  • man, no matter how many years go by, this gets me every time! LOVE it. I love that Sarah M is on it, AND that at 3:50-4:00...you can see her getting emotional, because it's SUCH a powerful song!!! LOVEIT forever and ever!!! ~MBB

  • hmm didnt DMC sing this song with sarah because her music saved him when he went through his depression state or somthing like that?

  • this is a beautiful version of a beautiful song. this combo is touching and great!!

  • I love this song soooooooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful message spoken through this song. It would help if you saw the documentary that detail why he made the song. There are many adopted or transplanted youth who might have the same feelings that he is addressing. It was revealed during the documentary that after the song was made Sarah told him she too was adopted.

  • THIS. SONG. FUCKING. SUCKS!

  • @monirhall1 How? .3.

  • I've been looking for this for years...I LOVE THIS REMAKE!!! :'D

  • DMC sucks. Sarah McLachlan saves this otherwise pathetic song.

  • @fadedyouthtube : It's not a pathetic song, his voice may not be the best now but his message is what matters the most. You obviously missed it.

  • As cliche as this sounds, this speaks to me.

  • Respect to DMC

  • I don't especially care for rap, but really, this was an interesting, moving cover of the original song.

  • First Aerosmith and now Guns n roses! Whats next Rammstein?

  • @kerbal666 ...What?

  • @JohnHazl My (obviously crap) joke was pointing out that DMC had remixed rock songs in the past and I thought he might rap along to Rammstein. However unlikly. Ill get my coat.

  • @kerbal666 No, no, leave the coat. I just didn't get the Guns n Roses bit. When did DMC ever do GNR? Mostly asking because that would be fucking awesome.

  • @JohnHazl You know what Ive done? For all these years I thought Cats in the cradle by Ugly kid Joe was GnR!!

Im such a spacko *face plam*

  • @kerbal666 Hahaha, that's what I thought you were saying :P No worries

  • @kerbal666 It's not even by Ugly Kid Joe, though, it's by Harry Chapin.

  • You ever listen to "Cat's in the Cradle" and think, "Man, I wish DMC and Sarah McLachlan would collaborate on a remake of this song!!" The answer is "no," and this is why.

  • Thumbs up if you were sent here by Cracked.com

  • @randonbwhite Cracked is literally the only reason I would ever listen to a collaboration between DMC and Sarah Mclachlan.

  • @randonbwhite sure was lol thumbs up!

  • @randonbwhite fuck yea cracked sent me

  • @randonbwhite I too had an experience where my suicide attempt was halted by a song: John Denver's "I want to live."

  • while I appreciate the message of the song, DMC's flow and lyrics make him sound like some 10 year old who's writing his first rap ever. This song makes me wonder how he ever became a famous rapper. Oh wait, that's right. His band mate was the head of the label's cousin

  • @CMontyBeAwesome He's old school. That's without autotune and samples and his vocabulary covers over 50 words repeated. Listen and enjoy you fucking tool.

  • @cheapassassin thumbs up

  • Sarah and DMC were both adopted thats why they did the song together.

  • @JackNashton69 was it DMC or Jam Master Jay that was adopted?

  • dmc sounds a bit strained but i gotta say this is extremely good

  • Who was that guy who played Warrick Brown from CSI

  • Comment removed

  • this is by farthest the best song done by two talented singers especially Sarah McLachlan

  • I was really moved by his story on the moth. But, I have to admit, this is really bad...

  • sarah is an angel if u think thumbs up

  • DMc was at my school last year and he was telling his story it was really something and I don't think one person left that room without a tear. Great success story.

  • @Ladychaos5star DMC is the reason that many pair of Adidas didn't become felon shoes. That he never stopped reaching out to and working in the community gave a lot of kids hope.

  • I just learned about this song. Check out The Moth podcast on iTunes (from Jan 24th) to hear DMC tell the story of how he and McLachlan came together for this record.

