  • heroin

  • @thefreeworldofmusic: No, my question was about Freddie Redd, the pianist, who is alive and well. I'm well aware that Jackie has gone on to the great jam session beyond.

  • Good old Jackie - but he ought to pull out his mouthpiece a bit.

  • great stuff

  • wow...freakin' holy shit thanks.

  • called : who killed cock robin

  • This really brings it all home.... my old man was a jazz cat... paris .... 8 year old ... Kinda brought up on it... but BANG it brought it all back... R.I.P. KRH ! Yeah got the vinyl somewhere stil :-)))) Thanx for the post!! (this I.T. crap is good for some things lol!)

    "The Connection"(Blue Note BST-84027)s

    (Recorded:Hackensack-NJ/Febr.15,1960)

  • Great music...And I love the 60's feel of the video!!!

  • Anyone know this tune name?

  • @rpoole444

You can get a recording of the all music from this play from Amazon. It's out as a Bluenote remaster, and its called 'The Music From The Connection' - by The Freddy Redd Quartet.

Buy it - you won't regret it - I promise!

    :-)

  • @rpoole444 Freddie Redd - Who Killed Cock Robin - The connection

  • @rpoole444 it's called "Who Killed Cock Robin". You can find it on Freddie Redd's recording "The Connection".

  • Sounds good - never heard of the Connection but it is good to see Jackie Mclean in action, good to get some hard bop blown straight in your face... thanks for posting!

  • jackie is charlie parker reincarnated, a super inspiraton.

Im tryna figure out is he playing double embouchure ?

i love his stance, all i kept thinking was "shoulders!!!" lol

  • notice at 6:16 when he plays bird's lick from ornithology

  • jacke make me proud to be native american

  • WHO KILLED COCK ROBIN?

  • Only last year did I discover Freddie Redd. He's playing at Birdland soon, part of a comeback after many years off the scene. Hope to see him perform one of these days. Thanks for the post. (RPI Jackie) PS: Got to find this film.

  • Damn! Jackie Mac!!!! He my fav alto player!!

  • that's music indeed

  • man, jackie burns on this.. almost like he could die the next day, like there his last notes

  • This really shows how things were - bassist nodding out at 2.37. All the sugar hill crew were using heroin back then as were many, many other musicians. It must've been hell. What a lovely little phrase at 2.49 though!!

  • Does ANYONE know the name of the last song? I'd love to play it.

  • It's Jim Dunn's Dilema, written by Fred Redd

  • Thanks I'm going to get the cd

  • Anyone know the name of the first tune?

  • i love mc lean one of the best altos in jazz...and this is a very important film, i have it!

  • what is the film about? i´m thinking of getting it but i don´t know..is it much music?

  • it was a movie about a theatrical piece from jack Gelber's "The Connection",acted by the Living Theatre during the 60

There is a good portion of music but it was principally acted

A very intersting experimental movie improvised from the musicians and from the actors

  • thank you! sounds great,I have to get it!

  • I can send you a copy.. in the end this guy comes over and plays some bird stuff on a portable record player

  • this films name is the connection.

    frredie redd on piano.

  • Incredible, absolute bop.

  • This is a scene from the film 'The Connection'.

  • i love jazz but i dig the movie even more---thanks a lot---where can i get a copy of "THE cONNECTION"??---i'm stuck in australia where it is as rare as hen's teeth.

  • wanna trade with something ?

  • what is this song called?

  • "who killed cock robin" by freddie reed

  • Very good!

  • this footage makes me know for sure that we are not all robots in some pre-programmed plan.

Be-Bop is the most beautiful and difficult of the Jazz. Maybe it is not Jazz at all. Maybe someday it'll be classified as a music unto itself.

The funny moments in this footage make my heart do a somersault.

Jackie went on to be one of the greatest teachers ever. He lived the life of ten men.

Sorry to lay it on heavy. I can't help the way I feel.

  • bop was an insatiable monster. A high art. Thank goodness it was never really co-opted. It's still there, but the times are'nt. You had to be able to throw you're self out with the bathwater. I'm thankful I lived in those times. Thanks to bobjazz11 for this footage. Celebrate!

  • Pure jazz!!! Mmmmmmmm mmmmmmm!

  • Oh my.... a youtube highlite so far. Thank you so much.

  • I don't know what to say... 'thank you' seems so inadequate.

  • thanks a lot for this!

  • If anyone would like to contact Freddie Redd, he is alive and well and living in LA.

    Freddie Redd, P. O. Box 125, Hollywood, CA 90028

  • @hipbopper: Does he still perform out west?

  • Amazing clips!
