@tobybelchy It's true she may not drop till late and pregnancies can vary in outward appearance among dogs with regards ribs especially in a mix breed. So no scans for pup numbers then? Patience and work with her... only 12 days to go!

My lab x weimaraner girl was bred 7 weeks and 3 days ago. It was a planned breeding, but unfortunately we only managed to get a slip mating from her. She acted strange from the very day she mated. Ever since she has became more loving and very shadow like, folowing everybody everywhere, lying in places she wouldnt usually. She has lost a bit of hair around her bottom two sets of nipples, and her ribs have got noticably wider, but i see no noticable change in her belly ... (will continue)

@lonelyboy323 Hi, The sure way is to take her into the vet for a hormone test, the hormone is called Relaxin. The pregnancy will last approximately 63 days. What you should really do for her is give a nutritious diet to aid her pregnancy which comes down to feeding natural raw food. Then she's getting all the good stuff for her body and the growing puppies without the additives&fillers in commercial dog food. @lonelyboy323 you cant tell straight away of she is pregnant you will have to wait 4weeks when her boobs come down and get fat, that is a good sign and she may go off her food a bit too, when you want your dog to have puppies you need to feed her up on tuna and protein but she doesnt want to be fat just needs all the goodness for the puppies and you will need alot of newspaper too for the floor and a whelping box, depending on the size of your dog it needs to be a fair but larger

@aspecialsonia Hi, looks like a successful mating to me. Is this her first and how old is she? Watch the changes over the next few weeks and then you visit your vet to check for hormone levels to be sure, if you want to. Let me know how you get on.

@kannybananny Hi, Your Boston would not be ready to mate generally before at least 6 months, so unless she did actually get out of sight, say with a neighbors dog then it seems unlikely she's pregnant. To check for sure you can visit your vet to test her hormone levels for 'relaxin'-present when pregnant. Let me know how you get on-good luck.

Hi, My dog Cindy mated on March 3, it's been 12 days since then and Ive noticed some changes in her shes been eating more and sleep a hell of a lot and her tummy is a bit bigger and not flabby but firm she also keeps liking her private area ever single minute what is she licking up is it blood or is it clear discharge ? and also she got blood on one of my white shirts if shes still bleeding does this mean shes faking it ?

Hi, sorry i'm late replying, i'm on holiday. The clear discharge usually comes after the 'blood spotting' as the heat finishes it's course. Difficult to tell from what you have told me, if she is pregnant, ghost pregnant or finishing her heat. Checking her hormone levels with your vet will clarify things. Let me know how you get on.

Hi, yes it's possible as you previously found out. Although generally as you travel along the 63 day pregnancy timeline your dogs abdomen swells with maturing pups. Overweight dogs or a very small litter can mean a pregnancy is un-suspected.

Hi there, you do have some of the signs but at this stage it's too early to tell. Leave it a week or two before going to the vet where they can check for the hormone Relaxin to confirn a pregnancy. Let me know what the outcome is.

Yes, the female can get pregnant by two different dogs at the same time! This can result in a "split litter", meaning part of the litter is from one male, the other part is from the second male! Where do you get your information danscott??

They can get pregnant by two different dogs, you can end up with a litter sired by two fathers.

How strange would that be, imagine having a dalmation breed with a dalmation and with for example a labrador. Some would come out full pedigree and the others as crossbred.

Although these pups wont be born separately, they will all be born at once, should that be 10 day over due for one set or 10 days premature for one, depending on when the dog consumated with the dogs. :)

Were the 10-17 days over the heat cycle, especially the latter stages of the cycle.

The stomach swelling is certainly an indication but to check for sure you could visit your vet for a hormone test. Good luck, let me know how you get on.
