I had the same sadness as you, my Crystal has a corrupted save file allthough I didnt do anything to it, except completed it and not playing on it over a year :(
this has happened on most of my friends gold/silver cart rides but not on my, I think it has something whit it being a copy. But I have a friend who has a friend that on his science lesson got to fix old cart rides, mostly old pokemon gold/silver, but iy would be easiest to just buy a new one I think.
I'd already beaten the Elite Four and leveled up a Feraligatr to 100, so the replay value vanished, but the file corruption looked like it gave me a chance to do a playthrough of Pokemon Gold.
Well, at least I still have my overkill file on FF2.
your battery went flat most likely, this is because gold and silver used older batteries, so they had to keep the save and the time. Crystal doesnt have this problem as it used a better quality battery, and the older games only need to hold the save.
No, I had my save file for a long time. Even though I didn't play it much, I managed to get in 100 to 110 hours of gameplay, which involved leveling (and evolving) a starter Totodile into a level 100 Feraligatr.

can i fix that though? do you know if i have to buy a GBC or a new GBA or something?

I'm not sure. You might be able to buy a new battery for the game, though. (Not the gameboy, the game)

I had the same problem on my gold version. There was probably some bad ones sent out and we happened to get them.
