The thump keg serves as a filter for the alcohol,it improves/purifies it.Think of a water bong,the smoke gets through but most of the impurities are filtered out,enhancing any product to be smoked.The water in a bong doesn't have to be heated in order for the smoke to pass through it.Smoke is a higher temperature than vapor,which is whats coming off the still,not smoke.Water would lower the proof of the alcohol,hence back ends :end of a run of shine, wouldn't lower the proof.Another explanation.

steam from fist barell goes into thump and the heat from the steam heats up the backings witch makes it steam from tump goes in worm then turs into liquid after getting chilled from cold water in worm barell

1) what is the function of the stump keg? I understand the construction and flow of steam but not why it is important unless it is some kind of simple reflux chamber. could some one explain it a bit?

2) why do the bakkins need to be used instead of clean water or plain moon shine? I get that it is a mix of alcohol and water, and probably keeps more water and lets alcohol pass at the gas/liquid interface. but could some one explain?

@demnlordd666 1) To double distill the alcohol while removing more and more impurities. It uses the steam from the pot and pushes through the back ends, evaporating more alcohol along the way and distilling at a higher proof, (2)thus the reason you don't use water in a thump keg. Wouldn't do any good.

@WildlifeSeriaLKiller ok so it is a reflux chamber kinda. the alcohol steam mix hits the colder back ends in the thump keg, but only the alcohol is mobile enough to stay in vapor form while the water steam looses too much energy and gets stuck, then you are passing more alcohol to the worm. ok so when you are done with the run, are the back ends the last out the worm or the stuff left in the thump keg that still has alcohol?

the thump keg is is a barrel that holds the backins and this 'iil double the proof of the steam. this steam moves up into the smaller thump rod that will move to the worm and condense.

Hey WSK. Thanks for posting this video. Sure is interesting watching how the ole timers did this. A friend suggested I watch "The Last One", a movie about Popcorn. Have you seen it? I have not, but I think it uses some of the footage from this film. Anyway, thanks again.
