yea, i know. i don't have cheesecake and poppy seed anymore. they are probably passed away by now but i gave them to a family with children. the wife had pet rats when she was younger. i just bought two young females and a male. they are my pets but i am breeding them because i also raise a few snakes. i know it sucks but snakes are pets to, and they need to eat : (
You act just like my dad in every single way, you look like him and act like him, move like him and everything. You even play with your rats the same way my dad played with mine. You are an exact clone of him !!
Don't feed rats cheese!!! They are lactose-intollerant!!!! At the long end they'll get belly problems, which will cauze a sure and painfull death for those lovely and sweet animals.
Very cute video! I understand about the camera thing. Most rats I've had, especially girls, freeze up or hide when the camera turns on. Yea, Poppy Seed did her climbing trick!
im not sure if you actually are feeding them cheese but its bad for them, they are lactose intollerant. Can kill them pretty easy, Why they used to use them in mouse traps so that if they did get the prize and escape they died anyways. Otherwise cute rats and good so see they help you relax as much as they do me.
Are Cheesecake & Poppy Seed still living? I know they only live a few years. One of my daughter's rats has had 2 tumors removed already and he is just a yaear old now.
i love rats but my parents don't lol! i am probably gonna get one in a few months.....i wanna make a big ass cage for it. BTW you have very cute rats =P
when i get one i wanna Pure Black one and i will name him Zontar the barbarian or Zontar the great lol or something kick ass like that..... i will even make him a little viking helmet with horns =P
Nice to see a grown man love his Rat kids so much. I do the same as you and I kiss my Rat daughter none stop. It is very easy to see how much you adore your little angels.Your little sweeties know how much you care for them. They are lucky to have you as a Rat Daddy. All the best to you and your little angels. Brenda & Coda(my Rat daughter)
To answer your question, it depends. If you get a pet rat from a store like petsmart or petco then it is more likely for the pet rodent to be more skiddish and scared so they are more likely to bite you. If you get them from a responsible breeder that hand raised them then they are more likely to be socialized. I have Two hamsters(golden and a russian dwarf)and they dont bite. The golden is the most mellow creature I have EVER met its crazy. I would suggest getting a pet rodent from a breeder!
i got all 4 of my rats from pet stores (there are no breeders in my area), they are very loving and mellow as well..just had some minor respiratory issues (the best reason to get them from a breeder- healthier rats), but otherwise they're gentle and great. i think their temperament largely depends on getting them young, and raising them properly, teaching them that they're safe and loved. rats are awesome!
I don't see anything wrong with taking pets from pet stores.. Even if they are mass bred, you've got to think, "I might be supporting them. But what would happen to the rats if a kind owner like myself doesn't buy them?"
yeah. exactly. i got all 7 of mine from pet shoppes (there are no breeders in my area) and i wouldn't regret it for a second, i love(d) them all very much; at least they got a chance at a good life.
If you get them at three weeks old and raise them and give them lots of love they will rarely bite. I recommend getting a rat as young as you can find, right after they are weaned and that way they will be a lot easier to socialize and handle.
I have only been bitten severely a few times and it was always by a rat that was rescued from a bad situation or that had never been properly socialized. Sometimes a rat will bite if they are scared, but if they are your pet it's usually just a small nip.
awh you're just chillin on the floor with your girls. so precious! i wish i had carpet and i nice area i could do this. i have to take my babies outside into a fenced in enclosure i have made for them:)
i have some questions, i have had my 2 boy ratties for about 3 or 4 months they wont walk into my hands like i see other ratties do, i can pet them and stuff i got them from petsmart and maybe thats why but i dunno i want them to trust me because i love them and they let me pet them i just want them to climb right up on me when i open the cage door like i see other ratties do, if any one can help me please message me i would really like to hear ur opinions =]
my rats didn't at first either. but i just give them treats every time i want them to come out. honestly i think th answer is in food! now that it has been a while it's not like the expect food every time i see them but it helped to get them to trust me. and now i am sitting her typing with one hand because my little girl lucy is sitting sleepily in my other hand grooming and licking me!

