Finish it with 320 sand paper then you wet it with water. Let it dry then 320 again and then apply your stain. The best way to do this is to dip the cloth in the stain..wetting the whole cloth.Apply liberaly then you use a brush to straighten it out. when you apply the stain do not touch it just hang it up to dry or get a heat gun to dry it. Then you can apply an oil or lacquer.

btw all 10/22 wood stocks are walnut unless specified just to let you know