  • its a shame he lost his voice years ago jus because he used to rap wit such intensity which put too much strain on his vocal chords...and he is the reason why alotta rappers have vocal coach's training them how to take care of their vocal chords...even wit what i call a "tone def" voice,he still went hard on this song

  • Thanks to Storycorps for cluing me into this story. How amazing that Daryl and Sarah were able to come together and how everything turned out!

  • everything happens for a reason. :)

  • Damn, now I'm all teary. This is really something.

  • i heard of this guy because of msn lol... music saved from death or bad moments..

  • Thumbs up if MSN.com brought you here

  • DMC credits Sarah McLachlans song 'Angel' for saving him from committing suicide in 1997. He was so moved he went out and bought all her music, stopping his dark thoughts. 3 years later he asked her to sing on his album. She has some amazing music.

  • @bcldj39 get this from MSN.com?

  • @bcldj39 she's wicked...a true goddess

  • @redhaireddog Darryl told a wonderful story on "The Moth" that you might appreciate. It's about how this song came about. Very powerful (remove the space after castroller.)

  • @gene2u a very touching story indeed !!

  • Never heard of sarah mclachlan before, however the only hip hop band I will listen to is DMC, go figure I was looking for mixes and came across this amazingly piece of music. I am sure Harry Chapin is happy his legacy still lives on through these two amazing singers.

  • Harry chapin= god

  • This is my loving sister da's favorite song /

  • i dont like rap but this is an exception.really well done.does original justice.

  • There are 15 retards who won't like this video...

  • my teacher wrote a book of dmc he is dmc's bokk writer and freind

  • this song rocks

  • Even though DMC's voice sounds strained, they're still some sick rhymes.

  • Sarah looks hot in this! (as normal)

  • DMC son looks just like him when he was younger. Big glasses and all.

  • Very interesting mix of two entirely different voices. I like it very much, and it has a very powerful message behind it.

  • oops...meant to say Harry Chapin

  • Just heard the story behind this song on the radio...wow...can't stand rap...but I have to admit I will make an exception for this one...long time Cat Stevens fan...

  • her tits sag

  • with all due respect, listen to the words, not the voice!!!!!!!!

  • i feel sorry that he lost his voice a little

but he still is the best

  • this song is good

didnt know that he still sang

  • Awesome song and message, I adopted my daughter, wife had her from a previous relationship but her natural father was never around. Im the only dad she has ever known and I love her like she was my own. People, if you can adopt, do it.

  • i love this song

  • very very cool

  • Yeah The Cat Stevens chorus is the best part. Glad to hear DMC holding it down.

  • dmc icon of hip hop still holding it down!!!

  • Clarify: The original song "Cats in the Cradle" was written by Harry Chapin. Not ironically, it's also about parenthood - in this case about the impact of a parent's business on a child. "When you coming home dad/I don't know when, but we'll get together then".

  • First, the song was written by the late Harry Chapin, from a poem his wife wrote to him. Both Darryl McDaniels and Sarah McLachlan are adult adoptees. DMC wrote this and recorded with the Chapin family blessing to chronicle his struggle to reconcile this truth hidden from him as a child. This is about both of their emotional realities.

  • wow this song has a meaning behind plus cat stevins chorus killed it

  • That is not Cat stephens

  • Hey, people, calm down! I don't like rap either, and yes, he kept only the chorus of the original song, but it has a feeling and the story isn't just the usual love-money-babes-yo-motherfuckers-yo one. So I like it and it doesn't seem as disrespect to me

  • how about you show some respect moron

  • Great tune, and a great story behind it too. DMC works with the Chapin family and World Hunger Year. And was that Tom Chapin as the Doctor???

  • RJHAMM2 - man that;s exactly the reason i came across this.. im an electronic trance guy.. i dont listen to rap at all.. only the old school stuff that actually made sense!.... this track's beautiful.. the chorus is chilling...!! i just wouldnt picture sarah singing the chorus of a rap song but hey:D.. it's all about different things.. diversity and peace!

  • ok guys.. really? don't offend this song. Find the background information to why he wrote this song. I was never a DMC fan, i don't like rap. But I came across this song, as I am a HUGE Sarah McLachlan Fan. And I prefer Chapin's version of course. But it's the meaning of the song that matters. He only used the chorus. If you hate it THAT much, keep it to yourself.

