if you put a pressure plate  on both sides of the door they open and close for you. Much easier and quicker.(don't do it on the main door or monsters will get in.

@rompcom456 im too in beta 1.5_01 but you need stone not cobblestone you can make stone with a fornuce and fornuce u make with some cobblestones and middle is left with nothing.
