I ve seen to this video more than ten times and I m trying hard but I cannot understand his passages. They just don't fit for me. I d realy love to understand it. Is there any way somebody could try to explain it to me?
Sonny Rollins is a force from which emits raw musical power. Such is the strength that i can feel his presence from here in Australia. See you in june Sonny babe <3
@UprightBryce He's one of the most amazing jazz musicians ever. If you don't like how this one is, go to tenor madness. That's what you'd probably like then.
@TheWoogie2 I know Rollins' work really well- I've transcribed tons of his solos, from Tenor Madness, as well as off the whole way out west album. But, you can't say this is good. He's all over the place and is not playing ANYTHING tasteful.
@brycepeake Sorry myfirend ,I hate to burst your bubble.No,you don't know as much as you thought...This is dynamic improvising on his own terms..BTW please get a copy of the song..and listen to his rendition agin ,then you decide. Don't mess with Sonny's work ok..Peace and blessings to ya !!!

thanks for putting up this vid....this song is one of my fave sonny songs. that playing the low B-flat for the melody during the last portion of the song was amazing....thanks for helping to keep this music alive
I heard him play half the 2009 top 40 larded with 60 years of jazz history and after everyone thought he was completely lost double back and return to the song he was playing...:D
He is ...well... SONNY ROLLINS, there's no other name or word for him.
Young Skywalker, listen you should to Our Man in Jazz and East Broadway Rundown. In the middle 1960s was Rollins working out the implications of Ayler and Coltrane: with Don Cherry, Billy Higgins, and Henry Grimes was he playing. But alas, there followed a disturbance in the Force...
Right! Brilliant analysis! If that is all it is, let's see you do it!! Ever played a sax or any instrument. YOu think he is just mindlessly moving his fingers and blowing air uncontrolably? Obviously you know zilch about jazz, and are probably tone deaf to boot. Go do some listening to a good cross-section of jazz from the 30s to the 70's for about 10 years and you might learn something.
What do you think, you automatically drop dead when you hit 70? Ageist!! Lots of musicians play into their 80's as long as their health is good and they don't have arthritis to keep them from moving their fingers. I saw Lionel Hampton when he was 79 & he kicked ass on vibes better than guys 1/3 his age. He played actively until 1991 when he had a stroke so he played until 84. Vladimir Horowitz was still playing up to his death at 86. As far as I know Johnny Griffin is still playing and he's 80.
@silverblue004 how?

2 years ago, I saw this video and thought
"what the heck... why is playing all random notes?"
ever since I've "felt" that urge to play like that with a backtrack,
NOW I understand what that truly is. BEAUTIFUL.
