ID card or not we're still fucked, they're going to be putting the FINGERPRINTS into the passports and in certain highschools like my little bro's they're introducing fingerprints instead of using dinner cards to be used when paying for food and i'm guessing they'll be keeping a record with those prints aswell which the government'll most likely get ahold of seeing how the council are pushing it.
The funny thing is in germany you do have ID cards, Personalausweiss, and by law you have to have it on you at all times, You can get taken back to the station so that the police can verify your identity. I still havnt heard of anyone getting arrested for not carrying one, and I live there. You have to be involved in an accident or crime as either a witness or suspect before they want to check your details. Its the most normal thing in Germany, why is Britain making such a fuss?

ID card or not we're still fucked, they're going to be putting the FINGERPRINTS into the passports and in certain highschools like my little bro's they're introducing fingerprints instead of using dinner cards to be used when paying for food and i'm guessing they'll be keeping a record with those prints aswell which the government'll most likely get ahold of seeing how the council are pushing it.

The funny thing is in germany you do have ID cards, Personalausweiss, and by law you have to have it on you at all times, You can get taken back to the station so that the police can verify your identity. I still havnt heard of anyone getting arrested for not carrying one, and I live there. You have to be involved in an accident or crime as either a witness or suspect before they want to check your details. Its the most normal thing in Germany, why is Britain making such a fuss?

I'm a German living in London for many years and I agree....why on earth is it such a big deal with the IDs here??
People are very quick here to mention lack of privacy -but the ID is not being stuck to your forehead! :)

surely it's he idea that any governmental agent, police officer etc. can access very private and unique information on a person whenever they want.
This power could easily be abused - it is a fairly fascist idea, with the people of the country feeling that they are under threat of permanent, immidiate personal scrutiny at any time.

How is this idea fascist?? Theyre designed to aid police work, make your life easier, place tighter controls on immigration and can be used to do so much good, Yes the information can be abused, but not more than that which we publish on facebook, on the census, drivers licence, at our place of employment, the DVLA. The info is already on the passport database which is available EU wide.... Should we get rid of those databases? The parties should offer choice to voters.

To me it's not about offending the Germans at all (haven't heard a word about it in the press here so far) but about misleading the British into believing that all countries where people have ID cards are totalitarian states, and adding the 'worrying' German element, in case that hasn't already frightened people enough.
I'm not a political person, but I'm shocked at how many people still harbour such stupid prejudices, and at a respected politician for adding fuel to the fire.