    =)

  • hahaha i remember the filming of thiss

  • very good video! very emotional song!

  • amazing. absolutely amazing.

  • Very emotional song and video. I've always had a great deal of respect for DMC. Even more so when I found out he too was adopted, like me. Sarah is so beautiful and sings like an angel. Another adoptee.

Cats in the Cradle has always been emotional for me, growing up and watching my dad get older and pass away. and watching my own kids grow up. Overlay this with my own adoption, and this just brings me to tears.

    Thank you DMC and Sarah.

  • please stop talking (it makes absolutely no sense).

  • STFU! Who asked for your opinion!

  • All of you need to show some respect for DMC and realize that he has a vocal disease and show even more respect for Harry Chapin who created this song. Stop being TMZ critics and start appreciating true talents. I am sure everyone who criticized this song loves the twitter song.

  • is that warrik(sp) that was on csi at bout 3:09 give or take

  • I'm pretty sure it is

  • theres lots of bands that plays cats in the cradle

  • voice may sound didderent but he does sound better than some of these commercial rappers out today.

  • Still got respect to Run-DMC

  • i love run dmc, DMC maybe most of all. he was fucking awesome. and as much as i feel good about him coming to terms with being adopted and so on, and as much as i feel for him losing his voice, it just doesnt sound good anymore, and it breaks my heart, honestly, but his voice doesnt sound good anymore. thats just the honest truth.

  • Harry Chapin in 1974:Cats In The Craddle

  • cool song

  • Sarah is an angel, and her voice is proof that God exists.

  • Sarah Mclachlan looks and sounds so beautiful. Keep doin ur thing, DMC, keep doin ur thing.

  • I love this song!

  • DMC still has some damn good talent after all these years and sarah mclachlan is more beautiful than ever

  • great collaboration, theres just one thing thats bugging me about this song, and can somebody clairfy this for me, "cats in the cradle with a silver spoon" isnt that from aerosmiths song from way back in the early maybe mid 70s

  • Harry Chapin - 1974

  • thank u for clarifying that, i was thinking back in the saddle again for some reason

  • I almost cried the night they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when DMC was talking about how his life was better becaus his birth mother gave him up to the parents who raised him and his friendship with Joe Simmons ( Reverend Run ) and Jam Master Jay. It was like this song was released a second time.

  • this is one of the best songs i ever heard,

not just coz of the way it sounds, but because of the message and meaning,

    dmc still has it

    class song

  • what the fuck?

  • he has a speech problem (spasmodic dysphonia) i met him last year hes a really nice guy that why he sounds like that. he went to my school and talked about how he was adopted and why he sounds like that.he also spoke about sarah mclachlan and how he wanted to kill himself but everytime he was gonna do it he heard the song "angel" and he stop himself by the time he would finish listening to the song he changed his mind

  • You all know why he did this song, right? It's because that really happened to him. In behind the scenes for this video, he states that he was very close to committing suicide, and Sarah Mclachlan's song, "Angel" literally saved his life. So he asked her if she would do this video with him, and act as the angel that helped him through the conditions of his birth, and adoption. It goes out to all of those children who are just like him. It's further illustrated when we see his son at the end.

  • In all fairness, DMC lost his voice around 93-94. So his voice sounds REALLY strained, even when he's just speaking.

  • @UdoShan In all fairness, the drummer from Def Leppard's only got one arm!

  • u need help its on there ill help u find ut or send it to u

  • same here T.T

  • I love Sarah, I met her twice and DMC is really cool :)

  • Great song, it shows what positive can come out of hip hop. Messages of hope, created through reinvention of pieces that may have been forgotten through time and reintroduced to a new generation.

I just have to admit however the combination of DMC and Sarah McLachlan doing a duet truly floors me. I never saw it coming, but this is a nice song.

  • anytime i hear this song

i wanna cry, i'm adopted so

it really reaches out to me

and it makes me happy when knowing

that i am adopted and i have a wonderful life.