Have patience and be gentle. One of my boys was very shy at first. I didn't force him. one pop rat sites says to put a bit of yogurt on your finger and give it to him while you hold him. I taught him to love sitting on my shoulder by placing him there, and immidiately giving him my yougurt coated finger to lick.shortly after he began to just get on my shoulder(all about the snacks) Now he is very affectionate and loves to just be on my shoulder where the action is(no snack required).
I see that you are an animal lover, do you find it hard to feed your snakes when you love rodents? Im a rodent lover, about to get my first rats in two weeks! My boyfriend wants snakes, im not sure if i can handle him feeding it baby rats and mice! how do you do it? any tips?
i am an animal lover and i need to keep my snakes alive. rats are cool and clean and make good pets. mice on the other hand are dirty and stink. i wouldn't keep a mouse for pet because i've never had one come to me when i put it down on the floor. then again, the snakes don't either so i might be a bit of a hypocrit.
For one, never feed a pet snake something still alive. They sell "feeder" rats and mice at pet stores for a reason: they're already dead and preserved. I don't know why so many people are under the impression snake food has to be LIVE; the snake is now domesticated, it has no reason to "hunt" for its food. Besides, it saves the ones being eaten a lot of pain and suffering. It makes me sad to think so many people buy fancy rats to feed to snakes instead of ones already bred to be eaten.
How cute! I love to lay down and let them run on me too! I have a few pet rat videos on my page. Come check them out! I now have 6 rats. 4 hairles girls and 2 furry boys.
i'm pretty sure i will get two more but i am going to wait untill i move out of this little apartment. i always tell people what a great pet a rat is. they are very clean and so freindly. i really do miss them. thank you for your comments elizabeth
what precious little girls. you look like such a proud rat daddy. if they are still with you, try cat toys to catch their attention. i had the most shy little girl who ran at every sound, until i got my first feather toy on a stick... she quickly became quite the little hunter of those feathers.
Cheesecake & Poppyseed are really cool! I loved seeing Poppyseed climb up your arm. Rats are great climbers and a great pet to have. Right now I have 3 girls. I've had a total of 15 in the past 3 1/2 years. I had 8 at one time. Check out my video Rat Wearing hat (eating yoggie). Unfortunately, GG had to be pts a couple months ago since she had a large mammary tumor & wasn't lovin life much. It's cool to see other people like them as much as me. :) Julie
It looks like you have two wonderful little mates. They are both gorgeous, they both look jolly rats. I love the names Poppy seed and Cheescake. Rats are the most wonderful little munchkins. We started out with 1 and over the last seven years the rat pack has grown to 12.
mine were girls. i don't know what i would recommend. i would do some research on the web. actually i bought cheesecake on a whim (the white one) and my friend gave me poppy seed. he gave me a girl because i had a girl.
hey i was just wondering ifyour rats live in a cage or if they just roam the house and if they roam the house was it hard to train them not to run away etc?
rats use a litter box like a cat. mice on the other hand would be pooping in the video. if you notice the box in the background, the black spots are their poop.
oh. i havent trained my rats to poop in a litter box. but im working on it. i would definately reccomend rats more than mice... because mice stink! and plus, rats are more playful.
i didn't train mine either, i think it just comes natural. read something on the internet about what to use. they don't recomend using scented litters. i had a box of fish tank gravel on the floor for my box turtle and thats where the rats went to do their thing.
Oh right... now I get it. I use ummmmm recycled newspaper kitty litter. 100% dust free! Its pretty good stuff, and it absorbes all the smell of the wee! :)
if they drop few raisens on the floor just pick them up and put them in the litter and show the rats, they'll figure it out. i had a little bowl in the cage also that they used.
I dont have a camera that has sound but im going to get it working soon and then my ratties will be on You Tube. by the way... Poppy Seed and Cheesecake are such cute names! my rats are only 7 weeks old and their names are Pip and Milly. :)
i took them with me on a 9 hour trip to my parents house. they weren't fairing to well and i had a lot more traveling to do so i gave them to a really nice family that wanted them. i can't wait to see pip and milly crawling all over you.
Aww. A while back I had an pet albino rat named Socrates (given to me and named by a friend). He lived for a year or two until I had to have him put down because he developed a tumor that grew to the size of a golf ball.

tell me HONOSTLY, do pet rats bits as frequently as hamsters do because hamsters do a lot and it hurts like FUCK!
Im thinkin about buying a rat thats y i ask.

No they don't bite. Hamsters bite because the are aggressive solitary creatures. Rats crave attion fromtheir owners. You shold get 2 rats.
