My cat does this when she sees something that she cannot get. A fly lands on the wall and he quickly and quietly makes 'ya, ya, yack' sound. Quite silly really, it's not like the fly will actually go towards him but he still speaks to it.

Cats do that when they see something they can't reach. If my cat sees a fly or a bird and it can't reach, she starts to make that yack noise

lol my cat used to do that, but only when he was a kitten. He'd make that sound when we put a tape measure above his head. never figured out why