Sarah's voice is just so beautiful.

  • This video has so much karma. It starts off with DMC taking off his trademark fedora and glasses and becoming Darryl McDaniels, the man and ends with DMC's son putting on the hat and glasses because of his admiration for his dad. Not to mention that Harry Chapin's version was about a father who spent no time with his son and DMC's version is about a son's quest to meet his biological mother without abandoning the love from the parents who raised him. I almost cry every time I see this.

  • It was Sarah McLachlan's music that pulled him out of a depressed funk and inspired him to work with her...

  • Out of suicide depression, look for the "A&E private sessions", it was listening to Angel that got him out of depression. If you look it has other great quality video for any Sarah M. fan!

  • dickhead

  • Wow, not a rap fan, but this kicks ass.

And quite frankly I don't see what's so messed up about his voice either, I've heard way worse.

  • Sarah's a goddess, yo. NEVER disrespect a woman like that. DMC's voice may very well be breaking because this song means a lot to him.

  • I absoloutly love this song so much!!

  • I like it

  • is that the dude from CSI at 3:11?

  • yea it is

  • yup

  • yes

  • @chillphil27 Yeah that is Gary Dourdan aka Warrick Brown from CSI.

  • no no u do not say that about the best music artist ever

  • his voice may not sound good but he will always have more repsect then you -.-

  • wasnt this a country song but jam master jay took it and made a story out of it in rap and rock....i feel sorry for jam master jay only one left in run dmc

  • Huh? Jam Master Jay got killed. DMC and Run are still alive.

  • i though all of them died besides 1 of them

  • opps......fuck im a dumbass...my bad

  • This is a great duet. Both artists are the top of their genre.

I love the Jam Master Jay hat on the mic stand.

  • Sarah looks hot in this video but have you seen her lately? In that ASCPA commercial, she looks like she's aged and gained weight. Whatever. Still a great performance in this song in the most unique of situations.

  • Well you know she had a second child?

And I think she still looks great=)

  • hmm. people get older...and have kids. besides -- she sounds good.

  • he cant sing properly becuase he has a voice disorder called Spasmodic dysphonia.

thats is y his voice is all messed up

and they are horrible duo lol

  • his voice is absolutely terrible! her voice is good. Cat's in the cradle is a good song, this isn't particularly.

  • come on this song is pretty dope. admit it

  • yeah kind of

i liked when it first came out

  • Harry Chapin is rolling over in his grave.

  • Well more than anything is about the message to those who were adopted. when D told Sara that he has just found out he was adopted she told him.. that OK D. because i was adopted too. what a crazy coincident. lol...

  • WOW this song should of never been made....orianal is better...kinda creepy

  • yes! anything with her brand on it is gold.

  • My sister found me after 43 years a few weeks ago. I understand this song and love it!!

  • what happened to DMC voice?

  • DMC drank a lot in his younger years and that really fucked up his voice for a long time and I know when he had his son in 1997 he had to clean his act up and he did. I'm very happy he found his mother too. I know both of those events in his life changed him forever and healed many of his wounds. This is a really great song and don't DMC and Sarah sound wonderful together?

  • He has a spasmodic disorder that makes it difficult for his vocal cords to work properly. If you've ever had a really sore throat/laryngitis, you have an idea of how difficult it is to speak in your familiar voice. His spasmodic disorder produces a very airy sounding voice as he has to push more air past the cords to reach an audible volume.

All said, DMC has taken what some would consider career-ending and ran with it. More power to him! :)

  • these two should show the kids how do a duet. that's right, i'm looking at you sean kingston and natasha bedingfield. could you two have produced a more painful music video?

  • i love DMC with everything and love Run-DMC forever but im sorry, this is just bad. he lot his voice and i know he's emotinal and i feel bad for him and everything, but that doesnt mean that this song is automatically good. im not trying to be mean, it honestly breaks my heart because im a huge fan but he really does not have the voice anymore.

  • no, im just saying, and it really doesnt bother me

  • obviously the chapin family didnt think it was bad or they wouldnt have let them do it.
